Summary: Southern Belle Buffy Summers meets Angelus Donavon, her handsome new neighbor.  They are instantly attracted to each other.

Buffy knelt down to pluck one of the new roses then placed it in the basket with the other flowers she had chosen. She liked picking flowers for her parents parties. Usually, it was the only way she was able to participate without messing something up.  She heard a familiar voice coming from across the yard calling, "Buffy! Buffy!"

"Over here!" Buffy shouted.

"Hello!" Willow held her hand over her chest as she heaved for air.

Buffy wondered what had excited Willow to the degree that she ran all the way to the gardens.

"What's wrong now?" Buffy frowned at her childhood friend.

"Nothing. I just wanted to come to check on you," Willow responded with a hurt expression.

"I'm sorry, Wil.  I didn't mean to sound so grumpy," Buffy smiled softly toward her.

"It's okay. I know you have not been feeling well, so I wanted to check on you. Your Mom said I would find you out here."

Willow looked around the fabulous garden the Summers' had created. It amazed her that Buffy's mother, Joyce Summers, always kept her garden alive, no matter how severe the weather.

"The BIG PARTY is tonight," Buffy said as she rolled her eyes with disgust.

"What's wrong? I thought you loved your parents' parties?" Willow asked.

"I usually do but not this time. They say this one is to get to know our new neighbors, but I'm not stupid.  I know the real reason is to find a suitable husband for me." Buffy's hands trembled with anger at the thought of their obvious subterfuge.

"You are only seventeen, what's the big hurry?" Willow chuckled. She walked to the marble slab, which had been fashioned so people could sit while enjoying the garden.

"That's what I keeping asking," sighed Buffy as a sad expression came into her eyes.  "I mean I feel as if they are in a hurry to rid themselves of me."  Buffy's voice trembled with unshed tears, but she refused to cry until she gained the privacy of her own room.

"I know your wrong about those fears." Willow patted Buffy's shoulder for support.

"Why am I wrong?" Buffy questioned.

"You are wrong because your parents adore you. They think you are the reason the sun sets and the moon shines.  Perhaps they just fear you might pick the wrong sort of husband if they don't help you find the right one." Willow frowned. She wondered if this made any sense to Buffy?

"I think I see your point. However I don't want a husband who merely has the perfect qualities, I want a husband who makes me feel as if I am the only woman in the world," Buffy sighed heavily.

"I think every woman wants that." Willow giggled.

"Do you think I will ever find a man like that?" Buffy asked with a gleam of hope in her eyes.

"If you do, I hope he has a brother for me." Willow teased.

"Me too," agreed Buffy as they fell into laughter.

"I just don't understand why we have to attend this thing!" Angelus cried out in anguish toward his mother. He hated formal dinners and parties. Every mother he came in contact with would throw her eligible daughter in his face.  If he wanted a wife, he would pick one on his own.

"Angelus, we are new in this city. It would not hurt to meet our new neighbors and their friends. It is also a great opportunity for you to make more business acquaintances. You must get out more, son. Come now, you're not growing any younger." Angeline Donovan-Wainwright encouraged her eldest son to see things from her point of view.

"I understand the business aspect, but you know as well as I do that the mothers will be throwing their unwed daughters in my face. You would think my reputation alone would stop them, but NOOO!  All that matters is that I am a wealthy landowner.  Its horrible." Angelus covered his eyes with his hand; his head was beginning to hurt just from the thought of attending another boring party.

Angeline smiled proudly at her son as she said, "I assure you that your looks, in addition to your fortune, have something to do with your popularity."

Angelus was the eldest of her children. Angelus' birth father had died a month before he was born.  Barely out of the yearlong mourning, Angeline had been shocked to find herself attracted to a near stranger with a son the same age as her own.  Yet Joseph Wainwright proved a loyal husband, devoted father and smart businessman.

Once they were married she had raised her son along with his, William Wainwright.  It worried her as the years passed without adding to their family. Then just when Angeline had given up hope of having more children, their daughter was born.  Faith was an exceptional child. She dealt with the teasing and roughhousing her older brothers inflicted upon her. It quickly became apparent that she would be something of a tomboy.

Luckily for her parents, once Faith turned thirteen her body began to change causing Faith to take more of an interest in her appearance and behavior.  Yet around her fifteenth birthday, Faith began to show signs of being a little more than her parents had bargain for.  Faith was quite aware of her sensual body and dark smoldering brown eyes.  Soon William and Angelus were constantly fighting back the boys and men attempting to seduce their young sister.

"Besides, Faith will need your help. She dreads these parties as you do, but unlike you her insecurity around strangers leads her to fear them." Angeline knew emotional blackmail was unfair, but she also knew it would get Angelus to join them.

"Mother, you are a wicked lady." Angelus shook his finger at her.

"With a wicked son." Angeline laughed.

"Very well mother, I shall attend. But I warn you I will leave at the first opportunity." Angelus said with a smirk.

"Very well." Angeline agreed to the compromise.

"Go find your sister and tell her it is time for her to prepare for the party." Angeline put down her sewing and headed to her husband's study to remind him that he, too, must attend the festivities.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Buffy finally entered the scene she saw familiar faces around every room.  She couldn't resist the urge to yawn.  This was not her idea of fun anymore.  What had happen to the excitement she once felt when at last she was granted permission to stay up and dance the night away?  When did the gossip stop sounding curiously fun and turn instead to horrible mud throwing?  Why was she not curious to who was dressed in what?

Where had all the fun in her life gone, she wanted to cry out to the room full of people?

"There you are." She turned her head slightly and put on her "I'm so happy" face.

"Hello." Buffy replied with a joyous tone.

"I've been dying to see what you chose to wear." Cordelia Chase walked up to her hostess' daughter.

"So now my dress is the topic of each evening." Buffy glared at her archenemy.  That was the best way to describe Buffy history with Cordelia.

Buffy had tried to win over Cordelia for years, but stopped once she saw that it was a useless effort. Then, instead of Buffy chasing Cordy's dress, she began to step on it, hoping someday to make Cordy's life a living hell.  She would never understand why a girl as lovely as Cordy had to be so cruel and selfish? Nor did she care at this point.

"You wish." Cordelia rolled her eyes and placed a sarcastic smile on her face.

"I'm afraid you wouldn't like what I wish for." Buffy's eyes stayed steady as she challenged Cordy to utter another word.

"Very well." Cordy sighed with a bored expression on her face as she stepped away.

Willow had been approaching the girls when she noticed the look of disgust on Buffy's face and decided to wait until Cordy exited. She knew how much the two hated one another. She once tried to get them to work out their differences, but then Cordy had to do something so horrible that not even Willow could stop Buffy's hatred of the brunette.  No one really cared for Cordy, not even her parents.

"I see your best friend extended her greetings." Willow teased Buffy.

"Yes! I can always count on her to remind me of my failings."  Buffy bit down hard on her tongue to keep from crying. It wasn't that she wanted to cry because Cordy said anything to her, but it was from remembering how hurtful Cordy could be. She had been one of those singled out for Cordy's exceptional wrath and jealousy.

"Don't say that. You know as well as I do that Cordy may be a bitch but she hurts herself more than anyone else." Willow sighed as she watched Cordelia start her usual pandering to the wealthier families.

"I think I could hurt her worse." Buffy's hands rolled up in tight fists at her sides.

"Now, now. Calm down." Willow patted her on the back gently.

"So, who is here tonight?" Buffy changed the subject. She wasn't going to let Cordy ruin her evening. She knew that when that happened, then Cordy was the winner.

"Everyone. I swear I have never seen so many people in one place before. I can't believe that new neighbors would bring such a crowd." Willow frowned. Exactly who were these new neighbors?

"You would think your parents invited the Queen of England." Willow chuckled.

"She probably did send a invitation." Buffy cracked a smile.

"I see she can still smile." Alexander Harrison responded.

"Alex!" The girls said in union as the handsome young man approach them.

"You two are still the prettiest women in the county." Alex kissed each of them on the cheek before stepping back to look at the beautiful dresses they had donned for the party.

"I declare that is an unexpected color you're wearing Willow." He wasn't use to her wearing anything but pink. Her mother had assisted that pink was the most appropriate color for her dark red hair. After a year of this consistent color, Willow, finally got her permission to try something else. Tonight she wore a soft lime green colored dress that made her eyes look darker than usual.

"Thank you!" Willow blushed. She wasn't use to being complimented often.

"What about me?" Buffy pretended to pout.

"You look lovely in anything you wear. Dirt mud brown couldn't steal your beauty." Alexander's eyes twinkled.

Willow felt her heart flutter at the way he stared at Buffy. She often wondered while growing up with these two, if Alexander would ever notice her the way he always noticed Buffy?

"You flatter me." Buffy popped open her fan and began to wave it. Alexander knew she was teasing him.

"If you only knew what else I want to do to you." Alexander thought to himself.

"So why was I asked to attend this occasion?" Alexander swiftly changed the subject before beginning to mumble like an idiot. Whenever he was near Buffy, he always seemed to do everything wrong.  Although he had never voiced his true feelings for her, nor would he ever unless she gave him reason to believe she might return them, he knew this was due, in part, to the fact that he worshiped the ground she walked on.

"The Wainwrights, a family from England, has purchased the Lancaster lands as well as a few small businesses in the county. It seems they are a wealthy family who came to America to follow their dreams of an even better day." Buffy repeated the exact words she had heard her mother say while reading the letter that Aunt Lucinda had sent her.

"They almost sound like royalty." Alexander's eyes widen.

"You would think." Buffy made a sound in her throat that let Alexander know that someone was approaching so he might watch what he said.

"Hello, darling; I'm glad to see you finally made it." Joyce Summer gave Alexander a motherly hug before stepping back to look him up and down.

"Thank you, Mrs. Summers." Alexander nearly blushed.  Buffy's mother always made him long for a mother as sweet as she. Instead he had a wicked stepmother only ten years his senior. He was quite relieved that she had talked his father into moving to Boston, where her family was located.

"You're welcome. I hope you will be staying in town from now on. I fear all your traveling will cause you to find some lucky girl never return to us." Joyce teased him. She thought of Alexander as the son she never had. He was a sweet boy who grew up with a harsh father and a mother who had drunk herself to death at an early age. She knew most people feared he would become a replica of his father, but she knew Alexander would prove them wrong.

"I believe your wish is granted, at least for now. I will be staying for some time. My father is taking care of the business from now on." Alexander explained.

"Good. You deserve a rest." Joyce patted him softly on the shoulder before turning to look at her daughter.

"You behave tonight, all three of you." Joyce gave a steady glare before placing a sweet smile back on her face.

"Yes, mother." Buffy nodded her head.

A friend then pulled Joyce away and all three began to laugh.  They knew Joyce was still a bit disappointed in them for drinking too much champagne and retching outside for nearly an hour. Even though this had happen nearly three years ago, she still reminded them of it often.

"Well, I just heard a large flutter of women swooning." Alexander had heard the commotion in the far side of the room and knew that it meant fresh meat had just arrived.

Buffy and Willow turn to see and both felt their hearts tremble as the Wainwrights entered the house.

The Wainwrights had entered the house and were shocked to see so many attending a party in their honor.

"It is nice to see you again." Joyce stepped up to Angeline and shook her hand. Joyce had rode to their home a week earlier to obtain their permission this gathering to get to know everyone.

"As well as you." Angeline said with a smile equal to that of her hostess.

"Joyce, this is my family. The man who constantly wears a frown is my darling husband, Joseph." Angeline glanced up at the man next to her.

Joseph who was normally a very quiet sort couldn't help but smile at his wife's teasing.

"This was so very kind of you Mrs. Summers."  Joseph was impressed with the number of people as well as the expense spared for this party.

"It is the least I can do. I have lived here all my life. The Lancaster's were my godparents. I know they would want me to do this." Joyce explained.

"They were very lucky neighbors as I feel we will be, too." Angeline replied.

"Here on my right is my eldest son, Angelus Donavon. The young gentleman behind him is our dear William Wainwright, and last but not the least of all, our jewel, Faith Wainwright." Angeline was pleased to see all her children showing smiles on their faces as she announced them.

"It is a pleasure to meet all of you. I'm afraid my daughter is lost in the crowd with friends, but I see my husband is making his way toward us." Joyce saw Rupert striding across the crowded room to assist his wife.

"A pleasure to meet you." Rupert said as he came up and shook each of their hands.

"I thought if you would like you could get something to eat and drink before your ears are talked off." Joyce pointed toward the large buffet style tables filled with every kind of finger food and dessert possible.

"That is very kind of you." Joseph said with big eyes. His stomach growled letting them know he had not eaten before coming to the party.

"I'm sure before you leave this evening you will at least know all the faces of the people here in Liberty." Joyce relaxed as she observed her other guests would be gracious enough to let the Wainwrights eat before descending upon them.

  ******************************************************************************

Angelus wasn't sure how long he had been able to escape to the corner without someone attempting an introduction, but he was relieved to find some quiet time. He noticed that the sky had turned dark as he gazed through the window. It was then that he noticed the garden outside the window. He began to think of the night air and the openness of the sky and felt the need to make his way outside.

Walking in the direction of the garden, he took long deep breaths of the clean, cool, night air. This was his favorite part of the parties, finding an escape.

The flowers seem to carry a sweet smell to which he was unaccustomed. It was pleasing and relaxing. After a moment, he caught the scent of vanilla. It was quite sensual.

As he walked around the lavish roses, he accidentally collided with a body.

"I am so sorry." Angelus began, feeling his senses stirring.

"No!  I'm sorry." Buffy replied swiftly. She knew it had not been his fault for bumping into her. People didn't normally sneak out to the gardens just to scare the butterflies out of them. She had hoped to find some peace out here; her head had started to spin from her last glass of champagne. She didn't want her mother aware of her excessive drinking.

