Interview 1
January 2002

Although you didn't get to compete (being the reserve), how was the experience of your first World Championships last year, in Ghent, Belgium?
It was fantastic just being there and looking around and seeing the big name gymnasts training right beside you.

How did it feel to be selected for your first major international competition - the East Asian Games earlier last year?
Shocked because I was called up at the last minute, but I really enjoyed that competition.

Are you happy with your first year at the senior level?
Yes, I've had a few good competitions and I've had a good time at them.

What do you consider to be your best achievement last year?
Making the World Championship team definitely. I worked hard to be there.

How have you found the new Code of Points?
Adjusting to it has been as expected difficult for some things. Mostly beam is hard to get the connections bonus. At Worlds the scores were very up and down so I think the judges are having a bit of trouble as well.

Are you working on any new skills and/or routines?
Yes, I'm in the process of getting a new floor routine and for everything else I'm just working on connections.

Do you have any more competitions planned for the coming months?
Not soon due to my foot injury. There are 3 big comps next year - Pacific Alliance, Commonwealth Games and World Championships.

How is school going? How long do you have before you graduate?
Well I'm doing senior over 3 years so I've got 2 more years left.

What have you been up to lately apart from gymnastics?
NOT MUCH.

What are your major goals and aims for 2002?
To maintain a National Championship title and to just work hard and see how I go. I'd love to make the World Championship team again next year.

How do you feel now that you are an established member of the senior team, after looking up to the senior gymnasts for so many years?
It's a bit weird cos I've worked so hard to be a senior international gymnast and now I'm being selected from for major competitions.
