~L.M.Montgomery~ Lucy Maud Montgomery came into the world on November 30, 1874 in Clifton, on the North Shore of Prince Edward Island, Canada. (See PEI map of Clifton) Lucy was the only child of Hugh and Clara Montgomery. Clara, Lucy's mother, died when she was less than two years old. Her father moved and Lucy had to go live with her grandparents. Later in her years, Lucy attended the Prince of Wales College in Charolottetown. She received her teacher's license in one year instead of two. After one year as a teacher on the Island, she later went to study at the Dalhousie College in Halifax, NovaScotia.
After a while there, she found out that her grandfather had died and she had to quit school to help take care of her grandmother. While living there, she wrote the famous novel, "Anne of Green Gables." She had started writing it in 1905 and later finished it in1906.
But it was in 1908 that the L.C. Page Company in Boston agreed to publish it. "Anne of Green Gables' was an immediate success so she decided to write the sequel to Anne called, "Anne of Avonlea."
In 1906 Lucy married the minister of the Cavendish Presbyterian Church. His name was Ewan MacDonald. They kept their engagement a secret for a while because Lucy wanted to make sure her grandmother didn't need her help anymore. When Lucy andEwan finally decided to get married, they moved to Ontario in 1911. They alsobore two children. Chester who was born in 1912, and Stewart who was born in 1915. Lucy became ill and died in 1942 at the age of 67. She is buried close to the house known as Green Gables. She is rememebered by her friends and family and her spirit lives on through her novels. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Lucy Maud Montgomery 1874-1942