"I'm afraid I did not think anyone would be out here." Angelus began to speak to the mysterious stranger.

"Nor did I." Buffy agreed with a frown on her face.

"What's wrong?" Angelus could barely see her face in the moonlight but saw enough to know she seemed worried.

"I'm afraid I had too much to drink. I think my stomach is trying to punish me." Buffy confessed as she walked to the marble seat and sat down gently.

"Are you going to be sick?" Angelus asked with sincere concern in his voice.

"I hope not." Buffy answered softly.

"Lean your head toward your knees." Angelus said as he followed and sat next to her.

Buffy opted to try his advice. Once she bent her head down for a few seconds, the dizziness had faded. She straightened slowly.

"Thank you." Buffy gave him a weak smile.

"Why did you drink so much?" Angelus asked.

"I didn't mean too, I assure you.  I just love the taste of champagne and there wasn't much else to do in there." Buffy looked toward the house with a sad expression.

"I would think a young woman like yourself would be thrilled to attend such a party." Angelus had not expected her answer to his question.

"I'm afraid I'm not like most girls then. Besides, we all know the real reason that young women like myself attend these dreadful things. They are hunting for husbands." Buffy's voice was filled with contempt.

"And you do not want to hunt for one?" Angelus inquired. He felt his heart starting to race with each word she spoke. This girl sounded like a female version of himself. It was incredible. He knew she was beautiful although he still could not see all of her face. Her voice revealed grace, charm, and class.

"Arggh! NO! I feel that true love is not to be sought out. It comes naturally." Buffy expressed her theory on finding true love. She wondered why she was revealing her thoughts with a complete stranger?

"I like your point of view." Angelus agreed with her.  "But what if it doesn't ever come?" Angelus decided to test her theory.

"Oh, it will come. You might not see it for what it really is and perhaps you will let it pass you by, but then I would then say you unlucky at love." Buffy chuckled despite the pain in her stomach.

"Unlucky, eh?" Angelus chuckled as well.

"Who really even knows the definition of pure love?" Buffy sighed heavily.

Angelus knew at this point that she had been hurt.  Not just hurt, but also crushed. Someone had broken her heart. It was the only reason he could think of that would explain why she was disgusted with the thought of chasing down a husband.

"I must confess my parents seem to have something pretty damn close to it." Angelus thought of his parents' behavior and respect for one another. He could only wish for half of what they enjoyed if he ever decided to settle down.

     "Mine too." Buffy sounded disappointed.

"Does that upset you?" Angelus looked toward the girl whose face was still shadowed by the night sky.

"No, it just makes it harder for someone like me to accept the fact that I will never have even half of what they have." Buffy's answered as she trembled from the cool breeze that blew in, out of nowhere.

"No one can say for sure what the future holds. I think we all want to master are own fates, but there is a power out there that is stronger. I think we must get through each day the best we can and hope for a better one." Angelus leaned back as he put his hands behind him on the cold marble slab to support himself.

Buffy looked up toward the sky.

"You do have a valid point." Buffy sighed wearily.

     "Always." Angelus teased her.

"May I ask to whom I am speaking in the dark?"

It had just occurred to Buffy that she didn't even know the man with whom she was sharing so much information. She realized the champagne and collision had caused her to forego the proper greetings, but, at the moment, she didn't really care.

"I'm sorry, my name is Angelus Donavon." Angelus answered her as he looked up at the night sky.

"It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Buffy Summers. Are you new to the area?" Buffy frowned. She did not recognize the Donavon surname.

"Actually I believe I am your new neighbor." Angelus had nearly choked when she announced she was the missing daughter of his hostess.

"But you said your last name was Donavon." Buffy turned to look at him closer. It was really too dark to see his full face. What she could see was enough to make her heart flutter. Why had she not looked at him closer until this moment?

"I'm the son of my mother's first husband. Joseph Wainwright is my stepfather; he has raised me since I was about a year old." Angelus explained his connection to his family.

"Oh." Buffy replied. She began to hear voices cooing toward them. She wasn't sure why but she started to panic.

"We should go." Buffy jumped up from the seat. She regretted this action as her entire body started spinning uncontrollably once again.

Angelus anticipated this the instant she froze.   Standing up, he reached out to grab her waist before she hit the ground.

"I'm feeling funny again." Buffy cried out in misery.

"Where can we go so no one will see you?" Angelus found himself wanting to protect her from a scandal. He didn't know much about this town, but he knew enough about people in general to know that if anyone saw the Summers girl out here in the dark with him there would be talk.

"The stables are around the back of the house." Buffy knew there was no way to get back inside the house with out anyone seeing them.

"Here let me help you." Angelus placed one of her arms around his shoulder while he led her toward the stables.

"This is ...so ...embarrassing." Buffy felt tears stinging her eyes.

"Not to worry," Angelus fought back the urge to laugh. If only she knew how many times he had gotten this drunk, she wouldn't be ashamed.

Angelus saw the large building and easily hurried her inside. Once he shut the door behind them, he then began to wonder if being alone in the stables had been the wisest choice he could have made.

Angelus felt Buffy starting to slip from his hold.

"Hold on." Angelus whispered to her.

Buffy felt weak. Her head was spinning, her heart was racing, and her skin tingled where their bodies made contact.

"I feel funny." Buffy moaned into the crook of his shoulder.

"I know...here." Angelus saw a small stack of hay in the corner. Turning to look back toward the door, he judged that if someone should come in they could not be seen.

Angelus gently placed her down on the hay. He heard a soft sigh slip between her lips as she reclined.

"Are you okay?" Angelus bent down on one knee to get a closer look at her. There was a small lantern in the center of the barn that gave a bit of light in the stable.

     "Yes," Buffy mumbled.

"I'm sorry." Buffy felt her stomach starting to calm down. Lying flat on her back she felt her body starting to relax.

"For what?" Angelus bit down on his lower lip from laughing.

"For making a fool of myself in front of you. Its...well; it is not very ladylike of me." Buffy heard the muffled laughter he was trying to hide from her.

"Oh!" Buffy swung her fist out into the air and hit him squarely on the shoulder.

"OW! What was that for?" Angelus smiled.

"You find this humorous." Buffy felt her pride sting briefly.

"No, it is just that I can relate to your pain. I have washed my sorrows and regrets in a good glass of brandy one time too many." Angelus explained his laughter toward her hardship.

"Oh." Buffy said with a small yawn.

"Are you tired?" Angelus asked. He didn't like the sound of that. If she fell asleep how was he going to get her in the house without anyone noticing?

He sat down next to her trying to formulate a plan to maintain her pride and dignity, not to mention prevent her good name from being forever tarnished. Yet as he leaned his head back on the hay he began to feel fatigued as well. It had been a long day; he would have never predicted ending up in a barn with his new neighbors' daughter.

Chpt. 4

Willow woke up with a start. Reaching out beside her she felt for an
extra body. No one.

"Shit!" Willow swore under her breath.

Buffy hadn't return to her room. Where had she gone? Who was she with?
What was she thinking?

Willow snuck down the stairs, still in her dress from the previous
evening. Exiting through the back door, she began to look around the yard.
She wasn't sure why, but her instincts told her that Buffy was somewhere on
the grounds, but where?

She heard the low sounds of the servants starting a new day. She knew
that if anyone but she found Buffy it would start up a mess of gossip. It
wasn't that the servants didn't care about Buffy, it was just something
everyone did these days.

She was going to wring Buffy's neck when she found her. Her friend had
finally put that last nasty bit of gossip behind and was already starting on
something new. What in God's name could have been worth this?

She heard the sounds of horses. The stables? Of course! Buffy was
known to fall asleep in the stables.

Willow rushed across the yard and opened the barn door. It took her a
few seconds for her eyes to focus in the dimly lighted room. As the sun was
just starting to rise, she didn't have much by which to see.

"Buffy? Buffy?" She called out in a low whisper.

No response. She took a few more steps inside and began to search around.

Then as she turned the corner she heard something rustling around in the
hay followed with a low moan.

Willow prayed she was not about to walk up on a lusty couple that had
lost track of time.

"Buffy? Buffy?" Willow repeated.

"Ow...God!" Buffy began to sit up as she heard her name being called.
When she finally managed to open her eyes she felt a stinging sensation on
her skin. She had some how fallen asleep in the stables again? What had
happen to her? Then something moved next to her.

Buffy thought she might jump out of her skin as an arm found its way
around her waist. She choked back the scream building in her chest.
Hesitantly she looked behind her to see that she had not only fallen asleep
in the barn but hadn't done so alone.

"What have I done?" Buffy moaned with tears stinging her eyes.

"Buffy?" Willow repeated.

"Over here." Buffy ran her hands through her knotted hair.

Willow heard her voice and felt enormous relief. She was in the stables
and not in any kind of danger. Then when she found Buffy she found a man as
well.

"What is going on?" Willows hands sat upon her hips, as she demanded an
answer from her best friend.

"I don't know." Buffy picked up the hand of the stranger and put it down
gently beside herself.

Buffy was just about to stand when the stranger sat up abruptly scaring
the dickens out of the girls.

"What in blazes?" Angelus sat up as if he had been hit by lighting.

"I agree with him." Willow frowned at the couple.

"What time is it?" Angelus rubbed his sleep filled eyes.

"The sun is just rising." Willow snapped.

"What happen?" Buffy's stomach knotted up at the prospect of what might
have occurred between them.

"I think.... well...you were drunk. You were sick... and we heard voices
and didn't want people to find you in that state so we snuck in here. I guess
we fell asleep." Angelus explained. His throat was dry and hoarse.

"Was that all?" Buffy forced herself to look at him straight in the face.

"Yeah," Angelus frowned at her.

"Oh" Buffy exhaled deeply.

It was then that Angelus finally got a good look at her face. Through
their entire conversation last night, he had wondered what she might look
like. Now that he saw her, she was everything he had imagined and more.

Chpt. 5

"I do not mean to sound rude, but we need a plan to get you to the house
and fast. Your parents might be sleeping in, but the servants are not."
Willow scolded them with a frustrated face.

"She is right." Angelus chewed on his lower lip as he tried to focus on
a solution to their little crisis rather than staring at the beautiful woman
with whom he had slept with yet not laid a hand upon.

"It is simple really. I will just walk to the house and go to my
bedroom," Buffy look at them with a calm expression.

Angelus and Willow gave each other a knowing look before turning their
attention back to her.

"Oh yes, a brilliant plan." Willow spouted out sarcastically.

"I know. Think Wills; I have often slept in the stables. No one will bat
an eye at the sight of me with hay in my hair. Now if they see Angelus
walking out with me, that might cause a few heads to spin." Buffy gave them
each a wide grin. She was extremely proud of her quick thinking.

"So the real problem is sneaking him out." Willow thought out loud.

Angelus looked back and forth between the two young women and noted they
carried on as though accustomed to solving problems such as these.

"I can just walk home." Angelus offered.

"NO!" They both shouted in union.

"Why not?" Angelus frowned at them.

"Because it is too far to walk." Buffy explained with a concern smile.

"Trust me I can handle a few miles." Angelus replied.

"Do you hear that?" Willow froze as she heard an approaching horse.

"Who could that be?" Buffy's smile turn into an instant frown as they
listened.

Angelus jumped to his feet, heading straight to the stable doors for a
peek outside. It took him a few seconds to recognize the rider.

"Oh shit!" Angelus declared then blushed as he realized that he had
cursed in front of the ladies.

"Sorry." Angelus apologized.

"Do not fret. I think we all feel the same." Willow joked with a half
laugh.

"Who is it?" Buffy exclaimed.

"My brother." Angelus sighed heavily.

"Why is he here?" Buffy asked.

"I would bet my fortune he has come to find me." Angelus shook his head
in disbelief.

"Willow go get him before he goes to the front door." Not giving Willow
time to consider her options, Buffy shoved her out the stable door with all
her might.

Willow began to walk in a speedy pace without actually running.

She watched as a fair-haired man began to dismount.

"Excuse me! Excuse me!" Willow called out to the stranger.

She prayed that he heard her half shout; once he knocked things could go
terribly wrong.

Chpt. 6

William Wainwright was not in a good mood this morning. His sister had
woken him at the crack of dawn, informing him that their elder brother had
not come home the night before. He had tried to persuade her not to be overly
concerned about Angelus; however, he had not accomplished his goal. Faith had
pulled the covers from him and thrown a fresh pitcher of cold water on him
before threatening to tell their parents about his gambling debts unless he
searched for their brother at once.

He would never understand why everyone was so concerned about his
brother? Angelus was one of the luckiest bastards he had ever known. He
always had the better-looking mistress and acquired money as if it grew in
the garden.

In a matter of minutes, he dressed and began scrounging the local
taverns and hotels for his errant sibling. Of course no one had seen him.
Eventually, it dawned on him to try the Summers' plantation. It was the last
place anyone had seen him. Suddenly, William was unsure if Angelus had been
injured, robbed on his way home or had found a local girl and taken her for a
quick toss in the hay.

Just as he dismounted, he heard a feminine voice calling from a few
yards away. Turning his head, he saw a red headed young woman practically
running across the gardens trying to get his attention. His instincts told
him that Angelus had found some kind of trouble.

"Sir.... could you please help me." Willow exhaled deeply once she got
close enough that only he could hear her.

"I will try my best." William said, looking her over a few times before
allowing his eyes to stay above her chest.

"I'm afraid that your brother is here, but he is in a sticky situation.
If you would just follow me and do bring you horse." Willow ordered.

William rolled his eyes in disgust. Angelus didn't seem to know how to
avoid trouble when it came to women.

"What has he done now?" William's voice revealed his disappointment in
his brother.

