September 2000

In 1998 you won the sub junior national championship. How did it feel to achieve that great honour?
To be honest, I didn't really know how I felt. I was in shock for ages. I guess overall I was pleased.

1999 marked moving from sub junior to the junior division. How did you feel about this difficult transition?
I thought it would have been a lot easier. I actually found it hard. But I'm battling through it.

When do you move up to the senior division, and how do you feel about that?
I move up when I'm about 15 (in 1½ years). I feel okay about it. I look at it as being junior but at a higher level.

If you could change one thing about your gymnastics career so far, what would it be, and why?
I don't think I would change anything to be honest because if I were to change anything I wouldn't look at gym the same way.

Just recently, you moved from the Australian Institute of Sport to the Westfields Gymnastics School in Sydney. Do you think this move was a good option, and how is it helping your career?
Yes I think it was a good option. I really missed my family and that affected my training a lot. Now I feel more happy in training.

What were your major goals and aims for the rest of 2000?
To bring the level of my routines up to the start value of 9.5 and above.

Have you recently upgraded any of your skills and/or routines?
Yes, I have a new skill on beam and bars.
Beam: Split full and double back dismount
Bars: Pak salto and healy turn

Which competitions do you have scheduled for the rest of 2000?
I don't think there are any comps coming up because Canberra Cup has been cancelled.

Do you have any other interesting goals in life for the year 2000?
To get as many new skills as possible.

Who and what do you consider as your main motivation for continuing the hard training?
When I train the thing I think about is competition. I really enjoy competing.

For how long do you anticipate staying in gymnastics?
Until 2004.

What do you consider your long-term goals in gymnastics?
To get to the highest level I can.

What did the senior gymnasts in the AIS gym mean to you? How much do they motivate you to achieve bigger and better things? Is there anyone in particular that you look up to?
The girls at the AIS gave me a lot of support. With them doing hard skills made me wonder what I would be doing in my time. So I keep working for my goals. I don't really look up to anyone.
