Literary efforts of Melody Madsen of Cottonwood (California)

In October, one of her poems, "Lessons Learned by You," was selected by the popular Web site, Poetry.com, to be included in its anthology, "Twilight Musings."

The part-time clerk for the city of Redding, mother of three daughters and grandmother of three, is very busy, but she's able to fit writing in. She's also hard at work on a book about what it's like to be a pastor's wife.

"It will be a collection of poems, anecdotes, recipes and helpful hints for those that are, or are interested in what it's like to be a pastor's wife," Madsen said.

Her husband, Pastor Eric Madsen of Cottonwood Bible Church, is so proud.

"He was so excited when I told him the poem was selected," Madsen said. "He didn't even know I submitted it."

Melody Madsen's mother-in-law, Betty Madsen, is particularly proud, as she was the inspiration.

Madsen, 48, has dabbled in writing since she was a small child, but until now it's only been for special occasions, friends and family.

Five of her poems can be read on poetry.com. She's unsure if she will submit poetry to the site again as she wants to pursue other writing venues.

She is however, trying to build a solid portfolio of publications in order to gain support for future writing endeavors.

Madsen hopes her book in progress, "A Day in the Life of a Pastor's Wife," will be well-received.