"Nothing exactly. He was helping my friend last night and, well, they
fell asleep and perhaps made the matter much worse." Willow replied as her
eyes constantly scanned for signs of anyone who might be suspicious of why
she was out so early. Luckily, she saw nothing to worry about.

William followed the saucy red head to the stables. She opened the door,
and he followed her inside.

"Angelus what have you done now?" William exclaimed with an annoyed look
on his face.

He regretted the words the moment he saw the young lady who stepped out
from behind Angelus. He immediately understood why his brother took the risk
of spending the night. She was very lovely.

"I have done nothing, but I will explain everything later. Right now,
we need to get on your horse and ride swiftly." Angelus demanded.

"Fine." William knew there was no point in arguing once he saw that bull
headed look in Angelus' eyes.

William turned on his heel and marched out of the stables to retrieve
his horse.

Angelus approached Buffy with a crooked smile on his face.

"It was nice to meet you, Ms. Summers. I pray that if we should attend
another party together you do no repeat this episode with someone else."
Angelus was teasing her while at the same time lecturing her.

"Perhaps you can chaperone me." Buffy's eyes sparkled with mischief.

"Someone should. The next man might not be a gentleman like myself."
Angelus warned her.

"You are completely right, sir. I will try to keep my honor intact."
Buffy placed her hand over her heart, expressing a vow to him.

"Until we meet again." Angelus took her hand and placed it in his own.
Turning it over to reveal her knuckles he placed a soft kiss on them. Buffy
felt as though fireworks had just gone off in her head.

"Thank you for helping me." Buffy replied with a shaky voice.

"You are now indebted to me." Angelus teased her.

"I will agree with that challenge." Buffy's eyes shone with a passionate
glaze over them.

"It was nice meeting you, too...Willow was it?" Angelus turned his
attention to Buffy's friend who seemed to look at him with a suspicions glare.

"Yes, it was nice to meet you as well." Willow said in a polite voice.

Angelus walked away from the lovely girls and, checking to see if anyone
was nearby, jumped on the back of William's horse and rode away.

Buffy exhaled deeply.

"Okay, I want all the details," Willow demanded, shaking her finger at
Buffy.

"Once I have had a bath and a small breakfast, I will tell you
everything. Well, as much as I can remember." Buffy laughed.

Willow noted that Buffy's face was glowing like a Christmas tree. She
could only wondered whether or not this was a good sign.

Chpt. 7

Angelus stepped into the tub only to discover that the water was hotter
than the devil's kitchen.

"Shit!" Angelus cried out as his skin began to turn a bright pink.

It took him a few seconds to brace himself for the steaming hot water to
cover the rest of his body as he sat fully down. Laying his head back
against the back end of the tub, he closed his eyes and waited for the water
to cool down.

"There you are!" William announced as he threw open the door and marched
inside.

"Have you heard of the word PRIVACY?" Angelus growled up at him.

"Have you heard the words "Keep your pants up"? William replied with a
sarcastic smile on his face.

"My pants were up the entire night, thank you. One might think you
believe me a man of little honor, sir. I remind you that not only are you my
brother but a man worth fighting." Angelus' eyes glared with anger.

"Come off it. You know as well as I do that you have bedded plenty of
women. Are you trying to tell me you've changed since we sailed across the
ocean?" William scoffed.

"I'm telling you that each woman, the number of whom, by the way, is
none of your business, I've joined for a night of illicit pleasure has always
been willing and available." Angelus chose his words wisely.

"Is this your opinion or their families?" William smirked.

"Oh for the love of God, what do you want from me?" Angelus grew
restless with their usual pissing contest.

"I want to know why you spent the night with our neighbors daughter?"
William asked with a serious expression on his face.

" I had slipped away to the gardens, and she came out during the party.
When she bumped into me, I realized she was 'three sheets to the wind'. She
was quite sick to her stomach when we heard voices approaching. I knew the
situation looked bad, so I carried her to the barn in the hope of saving her
reputation. While we waited until the coast cleared, she passed out. I guess
I followed her." Angelus yanked the soap from the adjacent table and began to
work up lather.

"So you're saying you didn't actually toss her around in the hay, then?"
William frowned.

"NO! If you truly consider yourself my brother, you will keep this
quiet. You know as well as I, that we do not need ANY of our names run
through the mud." Angelus eyes pleaded with him to be mature enough to handle
this situation with a closed mouth.

"I understand." William sighed heavily.

"Thank you." Angelus smiled weakly as he began to lather his body.

"So do you like the little bit?" asked William, referring to the Summers
girl.

"She is very nice; she seems to have a gentle soul about her. That is
another reason I did not want to see her hurt. I fear she has already been
hurt enough." Angelus thought back to the way she sounded when she talked
about love. Her voice seemed to carry the hurt she felt deep down.

"I meant, are you interested in her?" William stared at his brother
closely.

"I like her well enough." Angelus shrugged his shoulders.

"Are you going to court her?" William chewed on his lower lip.

"NO! Why would you think of such a thing?" Angelus gasped.

"Our sister and mother excluded, you have never, and I repeat, never,
shown such protectiveness toward a woman." William pointed out.

"So, perhaps I have never met a woman worthy of my protection." Angelus
replied. He looked up at William and wondered why his brother was the least
bit concerned about his feelings toward the Summers girl?

"Why, are you interested in her?" Angelus felt his stomach knot up at
the prospect of William courting the sweet girl with whom he spent the night.

"NO! but I wouldn't rule out playing with the saucy red head." William
teased.

"Willow? Really?" Angelus was surprised at William's answer.

"Why not Buffy?" Angelus asked, curious as to why he cared to know the
answer.

"Because any woman who has spent a night with you is not worth the
effort. Sure, you didn't fuck her brains out, but I HAVE learned my lesson
well when it comes to women who have fallen for you." William answered with a
deep pain in his eyes.

Angelus looked down at the bar soap he held in his hands and knew
William was right. William tried for the attention of a young lady Angelus
had carelessly discarded. It had been a disaster for William and the girl.
William had not spoken to him for nearly a year after the girl had foolishly
compared William's attributes unfavorably to those of Angelus. Although
Angelus had nothing to do with her hurtful words, William still held a deep
grudge toward his older brother. For his part, Angelus had not realized that
William harbored feelings, deep or otherwise, for the childish girl.

Angelus knew he couldn't change the girl's mind about William and
thought his brother better off without her. Instead to ease his brother's
pain, the normally discrete Angelus had made no secret of his temporary
relationship with the girl, thus ruining her chance of a decent marriage.
Angelus felt no guilt for his actions. He would not tolerate anyone hurting a
member of his family. He was extremely protective of the lot.

"What in blazes is that?" William broke the silence as they each turn to
the sound of the noise coming up the stairs.

In seconds the door was burst open yet again, but this time it was their
sister, Faith, who entered with a horrible expression on her face.

Chpt. 8

Faith did not care that her brother was completely nude. All she cared
about was his selfishness at staying out all night without letting them know
he was safe.

She knew that men saw things differently when it came to their own
behavior. She knew if it had been she who had done this, they would both
ruthlessly lecture her about her safety and precious reputation. Oh, but
when it came to them, she shouldn't give it a second thought. Well, she
thought otherwise and planned to inform them so in no uncertain terms.

"I think that you are a bull-headed, uncaring lout!" Faith roared, hands
on her hips and arms akimbo.

"You are a horrible stink head." Faith continued yelling hurtful names.

"Whoa! Calm down and, please, turn around." Angelus moved his hands to
cover his privates.

"Hurry!" Faith turn on her heels and looked the opposite way.

William chuckled under his breath as Angelus stepped from the tub and
drew a towel around his body. He saw the heated anger radiating from Angelus
as he looked at Faith's backside.

"Are you finished yet?" Faith sighed heavily.

"Yes, I am; and so are you." Angelus' replied with an angry stare.

"OH, no you don't. You are not going to look down on me, BIG BROTHER!"
Faith threw her finger in his face as she stepped closer to him.

"Remember your manners, young lady. You are not so big that I can't take
you over my knee." Angelus wanted to laugh at the situation but was tired and
exasperated with both of his siblings for their interrogation of him for
accidentally spending a night in the stables.

"I know how to behave Angelus. Do you?" Faith challenged him.

Taken aback, yet trying to calm his sister, Angelus replied, "Look, I
fell asleep accidentally. I had no intention of staying out all night."

"You know some people do make honest mistakes." Angelus looked in the
direction of William for support. Instead, he saw William grinning like a
cat as he watched the scene before him.

"That is true, sir, but I pray you do not make this mistake again."
Faith eased up a bit when she caught sight of Williams enormous smile.

"I promise to try not to." Angelus promised her.

"Very well. I accept your apology for causing me so much worry." Faith
exhaled deeply.

"Thank you. You are most gracious." Angelus was now teasing her.

Turning her attention to William, Faith asked, "What are you laughing
at?"

"I was just thinking how much you sound like mother when you scold us
so." William grinned.

"I take that as a compliment." Faith smiled proudly.

"Now, where were you?" Faith turn her attention back to her other
brother.

"I... I fell asleep in a barn." Angelus wondered how he would get out of
this one without exposing Buffy in the process. He never cared for lying, but
especially not to his sister.

"A barn?" Faith frowned up at him.

"Yes. I attempted to escape the party and went into the stables to check
out the Summers' stock and fell asleep." Angelus recovered quickly.

"Oh. Are they as lovely as ours?" Faith asked with a naive face.

William burst into laughter at that exact moment.

"What?" Faith snapped at William.

"Nothing... nothing at all." William held his stomach as the laughter
began to hurt his muscles.

"Yes, I would have to agree that at least one of them meets our
standard." Angelus knew where Williams mind had wandered. He had to force his
own laughter back down into his chest. He did not want Faith to know what had
occurred the previous evening; not that she was the sort to gossip but he did
not want her to judge Buffy unfairly.

"I also came up here to let you know that mother has invited the Summers
family over for a private dinner party tonight. She wants you to both cleaned
up and on time. The dinner begins at half past seven." She announced.

"What?" Both men said in union.

"You heard me. Mr. and Mrs. Summers and their daughter will be joining
us for dinner. Mother said this was the least she could do in return for the
lavish party they threw in our honor." Faith quoted.

"Oh." Angelus replied. Faith thought she caught a flash of panic cross
his face before it quickly returned to a smile.

"Remember, do not be late." Faith warned them both before leaving the
room.

"Oh, this will be the best evening I have had in some time." William
chuckled and began to whistle as he followed his sister from the room.

"You might enjoy it, but I fear not all of us will." Angelus said aloud
as he walked to his bed and collapsed for a well-needed nap.

Chpt. 9

Buffy felt as though she was walking on clouds the entire morning. A
little after noon her parents arose from their long and well deserved rest.
She was surprised to hear her mother tell the cook not to prepare anything
for supper.

"Hello, mother." Buffy walked into the parlor where her mother had sat
down with a warm cup of tea.

"Hello, Buffy. How are you this morning?" Joyce smiled brightly at her
daughter.

"I'm feeling wonderful. Why did you tell Millie not to cook supper?"
Buffy sat across from her mother. Picking up the extra cup, she poured tea in
her cup, and then placed one cube of sugar with a drop of honey and cream in
it.

"Because we were invited to dine elsewhere." Joyce said as she sipped on
her hot tea.

"Where?" Buffy frowned.

"Angeline and Joseph Wainwright invited us last night. They are such
lovely people. I just hope everyone is as accepting of them as your father
and I are." Joyce smiled but her eyes showed a sign of fear.

"Why would anyone be cross with them? They just arrived?" Buffy asked.

"Because they are true blood English and Angeline's son is an heir to an
estate in Ireland. So of course, that puts some of our neighbors in a twist.
You must remember that the majority of our neighbors came from poverty. When
they arrived they had to work extremely hard to rise above that level. Some
are still very bitter over how badly they were treated in England." Joyce
shuddered at the memories that Rupert still kept buried inside. She was
blessed to have been born and raised here. Her parents however were from
England. Like her neighbors they left to escape the stringent social barriers
and start a new life of their own.

"I guess I keep forgetting where we all came from." Buffy sat her cup
down and then folded her hands in her lap.

"I want to hear about all the fun you had last night." Joyce stated as
she picked up her stitching.

"It was okay. I just danced, talked, and went to bed." Buffy said with
boredom.

"You didn't meet at least one young man that you fancied?" Joyce smiled
sadly.

She worried that Buffy would never get past her heartache. What happened
had not been entirely her fault. Still, Joyce knew that Buffy blamed herself
nonetheless.

"Not really. I guess, I'm just not in a hurry to leave you and father."
Buffy replied with a weak smile.

"Buffy, we are not in a rush to be rid of you. Oh, don't look at me like
that; I know how you think." Joyce smiled knowingly. She had suspected that
part of Buffy's depression these days was based on the fear that they were
trying to shove her out the door.

"Well, mother, tell me why do parents rush their daughters into marriage
but encourage their sons to wait? I mean it just is not fair." Buffy cried
out with a hurt look on her face.

"I think we fear, as parents, that our daughters will age dramatically
overnight and no decent man will want them. I am, however, pleased that you
are not rushing into marriage. I think it is very mature of you, and I
believe your father agrees with me." Joyce beamed.

"Truly?" Buffy gave a doubtful smile.

"Truly. Now should I send word that Willow will also be joining us this
evening?" Joyce knew that, since Willow's parents' departure to Egypt, the
girl spent most of her days alone. She thought it had been quite selfish on
the part of Willow's mother.

"Of course." Buffy replied.

"I will tell Willow; we need to dress in our finest for tonight." Buffy
offered.

"Thank you, Buffy. I want to say, once more, that we both are very proud
of you." Joyce reach out to gently squeeze Buffy's hand before releasing it
so she could leave the room.

