A Review from TNT's Roughcut
Take any ordinary large-scale adventure film, add the musical genius of Oscar-winning Titanic composer James Horner, and you almost assuredly end up with an Academy-Award nomination. Horner's track record speaks for itself: Apollo 13, Braveheart, Legends of the Fall, and Titanic, all of which earned him nominations. This month, Horner's latest effort slashes its way into the spotlight on the blade of Tri Star's new release, The Mask of Zorro. Horner's 12 piece original score is teeming with Spanish and Mexican flavor, which reflects the movie's "Spanish conquest of Mexico" setting. Spanish guitar strumming, castanets clapping and Mexicali-style trumpeting, all blend to give the score a spicy sound befitting of high-energy horse chases, dusty trails and rolling tumbleweeds. Included on the soundtrack is one original song, "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You," cowritten by Horner and lyricist Will Jennings, who wrote the lyrics to "My Heart Will Go On" for Titanic. The song is a duet, sung by Australian pop-sensation Tina Arena and tropical music star Marc Anthony. This soundtrack, unlike so many others, captures and manifests the film's story in and of itself.
