The Five Precepts
are not commandments but ways of life thought by the Buddha to
attain True Happiness. This precepts can be done not only by
Buddhist but by anyone. They refect on the moral side of the
EightFold Path and the beginning of achieving Buddhahood.
Basically, it tells
us life is suffering and we should be aware of the suffering and not
being deluded by the material pleasures of life.
First Precept:
Not to Kill,
Protect living beings
This precept
helps us build Compassion and love in ourselves. It ask us to be
aware that every being has a right to live.
Second Precept:
Not to Steal
This precept tells us
not to take what us not ours. It also aims to teach us to be
generous and to share with the less fortunate and also be contented
with what we have.
Third Percept:
Not to Indulge in
senses
This percept tells us
that we should not give in to our senses. It teaches us not to be
overwhelmed by our lust, greed and hatred. This sense pleasures are
but attachments of life which blinds us from achieving True
Happiness.
Fourth Percept:
Not to lie;
To be Truthful, abstain from false speech
This precept tells us
that truth will win all lies. It teaches us that lies are but
temporary delusions and in the end will be discovered. Hence, the
precept tells us that being truthful in all matters is very
important.
Fifth Percept:
Not to take
intoxicants
This precept tells us
to be Mindful at all times and be alert and aware of the suffering
of life. It helps us built a strong mentality and to remain healthy
in order to achieve True Happiness. |