Buffy knew her mother understood her pain and distance. Although her
father understood why she felt the way she did, he was still set on the
theory that once you fall off of a horse you jump back on again. She just
wasn't sure if she was strong enough to do such a thing.

Buffy was climbing the stairs when it finally hit; she was going to see
her hero tonight. At once, she felt all the miserable feelings leave with
just a thought of him. With a light bounce in her step, she slipped up the
stairs, eager to tell Willow where they would be dining this evening.

Joseph Wainwright stood in his den and re-read the letter before Angelus
entered.

"You called for me, father?" Angelus stood in the doorway, waiting to be
given permission to enter.

"Yes, son, I did. Come inside, please, and shut the door behind you."
Joseph replied with a gentle smile on his face.

Angelus often wondered if William would like their father as he aged.
They were almost identical in looks, except that Joseph had dark brown eyes,
the same as their sister.

"I just received news from your Uncle Gavin. It seems that he feels you
should return to Ireland, where he himself can teach you to run the family
estate. I, of course, believe it is your choice. I know that you do not
care much for your Uncle Gavin, but he does have one valid point. He
explains in his letter that if you do not want to accept your inheritance of
the estate, you should let him know so he may designate a new heir." Joseph
said in a calm tone.

Angelus knew how much Joseph hated the Donovans. They were constantly
bickering with his mother about his upbringing. Luckily, she had been blessed
with a second husband who would not cave to their demands.

"Basically, he is giving me an ultimatum." Angelus stated with cold eyes.

"That is how it appears. Of course, he is wise enough not to make a
blunt statement of the kind. But, you and I are quite correct in our
interpretation of what his letter does not state." Joseph chuckled.

"I must confess father, I have enjoyed my freedom and working by your
side all these years. I have made quite enough money without taking a penny
of the inheritance from my maternal family. Yet, a small part of me wonders
if I should leave such an estate in the hands of those greedy fools." Angelus
confided his fears to his father.

"I see where you are headed with this. I can see it is a difficult
decision for you." Joseph sighed. He had always admired the compassion in
one so young, not to mention the fact that he would inherit a title had not
caused him to act superior to his siblings or others. These things had
impressed him deeply.

"I have considered visiting them. Examining things personally before
making my decision, but I can't seem to find the will to leave. Why is that?"
Angelus asked with a frown.

"Perhaps because your heart is not in it." Joseph offered a suggestion.

"I think you may have hit the nail on the head, father." Angelus
chuckled bitterly.

"I think you have plenty of time to decide. I have not heard rumors that
your Grandfather's health is in danger at the moment. Take your time; follow
your heart and instincts." Joseph said supportively.

"I will." Angelus said firmly.

"So, what did you think of that grand affair last night?" Joseph asked.

Angelus felt his insides starting to twist. Why did everyone keep asking
him about last night? Didn't they have anything else to talk about?

Chpt. 11

Buffy took several hours to dress for dinner. Willow and Kat, Buffy's
maid, watched as she threw nearly every dress she owned to the floor.

"I can't get Ms. Ferguson to create you a new design and sew it with in
the next few hours, so I suggest you pick one of these and soon." Willow
teased her best friend.

"I know. I just...well I'm not even sure why I'm so nervous. It is not
like I haven't been to dinner parties before." Buffy blew a piece of loose
hair away from her nose.

"Perhaps it has to do with the fact that you fancy Mr. Donavon more than
you want the rest of us to know." Willow continued to tease her.

"I do not." Buffy rolled her eyes.

"Kat, when was the last time you saw her like this?" Willow queried.

Kat looked between the two young women and knew her best course of
action was to remain silent. But when she caught sight of Ms. Buffy tapping
her foot nervously on the floor she couldn't do it.

"I fear Ms. Willow is not exaggerating ma'am. You haven't acted this
shook up since Master.... well, since he left." Kat stopped the name before
it slipped out. She knew the mere name of the man who had burned the heart of
her mistress could put her in a deeply sad mood for days.

"I want you both to know that I can handle hearing his name now. Reilly
Finn is no longer here; he left me. He decided I was not good enough to
marry, and I have dealt with the blow. But I am not interested in Mr.
Donavon. I think he is a nice man and, perhaps, one I could befriend,
nothing more." Buffy's eyes showed the wall she hid behind whenever acting
stubborn. Neither Kat nor Willow was fooled by her words.

"I believe you." Willow decided to just agree with her and it let it go.

"This one always makes you look radiant." Kat understood Willows
acceptance of Mistress Buffy's words. She then pulled out a dress that had
been pushed to the back of the armoire. It was fairly new to her collection.

Buffy looked at the part silk and part cotton dress that her mother had
personally ordered for her. The cotton part was emerald green while the loose
silk that covered it was of pure white. It dropped just enough on the top
part to expose a small amount of her breast. She preferred the dresses that
hinted at rather than actually exposed her top half.

"Your right, Kat." Buffy cried out in relief.

"What will we do with my hair?" Buffy's brief moment of happiness turn
to panic once again.

"Lets get her in the bath first." Willow rolled her eyes while chuckling
at the sudden mood swings of her best friend.

Willow listened as Buffy chatted with Kat, while bathing, about the
daily events on the plantation. She just hoped that if Buffy did have some
small interest in Angelus Donavon that he did not spurn her the way Reilly
had. She would hate to hang for murder. Because next time, she would kill
the man who hurt her dear friend.

Chpt. 12

Buffy had been to the old Lancaster house many times in her seventeen
years. Yet as the carriage pulled up, she was struck with shock at just how
large the house really was. It amazed her that Matthew and Elizabeth
Lancaster had built such a large house with only two to live in it.

Willow saw Buffy holding her breath as they stood in a room with
Angelus' parents and smug looking brother, William. A few seconds later, they
were greeted by the daughter and Angelus himself.

Buffy's hands trembled at her side as she waited for him to glance her
way. Why did she desire his approval so badly? Why did it matter to her that
he not think her a lush?

"I see we finally get to meet your daughter." Angeline spoke up when she
caught the way William kept staring at the tiny thing seemly glued to her
friend's side.

"Yes, I'm afraid there were so many guests last night that it was
difficult to find her." Joyce replied.

William and Angelus found themselves staring hard at each another.
William chewed on his lower lip to prevent laughing.

"I apologize for the delay in meeting you." Buffy smiled sweetly toward
Angeline. She saw at once the resemblance between mother and son. She was
lovely and looked younger than her age. While musing on their resemblance,
Buffy caught sight of Angeline's daughter as Faith was introduced and found
her to be about the same age as herself. She thought she saw a curious gleam
in Faith's eyes when they were formally introduced.

"Let us go directly to the dinning room, I'm starving." Joseph offered
after the butler announced that dinner was ready.

Buffy watched as the elder Wainwrights locked arms before exiting the
room. As the others began to follow, she noticed Angelus out of the corner
her eye as he walked closer to her.

"How do you feel today?" he whispered.

"Wonderful. Thank you." Buffy smiled up at him. "And you?"

"Fine, although I felt need of a nap to recover from the lack of sleep."
Angelus explained. "You look lovely by the way." Angelus complimented her.

Buffy felt as if she had swallowed a handful of butterflies. Her stomach
seemed to flip flop about; her face felt warm.

"Thank you. You look exceptional, as well." Buffy return the compliment.

As they entered the dining room, they discovered they were seated next
to one another.

Willow caught the sight of them coming last and wondered what they were
discussing, then she, too, noticed the seating arrangements.

Dinner went on as usual. The men talked shop and the women talked
sewing, gardening, and the horrid weather, while the younger set concentrated
on the meal.

"Why are you young people so quite tonight?" Angeline called down to the
table.

The five exchanged a glances before collectively shrugging their
shoulders.

"Perhaps, while we sit in the parlor, you might walk about. The night
appears lovely." Angeline suggested.

"Sounds lovely." Buffy replied with a polite manner.

Angelus stood up while Buffy and Willow followed his lead, then William
and Faith proceeded to follow. Stepping into the back garden, all five seemed
a bit nervous and unsure what to do next.

"Faith, have you been to many of our shops?" Willow was the first to
break the silence.

"I'm afraid I have not had as much time to shop as I would like. Mother
and I have been busy making changes to the house. Though lovely already, she
wanted to make her own imprint." Faith explained with a shaky voice.

William and Angelus locked eyes for a brief second. Both knew how Faith
hated this part. She was very nervous around girls her own age. She had
experienced some bad incidents at the boarding school where their father had
sent her. It had seem to forever scar the poor thing.

"That sounds reasonable." Willow agreed with a gentle tone and genuine
smile.

"We will have to go shopping soon." Willow offered.

"That sounds wonderful." Faith replied politely. She began to fidget
with her hair.

"Do you ride?" Buffy popped up in the conversation.

"Yes!" Faith cried with excitement clearly on her face.

"Me too; we have a few horses. Perhaps we could go for a ride soon,
possibly make a picnic out of it." Buffy invited her.

"That would be lovely." Faith replied.

Angelus saw Faith starting to relax with these two girls. He and William
seated themselves on a bench a few feet behind the girls.

"She seems to have a natural ability to make one feel at ease." William
noted about the Summers girl.

"Yes, she does." Angelus replied with a slight proud tone.

"I'm surprised a girl as attractive, graceful, and compassionate as she
has not been swept off of her feet by now." William commented.

"I fear she had her heart set on someone who let her down." Angelus
revealed.

"Is that what she told you?" William looked at his brother.

"No, not exactly. We had a short discussion of our theory of marriage
and true love. She was strongly against a marriage of convenience and feared
true love would never find her." Angelus confessed a small part of their
conversation.

"Wow! She is rather young to be so cynical." William stated.

"I don't think there is a minimum age limit for a realization of how
unfair life can be." Angelus replied with a hurt look in his eyes.

"William, Angelus, did you know that Buffy's father breeds horses?"
Faith drew the boys into the conversation.

"No, I did not." Angelus replied feeling his cheeks start to burn
slightly.

"My brother fell asleep in your barn last night. I was quite upset when
he did not return. I'm afraid he was investigating your horses when he
accidentally fell asleep." Faith began to tell them the story he had told her.

Both Willow and Buffy felt themselves growing a bit nervous with this
particular topic. Both knew where and with whom he had spent the night, but
neither was about to tell her differently.

"Speaking of which, why don't we take them to our stables." William
suggested with a wicked gleam in his eyes.

Willow gasped and gave him a rude look before checking to see how Buffy
and Angelus were reacting to his suggestion. Both seem to lock their eyes in
a long knowing stare before cracking a smile and following Faith, who had
already started for the stables.

Faith wondered why Willow seemed so offended by Williams's suggestion?
She also wondered why Angelus and Buffy seem to act as if they had already
met? She had not seen Buffy the entire evening and knew she had not seen
Angelus and Buffy talking the night before.

She had a gut instinct there was more to her brother's story. She would
stay silent for now. She knew that everyone deserved some measure of personal
privacy.

"Let's show them our studs, Angelus." William chuckled as he took
Faith's hand and walked quickly toward the stables leaving the other three
with their mouths agape.

Chpt. 13

Buffy sat at her desk scrolling in her private journal. She could not
believe that she was still awake. The clock down the hall had just rung
midnight. She was still keyed up over the last two days.

She had spent a wonderful evening with Angelus and his family. She
really liked his sister, Faith, who seemed to be a bit shy. Angelus and
William were somewhat protective of her. Buffy envied her that sibling
safety, as she herself was alone. She knew, in some ways, being and only
child was a blessing. She received many presents and a great deal of
attention. Still, she wished from time to time that her mother had been able
to bear more children.

She began to write about how considerate Angelus had been while they
were in the Wainwright stables. He made no comment to remind her of how they
had recently spent a night in a similar place. However, his obnoxious brother
didn't hold back his little sneaky puns here and there.

She thought Willow was going to strangle the fool. Buffy laughed at the
image that came to mind.

Although her eyes were mainly on Angelus she thought she caught a few
glances from William toward Willow. She wondered if he had taken a fancy to
her best friend? Buffy knew that Willow was like her, no hurry for love or
marriage.

She then began to remember a time where marriage seemed like the thing
to do, to want, to wish, and even to plan down to the smallest details. Then,
Reilly had come long and crushed those dreams. All her dreams evaporated when
Reilly told her that he could not marry her.

"I'm sorry Buffy, I can't marry you. I fear I might have led you on, to
believe, that we had a chance. I'm afraid I am already promised to another."
Reilly's head dropped as he confessed to the one woman he would always love.

"What? Promised to whom? That isn't done anymore! That is an old
tradition, left behind in England. You cannot be serious!" Buffy had cried
out with heated anger in her eyes.

"I'm afraid my parents are still a bit old-fashioned; or, at least, they
were before they died. In their will it states I must marry the one they
requested or I lose my inheritance." Reilly explained further.

"So, you are telling me you do not love me?" Buffy felt her heart burst
into a roaring flame.

"I did not say that. I'm trying to explain to you that I must do as my
parents requested. Its the least I can do for them." Reilly replied with a
heart-wrenching plea in his voice for her understanding of his position.

"They are DEAD! For God's sake, Reilly, just say it. You do not love
me, because if you did, you wouldn't give a damn about an inheritance." Buffy
felt the tears starting to slip out of her eyes while her pulse raced.

"That is easy for you to say, Buffy. You have an inheritance already;
plus when you marry, you will benefit from your husband's money as well."
Reilly snapped at her. He couldn't believe how selfish she was acting.

"Tell me you do no love me." Buffy's voice was cold and stern.

"I cannot say those words." Reilly said with a shaky voice.

"Then, you lie to yourself. I hope that the poor girl who gets stuck
with you can stand your lies. I will never, ever speak to you again." Buffy
wiped the fallen tears from her face, turned on her heel and marched away.
She heard him calling for her but refused to turn around; that would let him
see the pain that was on her face.

