August 2000

Since you retired from gymnastics in 1997, what have you been doing with yourself?
Finished Yr 12 in 1998 and have been coaching full time since.

You qualified for the Australian team for the Atlanta Olympic Games, but withdrew through a back injury. How hard was it for you to walk away from this fantastic achievement? Was it hard to watch the Games?
As you could imagine probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do. Yes it was very hard.

After the Olympics, you continued your career until the 1997 Nationals. What was it that made you decide that your career was over?
I had a terrible competition - (worst I've ever had) and decided I'd never get back up to a decent standard. So I did level 10 for a while and left due to injury.

Was it difficult to leave gymnastics? Why/Why not?
Yes very difficult because I only knew one way of life. I lived away from home for the whole of my gym career with families (Armbrusters, Skinners, A.I.S) and it was difficult moving back home to Bribie Island.

Has your back recovered fully from the injury now?
No. Definitely not. When I left the A.I.S it was recommended that I not play sport again. I did gym within three months and started to play netball about 5 times a week. Making my back worse than ever. Now it's only really sore on colder days.

What do you consider to be your favourite moment in your gymnastics career?
Making the 1996 Olympic Team.

What do you feel were the positives that you got from your time in gymnastics?
Everything. It has made me who I am today.

What do you feel were the negatives that you got from your time in gymnastics?
Injuries.

What do you consider to be your greatest personal achievement - either in gymnastics or in life generally?
Well, making the 1996 Olympic Team after about 4 years of training.

Overall, looking back on your gymnastics career, are you satisfied with what you achieved?
No. Definitely not.

If you could have changed one aspect of your career, what would it have been?
I should have started at an earlier age.

Who is the gymnast that you most admired, and why?
Kirsty-Leigh Brown. She is mentally the strongest person I have ever met. A great inspiration to the gymnastics community. And a fantastic friend.

Which competition did you enjoy the most, and why?
1993 Nationals. My first Nationals (sub junior stage four). It was just me, Lisa Skinner and Rebecca Wilson. I had only been doing gym for about 1 year so it was all very new to me.

What was your favourite and least favourite apparatus and why?
Beam was my favourite training apparatus (but least favourite comp apparatus). Floor was my least favourite apparatus. Because we had the Olympic compulsory routines to do.... and it was so tiring.

Do you still keep in touch with any of your former teammates or friends in the sport?
Yes, well the old Queenslanders, Rebecca Wilson, Rebekah Armbruster and Lisa Skinner (when she in this state... lol) and myself we're all very good friends. Kirsty-Leigh Brown is another great friend.

What do you hope the future holds for you?
Well I'm coaching now. Hopefully we can mold some State/National Champions.
