Amanda Wilson-Mitchell

Interview 1
November 2000

You have been in the junior division (both national and international) for a few years now, and picked up nationals even medals along the way. How do you feel about how you did in the junior division?
It was good, slightly average in certain parts of my comps, but good.

You move up to the senior division in 2001, how do you feel about that?
I feel a bit unprepared because I've had six months off from injury, but looking forward to a new experience.

How well do you think you will be able to mix it with the established Australian seniors next year, given their successes in recent years?
I expect just what has been shown, but I guess I'll just have to keep trying and eventually I'll beat them.

What are your major goals and aims for 2001, your first year in the senior division?
Just to perform my routines to the best as possible for myself. I'm not gonna concentrate on a gold medal, just a personal gold for my scores.

How do you feel being the second most senior gymnast now at the Western Australian Institute of Sport with the recent retirements of Tam Le and Jenny Smith?
Okay, normal I guess, but I've still got to focus on training and not let small things get in my way.

Have you recently upgraded any of your skills and/or routines, for 2001?
I have little changes. This past year has been really difficult through my injuries and not being able to train has pushed me back a step.

Do you have any competitions planned for 2001 so far?
I'm not sure. I'm just focusing on nationals, or I think I comp before that. I just have to train.

If you could change one thing about your career so far, what would it be?
My one thing would be... my training habits. Not having one 'up' day and the next an average day - to be able to do more learning that way.

What do you consider as your main motivation for continuing the hard training?
To go to an Olympics or Commonwealth Games, and have my (extended) family say "that's Amanda," that would be nice.

What qualities do you feel gymnastics gives you as a person?
Organisation. I used to be really disorganised but you have to have good time management, and also my attitude. I used to be... unpleasant but I learned (ages ago) that it did nothing and got me nowhere.

For how long do you anticipate staying in gymnastics?
I don't know that. I'll just see what happens.

What do you consider as your long-term goals in gymnastics?
To be able to go to the Olympics or Commonwealth Games, and have my (extended) family say "that's Amanda," that would be nice.

What are your favourite achievements and memories in gymnastics so far?
My first gold medal at the age of 6, and my first state medal. It was bronze on bars in, I think, 1995 or 1996. And Canberra Cup 1999.

What do the senior gymnasts in Australian Gymnastics mean to you? How much do they motivate you to achieve bigger and better things? Is there anyone in particular that you look up to?
I'm always looking at Allana's achievements and asking her some questions. The current Aussie gymies motivate me heaps, 'cause I like to compare myself to what others are doing.