Buffy could have handled the heartache had it not become common
knowledge that Reilly had dumped her for another. Cordelia Chase had been the
happy newsmonger. She went about telling everyone how the six months Buffy
had spent hanging on Reilly Finn's every word had been wasted. He preferred
money to Buffy.

When Buffy discovered Cordelia had known all along that Reilly was
promised to another, it had been the final blow. It turn out that Anya
Talbot was Reilly's intended bride. Cordelia's very own step-cousin was to
become Reilly's bride and wife.

Buffy felt like such a fool. Everyone knew she had spent many hours with
this young man. Then, there was her own personal shame, she had shared so
many passionate kisses and exchanged caresses with him. She had allowed him
to go further with her than she had allowed any other man.

Of all the suitors that had come to see her, she had chosen the one man
already promised to another. Her father had been furious by Reilly's charade
and made it quite clear that he would hurt professionally for this. Rupert
Summers had informed all his business associates that he would never do
business with the young man. He could not trust him after the way he lead on
his daughter.

Of course, this only stirred up more gossip. It had been so horrifying;
she refused to even leave the house unless absolutely necessary. Luckily,
that was part of her past.

Now she was looking forward to a new start, a new dream. What, exactly,
that dream would be was still unclear. She just knew that no man would ever
tease her heart again. She understood how the world worked and would never
fooled again.

Her mind brought up an image of Angelus showing her his favorite mare.
His smile seemed to brighten up the room. Unlike other men she had been
associated with, Angelus had been kind and protective of Buffy's reputation.

She knew that a man such as he was not interested in marriage, so she
would not let herself be fooled into believing that a possibility between
them. Yet she reminded herself that there were other things they could do
that did not include marriage. She could always use another male friend.

Closing her journal she climbed into her bed and closed her eyes. She
couldn't seem to get the vision of him kissing her hand out of her mind. She
had reacted to his touch with such hunger. A hunger she had never known, even
with Reilly. Maybe she could use Angelus to explore a side of her she had
kept contained. She was tired of playing games by the rules.

She had tried that once and got nothing in return. This time maybe she
could find something that might benefit her. She fell into a deep sleep
filled with dreams of Angelus riding next to her. She smiled the entire night.

Chpt. 14

Angelus had agreed to ride into town with his mother and sister. He knew
their father was too busy to play chaperone the ladies while they shopped. He
knew that his parents did not understand that it was not as necessary in the
Colonies to have a chaperone, unlike the streets of England.

However, he believed a day out of the house might do him some good. Once
they arrived in Liberty, he was started to regret his decision; Angeline and
Faith had him carry everything they purchased. He feared they would have to
sell the house once these two were finished.

"You know mother, that father does own an import business, do you not."
Angelus teased his mother.

"I do. I just want these things now. I do not want to wait for six weeks
just for a new set of curtains. Plus, these people deserve my money just as
much as the merchants in England or Italy." Angeline protested.

Angelus was proud of his mother's efforts in her new country. She had
often told Angelus how she had loathed Ireland and England did not fair too
well in her opinion, either. She was pleased to be a normal, every day
person, rather than the daughter-in-law of a well-known Duke of Ireland.

Faith had rushed off to look at fabric for a new riding outfit.

"Mom, did Father tell you of the news from Uncle Gavin?" Angelus never
kept secrets from his mother, especially when it was news about the Donavon
family.

"I'm afraid he did." Angeline slowed her paced down so she could have a
few minutes of privacy with her son before Faith returned.

"Did he tell you what I suggested?" Angelus asked.

"I must agree with you both. I do not want you to go there. I do not
wish for you to be the next Duke of that backstabbing family. I know,
however, that the people there deserve a better Duke than your Uncle or one
of his sons." Angeline's eyes showed her fears about Angelus leaving them for
his duties as the first-born son of Liam Donovan.

"I will wait until after winter before I depart. I will do as Father
suggested and just listen with my heart and follow my instincts." Angelus
assured her, patting her hand gently.

"I know you will." Angeline blink back unshed tears. Before she could
say more on the topic, Faith came marching back with a happy face.

"So what have you found?" Angelus teased her.

"I found seeds to plant in our garden. I can't wait to start a new
garden." Faith cried out in glee.

"You are one square peg." Angelus gave her a half hug to let her know he
was only playing with her.

As they turn the corner they found themselves face to face with Vanessa
Chase and her daughter, Cordelia.

All three of them felt a sudden dread at the sight of mother and
daughter. It was made pretty clear the night of the party that the Chase's
felt that they were THE family in Liberty. Angeline never cared much for the
upper class, nor did she care much for those who thought they were. Yet, she
put on a polite smile and proceeded to talk to the two women as if she were
thrilled to see them both.

Both Faith and Angelus knew just how hard it was for their mother to
keep up such an act. Yet both were amazed at how well she did it.

Chpt. 15

Buffy was trying to figure out just how she was going to remind Faith
about her offer of riding and picnic without sounding too pushy. She was
going over a dialogue in her head when she heard a rider approaching the
house. She walked around to the front porch.

She saw that she recognized the rider. Her lips twirled up in a smile.
She was happy to see this visitor.

"I thought you had forgotten about us." Buffy grinned.

"I would never forget about you sweetheart." Alexander replied with his
best southern drawl.

"Where did you go after the party?" Alexander thought to ask. He had
searched high and low for her the entire evening, worried that she was
sitting in a remote corner crying over something someone might have said.

"I got a bit tipsy, so I went to bed early." Buffy half lied. She hated
to lie to him but she knew as much as he cared about her he would be furious
to learn she spent the night with a strange man.

"Oh. You poor wilted flower." Alexander playfully touched the tip of her
nose.

"I know." Buffy pouted.

"So, why are you out of doors?" Alexander remembered the last time he
had been there; excluding the party, she rarely stepped out of the house. Now
it seem she had at least jumped that hurdle. Maybe that was a good sign; she
was getting past Reilly after all.

"I was just thinking about how I would ask the neighbors' daughter if
she wanted to go on a ride and picnic tomorrow without sounding to pushy?"
Buffy answered.

"A picnic. That is one of those things where there is good food and a
rich dessert. Then once you are done with that you get on your horse and race
home?" Alexander asked her with a twinkle in his eyes.

"Yes!" Buffy giggled. She had always adored his playful attitude.

"How about I come along with you. I mean two women alone in the woods
with food need a manly chaperone." Alexander offered.

"Are you interested in the food, the race, or the company?" Buffy teased
him.

"Why, yes!" Alexander answered with a serious smile.

"OH!" Buffy hit his shoulder.

"What?" Alexander played ignorant.

Then, when he heard the old Buffy, the one he knew and had fallen in
love with, start laughing, he too found himself laughing.

"It sounds fair to me." Buffy agreed she took hold of his arm and led
him into the house so they could discuss his trips. She couldn't wait to
catch up with him.

******************************************************************************
Faith heard the Butler looking for her as she entered the kitchen area. She
began to walk through the house to find Mr. Peacock. She was glad her parents
had agreed to bring him to the colonies. He was a wonderful man. He was a
few years older than her father. Yet if you were to look at him you would
think he was several years younger. He was a vain man. She enjoyed teasing
him about his looks.

"Mr. Peacock." Faith called to him when she finally spotted him going up
the second floor stairs.

"Oh there you are, Miss Faith." Mr. Peacock called down to her.

They met midway. He handed her several envelopes.

"These came for you." Mr. Peacock was sure they were invitations to
several gatherings.

"Thank you." Faith frowned when she saw the amount of envelopes she had
received.

"You are most welcome." Mr. Peacock said in his usual stuff voice and
walked back down the stairs.

Faith felt like weeping. Why did these people want her to attend these
social events? Why did they want a girl like her at such fancy gatherings?
Then she thought of her older brothers. Of course, they want to get close to
her to try and win over her brothers.

Faith went to her room and threw them down on her bed, then flung
herself across them as she began to weep.

A few minutes later, Angelus stopped a few feet from her door way. He
saw that her door had been left open and could hear her crying.

He nearly ran to see what could be wrong with her.

"Faith!" Angelus cried out as he entered the room with a fast dash.

Faith nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound of his voice.

"What?" Faith sat up wiping the loose tears away from her face.

"What is wrong with you?" Angelus walked to her bedside and sat next to
her.

It was then that he saw all the envelopes lying underneath her.

"Is this about these?" Angelus picked one up and lifted it in front of
her face.

"Yes… you could say that." Faith sniffed.

"Why?" Angelus frowned at her.

"Because, Angelus...they do not like me; they never do. I'm just a tool
for them to get closer to you and William. I'm not a fool anymore. None of
them want my friendship for its own sake. I hate them all!" Faith began to
tear one she picked randomly. She looked like a mad woman.

"Hold on." Angelus grabbed her hands firmly between his.

"Do not try to talk me out of it." Faith warned him with sad eyes.

"Look, I agree that you have been used in some horrid plans by a few
women. But not all of these women are the same. Trust me when I say there are
a few good women out there. I mean you and Mother can't be the last two."
Angelus tipped her chin up so he could look into her dark brown eyes.

"Look, here is one from Annie Browning, it says she is inviting you to
tea. Then there is the one from the preacher's wife. Why would she want
William and me? Oh, and here is one from.... Buffy." Angelus felt his tongue
go numb just from her name rolling off of his tongue.

"What about her?" Faith asked with a curious stare into his own eyes.

"She seems genuinely nice, she and the red-headed friend of hers. I feel
that those two might be the right kind of girls for you to associate with. I
know when you met Cordelia this afternoon she reminded you of the girls at
school. Buffy and Willow are not like her or the others." Angelus hoped he
was persuading her enough to listen to him.

"Do you like her or something?" Faith blinked her eyes.

"I do like her. I think she appeared very nice and gracious. I think she
might... no, I'm sure she will be a good friend to you." Angelus challenged
her.

"I meant are you interested in her?" Faith licked her dry lips as she
watched her brother take a few seconds to process her question before
answering.

"How would I know that from one brief meeting?" Angelus retorted.

"True." Faith agreed but something far off in her head screamed that he
did like Buffy, first meeting or not.

"So, lets see, she wants to know if you are still interested in a
picnic. See that is a private setting. She does not mention anything about
asking me, or William for that matter. See, this is her chance to get to
know you." Angelus was relieved that he had proved his point.

"I will write her, at once, to let her know I accept; but, I want you to
come along too. I mean, just in case I get too nervous." Faith lied. She
wanted to test her elder brothers feelings for this girl.

She heard that her brother presence had been requested in Ireland. It
had just occurred to her that if he married a local girl, who might not want
to move to a foreign land, the couple might say in America, near her. Maybe
she could find him a wife who would persuade him to give up the dukedom to
stay close to his family.

She smiled wickedly, once he agreed. He left a few minutes later and
she quickly wrote an acceptance letter to be taken, at once, to the Summers.
There was no time to waste.

Chpt. 16

Buffy, Alexander, and Willow were waiting for Faith, who they expected to
come alone. They were disappointed. Instead, they watched as Faith and
Angelus rode alongside one another.

"Who in the dickens is that?" Alexander asked with suspicions eyes.

"That's Faith's elder brother, Angelus Donavon." Buffy said. She hoped
her voice didn't reveal how sexy she thought he looked on his horse. She
found herself daydreaming of him riding up to her and lifting her up in front
of him. Then, she would tilt her head to the side so he could place a long,
steamy kiss on her lips.

Willow snapped her fingers a few times in front of the dreamy far-off
face of Buffy.

"Hello?" Willow rolled her eyes.

"Oh? What?" Buffy blinked a few times before coming back to reality.

"It appears that Angelus will be riding with us today, as well." Willow
informed her. While Buffy had been drifting off in her dream world, Alexander
departed to introduce himself to the newcomers and discovered he liked him as
Angelus felt it important that the women had a chaperone.

"Oh." Buffy felt her mouth drying up as though she had eaten cotton
balls for breakfast.

"Are you going to be okay?" Willow asked her with great concern in her
eyes.

"Of course. Its no big deal." Buffy began to babble but as soon as her
foot landed on the next step of the porch she found herself losing her
balance. She cried out as she felt herself tumbling toward the next stair.
Closing her eyes tightly so she wouldn't see the ground, she found herself in
a pair of strong arms.

"What happen?" Buffy peeped one eye open then the other. She looked
beneath her and saw that she was indeed being held in someone's arms.

"I fear you lost your balance." Angelus explained, as his face appeared
as white as a ghost.

"Buffy, are you alright?" Angelus asked with sincere concern in his
voice.

"Yeah... I'm just a clumsy fool." Buffy bit down on her lower lip,
unwilling to let him see how terribly embarrassed she was.

"I think not. I believe the marble some poor child lost was the cause of
your fall." Alexander showed them the dark blue marble that had caused Buffy
to lose her balance.

"Well, then; I'm not a clumsy fool. But I am clumsy. I warn you now."
Buffy looked into soft brown eyes and felt as if she would faint, she then
reminded herself that it would be safe to do so at the moment. At least, she
was already in his arms.

"I will heed your warning." Angelus replied while he stared into the
softest green eyes he had ever seen. They remind him of a pasture he played
in while staying in Ireland. Playing in that pasture was a sweet memory of
much fun. He wondered if she would be as much fun?

"Are you sure it would be safe to go on a picnic on a day like this?"
Faith looked up at the cloudy sky above them.

"The weather here is moody. Besides, a little rain can't hurt us."
Alexander teased the young female. Alexander then looked back at the older
brother of the beautiful young lady and wondered if the man realized he was
still holding Buffy in his arms?

"Mmm. are you going to carry her to the picnic?" Willow saw the frown on
the faces of Faith and Alexander as they looked at the couple.

"No. No." Angelus nearly dropped her as he swiftly put Buffy back on her
own two feet.

