This is just a short story on how the X-Men split up. It wasn’t edited so it is a bit rough, but it gives one the basic idea.
The Time To Say Good-bye.
By: idnar
Logan walked into the front door of the mansion, his senses were already well aware of the pandemonium inside. He just got back from one of his many trips to the woods. Once he entered the living room he found his teammates. They were all arguing. Scott and Ororo were shouting back and forth, while Jean was trying to get them to quiet down. At the same time, on the other side of the room, Hank was trying to calm down an extremely angry Rogue, who was yelling at Remy. She was about to throw a picture at him when Logan, previously leaning against the doorframe, took a vase that was beside him and threw it to the floor, gaining everyone’s attention.
“Did I miss something?” Hank and Jean stepped forward.
“The professor has left again. He went on some mission.”
“And before he left he told us not to expect him back for some time.” Hank finished for Jean.
“Ah swear, as grateful as ah am for all he has done for mah, he’s getting as bad as Logan for going awall on us.” Rogue said as she placed her hands on her hips.
“Rogue, the professor has a good reason for leaving.”
“Chere,” Remy spoke to Jean, “De prof always has a good reason fer leaving. But what about us? He has t’ understand dat de X-Men has need of him to.”
“As long as we stay a team, we shouldn’t need him,” Ororo said. Beast cleared his throat.
“I have something to say. Moria asked me to come to Muir Island to give her a hand with some experiments. I have accepted her invitation, and will be leaving tomorrow.” He looked around to all of the X-Men’s reaction. Had he had been a telepath he would have sensed their dismay, but all he saw was their supportive faces. ****
They watched Hank leave with sadness in their hearts, for they all sensed that this was the beginning of the break-up of the X-Men. ****
Later in the war room the remaining members gathered.
“It is time to decide our future.” Ororo said, looking at each of her friends carefully. Remy was sitting, on foot over the arm of the chair, playing with a deck of cards; a look of cloudiness was on his face. Logan was sitting comfortable with both feet on the table. Scott was sitting with a concerned look on his face. Jean was beside him with a mirrored expression. Rogue stood away from the others, she wasn’t paying any attention to the others. Ororo, sitting in her usual seat looked at Scott’s somber expression, she was wondering what he was thinking.
“Scott, what is it?”
“I was thinking that with the way things are turning out, that Jean and I were thinking of retiring.” The whole team, or what was left of it, was shocked at what they had just heard. Rogue looked at them with a look of betrayal on her face.
“What?! I don’t believe what I just heard. First Professor X, then Beast, now you and Jean! What sort of team is this anyway? The next thing you know the X-Men will be disbanded.”
Ororo, Logan, and Remy all looked at each other carefully.
“Listen darlin,” Logan said coming to Rogue, “I know how you feel, the X-Men are like family to me too. But, we must face the facts, we do have lives outside the team, and those who want to pursue them have a right to. It doesn’t make things any easier, but families do go their separate ways.”
“Logan’s right Rogue,” Ororo said, “There is a time to let go. This is that time. The team itself may not be together, but the dream of the X-Men will always be there.”
“What is a dream, if no one is there to full fill it?”
“Chere, come on now, you know that this day would come sooner or later.”
“Yes I did, just not so soon. But Gambit, it’s not like you would really care what happens to the X-Men. You can always go back to being a thief”
“Is dat all you see me as Chere? A t’if? Fine words comin from you,”
“And what is that suppose ta mean?”
“I th’nk you know good and well Chere. All I steal is material t’ings, but you, you steal people’s souls. What makes them who day ‘re.” Rogue was in a state of shock, and of anger. She couldn’t believe what she just heard, or whom it came from. Taken aback by this, all she could do was fly out of the room as fast as she could.
Remy immediately regretted his words, but it was too late, the damage was done. ****
With Professor X, Beast, Cyclops, Jean, and most possibly Rogue leaving, Gambit, Wolverine, and Storm were wondering what to do.
“I guess that the X-Men is no more.” Storm said, sitting on the couch in the living room. Logan, who was sitting beside her, nodded.
“It would seem that way.” He looked over at Gambit, who was sitting in front of the fire, staring at its flames. “Don’t worry Cajun, she’ll forget about it by tomorrow.”
“I’d like ta believe ya, but the belle ain’t that good at forgetting t’ings.” He turned around and looked at them, “So now with the X-Men gone, what are you two goin to do?”
“Me, I think I’m going to go solo. What about you Storm?”
“I don’t know Logan. What are you going to do Remy?” He thought a while before speaking.
“Stormy, why don’t you and moi go into business together.” She raised her eyebrows in question. “In New Orleans. I th’nk dat dey need a couple of good t’ifs. What about it, eh?”
“I guess I can come along, it might be fun.” ****
The next day came the final day the X-Men were a team. The tension was thick between all present. The thickest was between Rogue and Gambit as they gathered to bid good-bye to the team.
Logan was the first to go, he left swiftly, not waiting for the others to see him off. Then it was Rogue’s turn. She gave Ororo a hug, before going to Jean and Scott.
“Take care y’all.”
“We will. And you Rogue, what are you going to do now?”
“I talked to Raven, and until I know what to do, she said that I can stay with her.” She looked at Scott and nodded to him. Sparing only a glance to Remy as she flew off. Remy and Ororo left next to depart.
“That care of the mansion.”
“We will. You guys stay safe,”
“And out of trouble.”
“Why Slim, you don’t know us very well, mon ami.”
Jean and Scott watched as the last of their extended family left. He put his arm around her as they looked around in the mansion.
“It is too quiet, Scott.”
“I know Jean, but you know us, as soon as you leave here, you always find your way back again.”
“I hope you’re right. But I only hope that the reason for their returning is not on of heartbreak.”
**** THE END ****
