Notes on amendments and other queries

Now that “Wiltons Galore” has been distributed, various interesting questions are being asked about some of the contents.  This is what we all hoped would occur.  It is encouraging to have one of our aims being met.  Some of these queries are of interest to researchers of associated families besides those researching Wilton. I will update this page as the items of interest arise.
If you wish to follow-up on any of this information with me, then email Jo at the address above.

SUPPLEMENT 1. The additions and amendments collected February to May 2007.

Family members who failed to order a copy by the deadline and missed out on the printed version may contact the publisher at wiltonsgaloreupdates@gmail.com

Not all errors / typos have yet been found, I am still working through them, however some of the following are available:-

  • Registered birth names have been given
  • Pin numbers corrected
  • Dates corrected
  • Name spelling corrections
  • Descendants lists, the odd family is out of order, sorry - that was a formatting problem trying to fit family into 2 columns per page to save space using Excel (cut and paste …) FTM outline descendants charts sadly do not transfer well to MS Office.  I managed to reduce something like 134 pages to about 23 using this system.

p.91

At the bottom of the page - the quotation attributed to Priscilla CURTIS, "When she saw what they had come to she sat on her trunk and said she would not take off her clothes until they took her back."  There is some debate here as to whether this was actually Elizabeth (DENMAN )WILTON who said this. Helen Waugh was also told this story by an elderly member of the Wilton family, not Curtis family. Remembering that Elizabeth had spent the voyage being very sick, vomiting from possible sea sickness and also being pregnant at the time. Whoever did say it, it expresses their dismay as to the conditions they would have to endure in the new colony.

KILMISTER v KILMINSTER       spelling error

p. 216-217   Martha Delilah KILMI(N)STER #J3745 m Allan Joseph WILTON #J3740. Please correct your book.
This spelling irregularity arose from transcription errors. Seemingly several are amongst the records in repositories.
References:
i.      Jocelyn Fisher’s JUDD Family History gives the correct spelling of Kilmister.
ii.     There are many less people in NZ named Kilminster compared to Kilmister.

iii.    There is a website with the wrong spelling on it for this marriage probably originated from the same error as ours.
iv.     From one descendant of John Kilmister who gave me this -

“Entry no 792, application 2043 shows Kilmister John, wife Frances, occupation Cooper, ages 32 and 30 accompanied by 3 male and 1 female child.”

v.     Ward in his book "Early Wellington" for some reason recorded the name as Kilminster.

vi.    There is a written KILMISTER history