"Thank you." Buffy said with a hard gulp before tearing her eyes away
and racing to her horse.

"Let's go. I'm starving?" Alexander playfully whined as if they were
children once again.

"Yes, lets. I think we might beat the storm today." Willow replied. She
caught sight of Buffy and Angelus purposely riding next to one another. She
wondered if either of them were aware of the way the other snuck little
stares at the other? It did not take too long before they found the perfect
spot to stop and eat.

During the small talk, they discovered that Faith was really not as shy
as she appeared. She was just a bit insecure with her appearance and status.
They also learned how much of the world the Wainwrights had seen. It was
clear they were true cosmopolitans. Even though they were obviously extremely
wealthy, they did not carry themselves in a superior manner. Willow thought
of the Chase family and wished for them to take a few lessons from the
Wainwrights.

The group had just finished packing up and preparing to leave when the
sky opened and thunder roared across the field. It was clear they would be
thoroughly wet before arriving home. At once Willow, Faith, and Alexander
were riding in the direction of the Summers' house. Buffy had just mounted
her horse and gave her a soft kick when lighting hit a few feet away and
caused her horse to rear back and set out at a gallop. She fought for
control, but it was no use. Buffy thought she saw Angelus ahead of her but
wasn't sure. Just as she cried out his name she felt herself being thrown
into the air and landing on her backside with a loud thud.

The rain began to splash across her face. She struggled to breathe. Her
head pounded unmercifully while the thunder grew louder. It was the last
sound she heard before she closed her eyes and prayed that someone found her
before she drowned in the rain.

Chpt. 17

Angelus saw the others were already halfway to the Summers home when he
realized that one of the riders was missing? He knew that Buffy's horse was
fast but she couldn't have made it past the others. He looked behind him and
saw no rider there either. The wind, rain and ever-darkening sky it made it
almost impossible to see.

He had heard the lighting hit something not to far behind him. He felt a
chill go up and down his spine and sensed that something was wrong. Turning
his horse, without a worry about himself, he raced back to where they had
enjoyed what had been a rather nice lunch.

Just as he crested the hill, he saw Buffy's horse jumping and kicking about
in a frenzy. His heart began to pound. Where was Buffy? Something screamed in
his head that she was hurt.

"Buffy!" He cried. He knew if she was hurt she probably couldn't hear
him above the constant roaring of the thunder.

He rode further on until he saw her. She was lying motionless in the
mud. He knew instantly she had been thrown from her horse. Jumping down, he
ran to her. Falling to his knees, he lifted her head and placed it his lap
as he checked her for broken bones. He could not see anything wrong with her.
He leant his head down closer to her mouth to check her breathing.

"Come on, sweetheart breath for me." He had known people to lose their
breath from hitting the ground hard. He prayed that this was the same case.

"Ow..." She whimpered.

At least, he knew she was alive. Picking her up for the second time that
day, he carried Buffy to an area somewhat sheltered from the wind and rain.

"Buffy! Buffy! Sweetheart … can you hear me?" Angelus cried as he pushed
back the wet hair that was half covering her face.

"It ...hurts...." Buffy tried to force the words out of her mouth but
lacked the necessary strength before the darkness engulfed her again.

"What hurts, darling.... tell me, Buffy. I need to know. Honey, please
try to stay awake. Come on." Angelus wiped a blotch of mud from her face as
he leaned closer to hear her.

"Chest.... it.... hurts...." She began to cry, tears streaming down her
face. Although she had not opened her eyes, he knew that she was struggling
to stay calm.

"It's okay. You probably just had the breath knocked out of you. We
need to find shelter, and fast. This storm is not letting up. Where can we
go?" Angelus began to frantically scan the area. He forced his mind to
remember what he saw as they rode to this area. Was there anything that that
could be used as temporary shelter?

"Think man!" Angelus said out loud to himself.

It came to him like a bolt of lightning. He had seen an abandon slave
cabin not far away. He remembered because he had asked Alexander what it was
and he had explained that the Lancasters and Summers allowed their servants
to build their own homes with in the boundaries of their lands.

Lifting Buffy, he grabbed the reins of his horse. Putting her on first,
he then mounted behind, holding her tightly against him as he prayed that he
would be able to find that cabin. He was finding it difficult to see in the
driving rain. He had never experience such a ferocious storm. Mother nature
was giving them one hell of time today he thought to himself.

"I'm going to find us some cover." Angelus whispered in Buffy's ear as
he tried to keep his horse steady and calm while he searched for the cabin.

He hoped the others made it safely to the house. He also hoped they were
smart enough to stay inside until the storm was over rather than beginning an
immediate search. The storm was going to cause horrible damage before it let
up. He just hoped it would end soon.

At last, he caught sight of the cabin. He halted the horse in front of
the cabin and quickly took Buffy inside and laid her down on the floor as
gently as possible. Remembering his horse, he went back outside and lead the
animal to the side of the cabin most sheltered from the wind. After tying
his beloved horse there, he ran back to the house where he began to start a
fire.

It took only a few minutes before he had not only heat but light as well
in the dark dank cabin. He looked around and saw the cabin had been
abandoned only recently. He saw a bed beside the wall and moved it closer to
the fire. He figured that this was for the children because he saw a door
that he was certain led to the room where the husband and wife slept.
Putting her on the bed, he glanced at the wet clinging blouse clearly
outlining her well-rounded bosom. Eventually, he realized that she was
breathing better than before. He just hoped she would awaken soon.

He knew the fall could have knocked the breath from her, but he wasn't
sure how hard she had hit her head. It was easy for one to get a serious,
possibly fatal, concussion from being thrown. He noticed that her body was
twitching as if she were cold. Testing her forehead for fever, he feared she
might catch a cold from lying in the rain.

He wasn't sure what to do next. He tried to remember what his mother had
done when he and William had been found after being lost in a storm when they
were young lads. She had made them get undressed at once and put warm
blankets around them. Should he do the same to her? Could he?

"This would be so much easier were you awake." Angelus moaned as he
debated on the best course of action.

"I'm so cold." Buffy mumbled as her teeth began to chatter.

"Buffy can you hear me?" Angelus nearly jumped at hearing her voice.

"Yes." Buffy forced her eyes to open slightly.

"Darling, we need to get your wet clothes off." Angelus said in a
soothing tone.

"I can't." Buffy shook her head from side to side.

"We have to or you'll catch your death of cold." Angelus pleaded with
her.

"I can't. I'm...too...weak." Buffy started to feel herself growing more
alert.

"Does your head hurt?" Angelus saw that she was starting to wake up.

"Yes.... terribly." Buffy reached around and felt a goose egg knot on
her head.

"Look... we need to get you warm and keep you awake." Angelus saw the
large lump on her head once she removed her hand.

"How? I don't have any clothes. I'm tired. Let me sleep." Buffy stretch
her legs out and winced when she felt the sharp pain pierce her ankle.

"What? Did you break something too?" Angelus asked.

"Ankle hurts." Buffy replied.

Angelus' hands went straight to her ankles. He saw that her left ankle
was a bit swollen but it didn't appear to be broken.

"Looks like you might have sprained it." Angelus informed her.

"It's so cold." Buffy tried to roll up in a ball to warm herself.

"Buffy, we need to dry our clothes. I need you to help me undress you."
Angelus told her again. He expected her to start protesting at the thought of
disrobing with him but was shocked when she agreed easily.

"Okay. But you have to help me." Buffy pleaded as her fingers went to
the buttons on her blouse.

Angelus thought for a moment that perhaps he was the one with a
concussion who had passed out in the rain. How was it possible? Here he is
in a cabin with Buffy, who was agreeing to undress while outside a raging
storm caused havoc? His gut told him that this was not going to end well for
either of them.

Chpt. 18

Angelus watched as she fumbled with the pearl buttons of her blouse. He
noticed that her face was growing pale. Staring at down her hands, he saw
they too seemed to be growing awfully white as well. Angelus reached out to
touch her forehead with the back of his hand; she was indeed growing warmer,
he told himself.

Without debating further, he pushed her fumbling hands away and began to
undress her. Once he had the blouse off, he dropped it to the floor. He saw
that she wore the usual undergarments. Next, he reached around behind her and
began to unbutton her skirt. Once it was off, he saw that she had only her
slip covering her.

She lay there unmoving. It was then that he took a moment and looked her
over from head to toe. She was beautiful. He noted the natural glow of her
skin. Then his eyes fell to her breasts. They were the perfect hand size. He
knew the cool air was causing her nipples to harden.

Licking his lips, he forced himself to take a deep breath then began a
search for extra blankets to put on her while he placed her clothes, along
with his own, on a make-shift clothes line along. He knew that in order to
bring her temperature back to normal and to provide her with enough heat, he
too would have to be practically naked.

Once accomplished, he climbed over her and lay with his chest cradling
her back. He tried not to think of how erotic this moment could be if she
were not unconscious.

"Why are you always oblivious when we have these moments?" He whispered
in her ear with a soft chuckle.

This was the second time that he had been completely alone with this
young lady. He wondered if there was any hope for them at all? Then he asked
himself why would he consider the question of hope to begin with? He was
leaving after the winter season. Sure, he did not know whether he would
return here to make his future home or not, but why take the chance of
getting close to someone one might have to leave behind? It was not a smart
move.

He heard the storm raging outside the thin walls and prayed they would not be
blown away. Or even worse, the two of them were not found this way. He had
been saved by the grace of God, once before when it came to this girl. Could
his luck hold?

He heard her moan and complain she of the cold. Instinctually, he
wrapped his arms around her, pulling her as close as possible to him.

Buffy instantly felt the heat, sighing with contentment. She wanted to
sleep forever in this state; but luckily, Angelus remembered that she might
have a concussion.

"Buffy, you need to wake up. We need to make sure you can wake up."
Angelus told her.

Buffy heard his voice, but her body didn't want to respond to the
demand. It wanted, no needed, rest.

"NO." Buffy cried out as she cupped her hands under her cheeks.

"Buffy, I have to keep you awake." Angelus began to think of ways he
could keep her awake for at least another hour. As they were naked and lying
together, only one answer kept coming to mind.

He felt his loins tighten at the prospect of making love to her now.
Then felt like kicking himself for even considering such a deed while she was
obviously so ill.

"Come on... please wake up...." Angelus pleaded as his lips brushed up
against her ear.

"Mmm.... nice." Buffy replied to his accidental touch.

Angelus wondered if she were faking? Was it possible that she wanted to
be with him but feared being called a scarlet woman? No, she was too much of
a lady for that sort of thing. Rather, it must be the shock of the fall and
the fever causing her to wiggle her small, round, firm buttocks against his
loins. He was afraid he would lose this game if he remained a moment longer
in this bed, yet he did not move.

Chpt. 19

"If you don't stop moving like that I won't be able to control myself,"
Angelus grunted as fought to control his hunger for this tasty little morsel.

"What am I doing?" Buffy ask as she began to awaken at the sound of his
voice so close to her ears.

"Your...well... you're grinding up against me." Angelus replied with a
strain voice.

"I cannot help it." Buffy moaned as she felt his smooth flat chest up
against her back. Heat seemed to radiate from his body and she could not get
close enough to it.

"Buffy, darling." Angelus pleaded with her to stop the torture.

Buffy rolled over to face him. Instead of really looking at her source
of heat, she seemed to snuggle up into his neck while wrapping her arms
around his waist drawing him closer to her. She sighed as the heat she was
looking for warmed her.

"Yes." Buffy moaned into his neck.

Angelus' eyes rolled in his head as he felt her legs wrapping around his
own. He was sure that no man could resist such a temptation as was being
placed before him at the moment.

"You smell...so...manly." Buffy murmured as she began to sniff at him as
if she was a dog.

"I think the fever is scrambling your brain." Angelus sighed as her
hands began to glide up and down his naked backside.

Buffy didn't reply she just pulled him closer. He choked as he felt her
thinly covered breasts rub up against his own bare chest.

"Are you awake?" Angelus asked with a high pitch voice.

"Yes...I think so...if not this is a heavenly dream." Buffy whispered as
her lips grazed his neck.

Buffy felt her body starting to burn and not just from his body heat.
Something inside her was craving his body. She opened her eyes to see she was
face to face with his throat. She was not sure why but she opened her mouth
and, licking her dry lips, she slipped her tongue out to touch his warm
flesh. It scorched her tongue, but it was worth the taste of his salty skin.

"Buffy!" Angelus nearly jumped off the bed from her touch. He looked
down at the girl who had just licked his throat.

"What are you doing?" Angelus pleaded with her.

"I do not know. I'm sorry." Buffy's hands removed themselves from his
back and then she put them on his chest as she began to slide them up and
down. She stared at it as if it was a fine piece of art.

"You do realize that you are driving me to distraction." Angelus asked
her with a husky voice.

"How?" Buffy ask with such innocent eyes that Angelus wondered once
again if he were dreaming this whole scenario.

"Buffy, we are naked. We are alone. You are rubbing up and down next to
me. I'm trying not to do anything we would both later regret." Angelus
explained to her in a sincere voice.

"I do not think I would regret this. Will you kiss me?" Buffy ask with
passionate eyes.

"WHAT!" Angelus pushed her a few inches away so he could get a better
look at her. He feared the bump on her head was causing this strange behavior
from such an innocent young lady.

"I'm not ill. I'm a woman who has needs. I cannot seem to forget you
since our first encounter. I need to know what it is a man wants from a
woman. Can you teach me?" Buffy asked with such a fierce need in her voice
and eyes that Angelus knew he was not going to be able to stop either of them
once they got started.

"I cannot do that. I'm sorry, Buffy." Angelus looked down at the blanket
covering them. He feared that if he saw the hurt in her eyes he would surely
break down and do things to her that she might enjoy at the moment but later
would hate him for.

