A Review from TNT's Roughcut
Roughly, the 45th feature about frontier California's
masked folk hero stars a suave Anthony Hopkins as
the graying Zorro and a ruddy, rutty Antonio Banderas
as the vengeful, impertinent bandito he tames and tutors to
become his swordsman's apprentice. GoldenEye director
Martin Campbell's personable modern swashbuckler
boasts well-conceived, world-class sword-fighting, some droll
mental jousting, gorgeous panoramic landscapes and a stunning
porcelain doll of a heroine (Catherine Zeta-Jones).
Regrettably, the villains -- Matt Letscher and
Stuart Wilson -- are as bland as flour tortillas,
diluting the potency of the story (which, itself, is a
patchwork culled from other myths such as Batman and
Star Wars). Still, at the end of the day, it's the
comely combo of Hopkins, Zeta-Jones and Banderas that lures
the crowd and guarantees there isn't a dry seat in the house.