"Damn you! Damn all your kind!" Buffy growled as her fists began to beat
at his bare chest with hard angry thuds.

"Stop. Stop." Angelus grabbed her hands together as he looked down into
a pair of tearful eyes. Tears began to stream down her face as she looked at
him as if he were someone else. He feared she was delirious.

"I hate you Reilly! It's so like you to play these kinds of games with
me. One minute you are pleading for another kiss and then the next to say we
must think of what others might think. Then...Oh yed, I didn't forget about
your talk of love to me. But you don't want to marry me! The damn money was
worth more than me. I hate you." Buffy began to scream like a mad woman.

Angelus realized she was revealing a very hurtful moment in her past. He
was starting to understand why she was so cynical. Someone named Reilly had
used her then, due to some inheritance or perhaps a payoff from her father,
denied her marriage.

"Buffy, darling; it's me, Angelus. Look at me!" Angelus took his free
hand and turned her face to look at him closer.

"Angelus." Buffy's face seem to calm down as she began to recognize who
was holding her.

"It's me, sweetheart." Angelus replied in a soothing tone.

"Why does no one want me?" Buffy ask with such a pitiful expression that
Angelus felt his heartstrings shredding to pieces.

"Am I so ugly. Is that's why you won't kiss me." Buffy stated wondering
why he did not want to share an intimate moment with her.

"NO! You are one of the most beautiful women I have ever met. I'm afraid
that once I kiss you, I won't be able to myself from going further." Angelus
explained.

"I can stop you." Buffy suggested. "Please, just kiss me. I need to
know if you truly desire me." Buffy said with hopeful eyes.

"Just one." Angelus warned her. He couldn't hurt her by refusing her
again. He would rather take the chance of going too far than seeing her cry
again.

Leaning over her still form, he released her hands. He noticed that she
had begun to breath harder the closer he got to her.

Both licked their lips, seconds away to sharing their first kiss.
Angelus watched as her eyes closed just as they made contact. Her lips were
hot from the fever but still as soft as roses. Sliding his tongue across her
closed lips, he waited until she allowed him to enter her mouth. Her lips
move apart and her mouth opened, welcoming his invasion.

His hands reached up to the side of her face, then he began to run his
fingers through her hair. Buffy felt the entire room go up in flames. Her
free hands returned to his backside as she began to touch him everywhere
possible. Both began to moan as his pelvis ground against her. She pushed up
her hips to make contact to his body.

The kiss seemed never-ending and neither wanted it to end. Hands began
to touch, slide, and caress each other's bodies as they continued to kiss,
stopping only long enough to take a quick breath.

They were both so wrapped up with the passion their bodies were feeling
and exploring that neither of them had noticed the storm had died down
outside or the fact that someone stood in the door way watching the scene.

Chpt. 20

Faith sat next to Willow while they waited for Angelus and Buffy to
return, both greatly concerned about their safety.

"I'm afraid that is the worst storm I have seen in some while." Willow
said as she picked up the cup of warm tea and began to sip.

"I usually love the rain, but I have to admit this particular storm has
me shaken up. Perhaps it is the fact that my brother is out in it. I hope he
and Buffy are alright." Faith said as she stared into the flames of the fire.

"I'm sure they are." Willow's eyes turn to the fire as well.

"I had a feeling the two of you would still be here." Joyce Summers
walked into the room carrying a tray of fresh sandwiches.

"I thought you might be hungry." Joyce explained as she set the tray in
front of them.

"Thank you, Mrs. Summers." Faith replied politely.

"Come on girls, you know as well as I do they are perfectly safe. Eat
before you catch a cold." Joyce tried to stay as calm as she hoped she
appeared to the young girls, but inside she was worried.

"She has a point." Willow agreed with Joyce as she picked up a small
sandwich and began to nibble on it. Faith mimicked her.

"Who did you say went to find them?" Willow looked up at Joyce.

"Rupert, Alexander, a few of the servant men... oh and Faith's brother
showed to check on her safety. When he heard Angelus and Buffy were missing,
he joined the search party." Joyce gave her an apologetic smile.

She had almost forgot about William Wainwright showing up at the very
last minute. She was grateful there were plenty of people to search for the
lost couple. She knew in her heart that Buffy was safe; mothers' instinct
she supposed.

"I'm glad Buffy's dress fit you." Joyce mention as she saw how close the
two girls were in the same size.

"Thank you again for loaning me this while my clothes dry. I must admit
I would be freezing were I still wearing my soaked dress." Faith smiled at
her hostess.

"You are quite welcome. Willow stop chewing your nails." Joyce softly
scolded the young girl. She knew Willow always chewed her nails whenever she
was nervous.

"I'm sorry." Willow chuckled. She could always count on Joyce to treat
her as only a mother could.

******************************************************************************

Rupert Summers decided to have everyone go separate ways to find the
missing couple. He felt, after meeting Angelus, the boy was smart enough to
get them out of the danger of the storm. But he also reminded himself that
either or both of them could be hurt as well. He looked at the small group of
men and felt confident they would find his little girl and bring her home
safe and sound.

William rode in the direction from which he had come to the Summers'
house; he remembered seeing what looked like a cabin behind a grove of trees.
When he arrived, he saw smoke coming from the chimney. He tapped on the door
and, when no answer came, he opened the door only to see his brother naked
and atop the young Summers' girl.

His first reaction was to start laughing at catching his brother in such
a predicament, but he knew the girl's father was not too far behind him. If
caught, his brother would be either married or hung before sunset.

"Bloody hell!" William shook his head with disbelief.

Buffy had not heard a thing, but Angelus had. Breaking their kiss, he
looked up to see his brother staring at him with a set of eyes that spoke
volumes.

"William." Angelus choked as he instinctively pulled the blanket over
Buffy.

"Yes, it is I, your dear brother; and I would suggest you two get
dressed and quickly. There is a group of men is searching not too far behind
me. I believe one of their number is HER father." William warned as he turned
his back to allow them to dress.

"OH, SHIT!" Angelus swore.

Buffy's face burned with shame. They had been caught in such an intimate
moment. According to William, she had been lucky it had not been her father
who had found them.

"I'm so sorry, Angelus." Buffy cried out as she fought to sit up.

Angelus jumped over her without a care to her viewing his naked form. He
began to grab his clothes and handed Buffy's to her. Both began to scramble
into their clothes.

Angelus was the first to finish dressing. He then turned to see if she
was ready and saw that she was shaking and a bit disoriented as she fought
with the buttons once again.

"Here, let me help you." Angelus flew to her side as he began to button
them as if he had been doing it all his life.

"I feel...funny." Buffy spoke softly. She did not know if William could
hear them or not.

"I'm sure it is from that horrible bump on your head." Angelus reminded
her of the wound.

"No. I mean yes, that does hurt; but I mean the rest of my body feels
tingling." Buffy placed her hands over his and force him to look at her in
the eyes.

"It is called passion, darling." Angelus explained.

Angelus noticed her lips were still swollen from their earlier kisses.
He knew what he was about to do was pushing their luck, but, grabbing her
head between his hands, he gave her one more kiss on the mouth before
releasing her.

"I hope you are not mad at me." Angelus look at her for a hint to how
she might be feeling about what had occurred between them.

"I could never be mad at you." Buffy vowed to him.

"Here they are." William came back inside and saw the way the couple was
staring into the others eyes. He feared the young lady would be the death of
his brother.

"Here, William, help me. She has a big bump on her head and a sprained
ankle." Angelus explained to William as they both helped Buffy out of the
cabin.

"You found them." Rupert called out with relief as he saw William
walking out with his brother and Buffy.

"Good heavens, what happened?" Rupert and Alexander both swung down and
flew to her side.

"My horse threw me and, luckily for me, Angelus saw me and came back. I
fear it knocked the breath out of me and gave me a goose egg on my head along
with a sprained ankle." Buffy explained to her father.

"Lucky for you that Angelus found shelter. We saw several homes with
roofs blown completely off." Rupert informed them as he took his daughter
from the two young men and lifted her up to place her on his horse.

"I'm just glad we survived." Angelus said. His eyes locked with Buffy
and both knew the true meaning of his statement

"Me too." Alexander spoke up at this point. He had a strange feeling
that something happened between the two in the cabin, something did not
intend to share with the group.

"Where is Faith?" Angelus turned to Alexander for an answer.

"She is at the house awaiting your safe return." Alexander answered.

"Let us retrieve our sister." Angelus left to get his horse. By the time
he returned, the others had already left.

"I had them go on without us. Care to tell me what your were doing in
there?" William asked, disappointment clear in his voice.

"If you do not know, dear brother; then you have much to learn." Angelus
teased him.

"You know what I mean." William did not even crack a smile.

"I feared she had a fever and I tried to help her break it. She became
rather delirious and, I'm sorry to say, I was weak for a moment. We went no
further than kissing. Don't fret so, I did not steal her innocence." Angelus
sat on his horse.

"I know you would never do anything to cause shame to her or her family.
I just fear that this girl isn't good for you. This is the second time I
have saved you from being forced into a unwanted marriage." William pointed
out Buffy and Angelus' history and his part in it.

"I thank you, brother. You have been very understanding and loyal. I
hope to repay you." Angelus reached over and patted his brother on the
shoulder.

"Oh, trust me, you will. Someday, dear brother, you WILL help me."
William warned him with a twinkle in his eye, as they rode to the Summers'
house.

Chpt. 21

Buffy felt gloomy and bored. The family physician had assured her parents
that she would be fine as long as she stayed in bed for a few weeks and
rested. On top of her sore head and sprained ankle, she had caught a cold.
Yet now she was feeling quite herself except the still bruised ankle.

"When will I be released?" Buffy cried out in agony toward Willow who
sat in front of the fire reading a new novel.

"Huh? Oh, Doctor Matthews said you should be able to get up and about in
a few more days. He just doesn't want to risk worsening your ankle injury."
Willow informed her as she kept her eyes glued to the pages in the book.

"I hate this." Buffy sat down in front of her windows. Looking out of
the view she wondered what Angelus was doing? She didn't want to tell Willow
how disappointed she had been when only Faith and her mother had visited her.
She had hoped that Angelus himself would come as well.

"I know." Willow sighed.

"Have you heard anything?" Buffy look at her friend with hope of news
that might let her know what he had been doing.

"When I went to the market yesterday I ran into Cordelia's maid, Myra,
she mention that Mrs. Chase has hopes for marrying Cordelia off soon. You
could tell the entire household was joyous with that thought. I heard she is
awful to her servants." Willow explained as she sat the book in her lap.

"What does that have to do with Angelus?" Buffy felt her stomach
clenching at the thought of him proposing to the likes of Cordelia Chase.

"Nothing, I guess; except that Mrs. Chase has been visiting the
Wainwrights as well as attending every party they do. That they have been
attending parties thrown by some of the less wealthy families indicates just
how much she wishes to remain front and center of the Wainwrights. You know
how Mrs. Chase only attends the elite parties." Willow pushed a loose piece
of hair from her face as she talked.

"This is not good." Buffy began to feel sick to her stomach. She knew
Mrs. Chase well enough to know that she would want her daughter to marry into
only the wealthiest family and right now that family was named Wainwright.

"Buffy, I must ask you something." Willow chewed on her lips nervously.

"Go on." Buffy sensed that Willow was about to ask something rather
personal.

"I know you are quite taken with Mr. Donavon and I was wondering...
well, Buffy you have been alone with Angelus twice. I was just curious
whether anything happen between you two that might make you believe he could
care for you?" Willow stumbled with her words. She didn't want to accuse her
best friend of being a scarlet woman but knew all too well how easily one
could get caught up in the moment.

"I must confess, Willow." Buffy looked at her friend with sincere eyes.

"I ... well, we... kissed the second time. We did nothing in the barn
that night. He was a complete gentleman. But with my fall and wet clothes we
disrobed to prevent becoming ill. In that time, I may have asked him to kiss
me. Actually, I nearly had to get on my knees to beg him to kiss me. It was
horrible the way that I pleaded, but it was so worth it. He was so... oh so
much more than I had ever experienced with Reilly. I'm afraid I'm falling for
him." Buffy looked at her with guilt filled eyes.

"Did you sleep with him?" Willow cried out.

"NO! He would not dare do anything that could cause me shame. He is very
much in controlled of himself. I hate to say this, but I wished that he had
been a scoundrel. I wanted him so badly; I ached for his touch." Buffy
explained.

Willow noticed the way her eyes seem to shine as she spoke about her
intimacy with Angelus.

"So, are you considering trying to pursue him for marriage?" Willow
stood up.

"I do not know. I do not even know if he feels anything for me. I can
tell you that I am truly infatuated with this man. He is everything that I
could want in a mate." Buffy offered.

"I want you to know that I only want you to be happy." Willow stepped in
front of Buffy as she looked down at her with warm eyes.

"I know you do. I also want the same for you, Willow." Buffy smiled.

"I'm afraid I am a lost cause. I cannot see myself ever allowing a man
to control me as my father does my mother." Willow replied with a frown.

"Why do you think your father controls your mother?" she asked softly.

"Why else would my mother desert me so often over the years? She chose
her husband, my father, over spending time with me. So often I would watch
them together and the way they looked at one another. It was as if there was
no room in their lives for me. I often felt like a burden to them." Willow
answered with tears in her eyes.

"That cannot be so. Your parents are gypsies at heart. They love to
search the world for answers to important questions. I believe they think you
too independent to want to follow them around the world. If I were to guess,
I would say that they know how much you hate to go from place to place. So
they allow you to stay behind." Buffy hoped her advised held some truth in it.

"Perhaps you are right." Willow replied as she sat down next to Buffy
and looked out at the view.

"All I know for sure is that you are always family to us." Buffy patted
her hands.

"I am lucky to have you." Willow gave her a weak smile.

"What are you going to do about winning Angelus?" Willow remembered
their earlier conversation.

"I fear I have no plan. I want it to happen naturally or not at all."
Buffy confessed.

Willow agreed with her that love should come easy and not plotted out to
the smallest detail. It was the one thing that bonded them together. They
hated the way the world played games. Love was supposed to happen not be
manipulated.

Both heads turn at the sound of an approaching rider. Buffy's heart
began to soar when she saw that one of the riders was Angelus himself.

Chapter 22

Faith had noticed immediately that her brother was acting strange. She also
saw the way that Buffy appeared disappointed that it had only been she and
her mother who arrived to visit with them. She was not, in the least, fooled
about those two. They are mad about one another. Whenever she mentioned the
girl's name around Angelus, a dreamy expression would appear on his face.

When Faith asked if he had been by to see how Buffy was doing he had given
her a gloomy look. She knew that he was trying to keep his distance from
Buffy. She was not sure why and wondered if something had been said between
them that caused Angelus to lose interest in Buffy.

"I'm glad you came with me. I know that it will brighten her day to see that
you are well. She was quite concerned that you might be ill as well." Faith
had lied to make him feel guilty for not coming sooner.

"I will assure her that I'm in the best health possible. Once I've seen her,
I must locate her father. He wanted to show me 'round his stables the next
time I visited. I do not want to insult the man." Angelus allowed her to know
right away that he would be leaving swiftly once he saw Buffy.

"Very well." Faith replied with a sweet smile.

The butler allowed them in, showed them to the parlor then left to inform
Buffy she had guest.

In minutes, Willow was helping Buffy down the stairs. Faith repressed a
giggle when she saw how delighted Buffy was to see Angelus, knowing she had
been right all along about the two.

"Are you okay?" Angelus flew out of the chair and across the room to
assist Willow getting Buffy to a seat. He noticed her bandaged foot as well
as the slight limp.

"I'm fine. The doctor wanted to keep this infernal thing on for a few
more days." Buffy whined.

"I see she makes a lousy patient." Angelus chuckled as he helped her sit
down.

"Horrible." Willow exclaimed with her own chuckle.

"I hate being kept in the house for weeks. I tell you its unbearable."
Buffy sighed as she fixed her skirt to cover her ankles.

"I can understand that. Once I was ill and forced to my room for nearly
a month." Faith informed her.

"Are you well, other than your ankle?" Angelus looked at the top of her
head.

"Yes, the enormous bump is gone." Buffy laughed as she touched the spot
on her head so recently swollen.

"I'm glad you are fairing well." Angelus said as his eyes met hers. He
felt a sudden electrical force between them. He wanted to kneel before her
and examine her for proof of her good health. However he restrained himself.

"I see you finally made it over for a visit." Rupert Giles walked into
the room.

Buffy and Angelus shared a quick glance of panic between them before
focusing their attention on her father.

"Yes, I'm afraid I was too busy helping my father settle his new
business to get here sooner." Angelus apologized as he reached out to shake
Mr. Summers' already extended hand.

"Quite all right. I know too well how much time business takes from us."
Rupert replied with a gentle smile.

"If you ladies do not mind, I'm stealing Angelus for a bit." Rupert
explained as he and Angelus left the women alone.

"What is my father doing?" Buffy began to panic and her face showed it.

"He wanted to discuss some matter about horses, I believe." Faith
explained. She caught the terror in the young girl's eyes at the thought of
her father speaking alone with Angelus.

"Oh. Of course." Buffy said with relief.

"How have you been doing? I'm so sorry I cannot show you about as I had
hoped." Buffy turned her attention to Faith.

Faith was astonished at how sincere she truly sounded. She realized
Buffy did not see her as an extension of her brother, thus pleasing Faith
immensely.

"Dreadful, I must confess. We have had to attend a few parties that
are... well, just not very lively." Faith confided in her two new friends.

"What do you mean?" Willow asked with a curious smile.

"It is the bloody Chase family that is driving me mad, I tell you.
Everywhere we go they are in attendance. My mother is struggling to remain
pleasant toward them. She is not fooled; she knows they are after her sons."
Faith told them with anger showing across her face.

"Which son?" Willow asked for Buffy. She knew that Buffy was already
wondering this question.

"I'm not sure. Most likely whichever one she can win. I think that
Cordelia Chase is a very lovely girl, but she is so cold. My brothers will
not settle for a socialite for a wife. They will want someone who is like my
mother." Faith sighed heavily.
"William is appalled by her and thankful she is most likely after
Angelus." Faith finished.

"How does Angelus feel for her?" Buffy cried out. She feared that they
could hear the pounding of her heart.

"He does not say. My brother rarely speaks of any female friend he
keeps. He says it rude to kiss and tell, even with family." Faith replied.

"Oh." Buffy answered.

"And what of you, Faith? Have you not yet met a man whom you might
fancy?" Willow changed the subject to give Buffy time to calm herself.

"I fear that any man whom I would even give a second glance would also
give me the jitters. You see I have a rather large dowry. I always suspect
any man who is nice to me, is only after that. They do not want to get to
know me; they just want the money." Faith sensed that these two understood
her cynical opinion.

"It is such a pity that we as women must worry about such things."
Willow sighed softly.

"I'm just glad I have parents who allow me the right to choose a
husband. I've known too many young ladies who were force to marry men neither
knew nor liked." Faith told them.

"Same here. My parents were lucky to choose each other and so want the
same choice for me." Buffy agreed.

"That reminds me, your friend Alexander, which of you is he pursuing?"
Faith had almost forgotten the one question that had weighed heavily on her
mind.

After the picnic she had seen him at several parties and had a chance to
dance with him. He was so full of life. She could not help but feel so at
ease with him. However, she did remember the way he seemed to visit here
often. She was not sure if he was Willow's beau or Buffy's.

"Neither, that I know of." Buffy gasped.

"I'm sorry, did I overstep my friendship?" Faith asked with a shaky
smile.

"NO, not at all. It is just that Alexander grew up with us. I do not
think that either of us has ever really looked at him as a man, let me
rephrased that, as a possible beau. I must confess he has always been the
elder brother I long for." Buffy replied.

"Oh. I see." Faith answered.

Willow sat quietly next to Buffy. She was afraid that she had kept her
secret too well. She had longed for Alexander often in the past two years.
She of course was aware that Alexander felt strongly for Buffy. She knew this
because he had admitted it once. She had kept his secret as well as her true
feelings.

The girls continued to talk until Angelus returned. He told Buffy that
he was glad to see she was well and expects a dance, to prove to him that her
ankle was indeed recovered, the moment she well. Then, reminding Faith that
it grew late, they left.

Buffy stared at the spot where Angelus stood earlier and felt the
familiar ache each time he left.

Chapter 23

Angelus had arrived at the McCastle's dinner party a little earlier than
usual. He was eager to see Buffy. It had been two weeks since he saw her
last. He had drilled Faith for any information on whether or not she would be
attending social events. When Faith finally revealed that she was excited
about an event because Willow and Buffy would be attending, he knew that she
liked both girls equally and that she would not be a wallflower this evening.

Looking around the room, he tried to catch a glimpse of Buffy. He saw
several familiar faces but none of them were hers. He fought to control his
emotions. He knew it would not be wise to allow others to see how excited he
was to just be in the same room with this fascinating young lady.

"I guess I can count you out of tonight's card game." William spoke next
to him, knowing exactly what Angelus was trying to hide from the others.

"I'm afraid so. I fear that I have not had much luck with cards lately."
Angelus gave him a weak excuse.

"Perhaps not the cards, but you definitely have had your share of luck."
William snorted.

"Thanks to you, dear brother." Angelus chuckled as he gave his brother a
sideways glance before entering the room.

"I fear you might be in some trouble tonight." William said dryly.

"What do you mean?" Angelus frowned.

"I have learned in these last few weeks attending these horrible dinners
that Buffy is well sought out, and that one Miss Chase has her heart set on
you. I believe you and Buffy must inform one another of your feelings or
take the chance of losing one another." William said taking a glass of
champagne from the servant passing by them.

"What in hell are you talking about?" Angelus turned to look at William.

"Come off of it. You are as smitten with her as she is with you. Yet if
you both continue to play this cat and mouse game, one or both of you will be
too late. Face facts, she is not getting younger and I'm sure she is feeling
pressure to find a suitable husband." William explained with a serious
expression.

"I doubt that. Her parents seem well matched and would want the same
opportunity for their own daughter. I'm not planning on running away with
Miss Chase, so Buffy has nothing to fear on that matter." Angelus rolled his
eyes at his brother's theory.

"Perhaps you do not know how persuasive other men can be with a sweet
little thing like Buffy. Realistically, had it been any other man with her
the way you were, he would have taken advantage of the situation. Not every
man is as strong as you." William knew he was sticking it to Angelus by
making him jealous but could not resist.

"I will kill any man who tries to force himself on her." Angelus growled.

William nearly choked on his drink. He had thought Angelus was just
infatuated with the mysterious little thing; now he feared that his brother's
feelings went much deeper.

"I fear you would." William replied with a soft tone.

"I just think it is a horrid thing when a man forces himself on a woman
then blackmails her into marriage." Angelus tried to recover.

"I agree with you." William agreed and decided not to irritate his
brother anymore with the subject. He was not in the mood to stir up anger in
Angelus. He had felt his wrath one time too many.

Angelus felt like quite anxious as he waited for Buffy to appear. Then,
just as he was about to explode, he saw her enter the room. She was not
alone, however. His heart sank when he saw her on the arm of Alexander. This
was not the first time he had seen the young lad around her. He hated to
consider that Alexander might have feelings for Buffy. He knew these two were
rather close and her family approved of him.

He began to step toward her but came to an abrupt stop. A pretty
brunette blocked his path. Looking down he saw the notorious Miss Chase. He
wondered what he must say or do to let her know, rather gently of course,
that he was not interested in her?

"Would you mind walking me in to dinner. My father is not here tonight."
Cordelia batted her eyes as she smiled sweetly up at him.

"I would be... delighted." Angelus answered once he saw that Alexander
accompanied Buffy into the dining area. He vowed to stay calm and not do or
say anything that might expose his true feelings for Buffy. Most of all he
would have to refrain from snapping off Alexander's head. He hated watching
as Buffy laughed and smiled so openly with the boy.

He wished it were he that held her attention not Alexander.

Chapter 24

Buffy had felt his presence the moment she stepped in the room. Luckily,
Alexander was glued to her side, thus preventing her from flying to Angelus
like a lovesick puppy. She knew that her feelings grew stronger for him each
time they came in contact with one another. It was a most bizarre and
intriguing experience.

She reminded herself how she had flirted and smiled like a baboon when
she was around Reilly and decided that this round she would play things much
more cooler. Not only to protect her pride but her heart as well. She knew
Angelus found her attractive but did not know he truly cared for her? Could
he grow to love her? These were the questions that concerned her.

When dinner was announced, she saw Cordelia clinging to Angelus' arm.
She wanted to run across the run and scratch the girl's eyes out. Instead she
put a big pretty smile on her face and walked alongside Alex.

When they sat down she glanced around to see where everyone would be
seated. Buffy would never understand how that woman's mind worked, but she
finally found her name and began to sit down. Alex was seated across from
her. She was relieved to see that at least one person would be close by to
talk to. Then she felt the pit of her stomach hit the floor with a loud thud
as she looked at the name to her right side. Angelus was to sit by her on one
side and then quickly glancing to her left she felt enormous relief to see
that Faith was to be seated on the other side of her. She thought this might
be a good night after all until she watched as Cordelia sat next to Alex
directly across from Angelus.

She felt more sorry for Alexander than anyone at that moment. She knew
how much he detested Cordelia, who was constantly rude to him. He was the
only young man who did not find her appealing. So he often used an imaginary
shield when she began to talk, throwing a few little puns back at her. It was
incredible to watch.

"It appears we will have a chance to talk." Angelus said low enough for
just her ears.

"Yes, it does." Buffy placed her napkin on her lap as she forced her
eyes to stay forward and not directly on the magnificent man next to her.

"Good evening, Faith." Buffy smiled happily at her newfound friend.

"It is such a relief to sit near you." Faith whispered.

"The feeling is mutual." Buffy replied with a soft giggle.

"I'm so glad you were able to come tonight. I know how much you dislike
your movement to be limited to the house." Faith commented.

"I'm looking forward to dancing tonight." Buffy replied with a soft
blush when she remembered Angelus' offer to dance with her at the next dinner
party they attended.

"I bet you are." Faith bit down on her lip from chuckling. She too,
remembered Angelus' promise to Buffy.

"How are you feeling?" Angelus cut into their conversation.

"I'm feeling well, thank you." Buffy answered politely.

"Angelus, how do you like the soup? It is one of my favorites. Mrs.
McCastle always has her cook make when I come to her parties." Cordelia ask
as she stared hard at him from across the table.

Buffy and Alexander exchanged a knowing look before dipping their spoon
in the cucumber soup. Both were struggling to not laugh or make a remark that
might start a heated conversation between the three of them.

"It is wonderful." Angelus remarked as he felt the tension between Buffy
and Cordelia.

"I hoped you enjoyed the strawberry pie I sent over to your office."
Cordelia batted her eyes as she gave Buffy a side-glance letting her know
that she was staking her claim on Angelus.

"I'm afraid William ate most of it before I returned." Angelus
apologized. He knew he could have lied but for some reason he wanted her to
know that he had not enjoyed it.

"I will have cook make you another." Cordelia stated with a sweet smile.

Alexander and Buffy both felt ill at the sight of Cordelia throwing
herself at this man.

"I'm not sure if you prefer strawberries to cherries but Buffy makes a
excellent cherry pie." Alexander informed Angelus. He wasn't sure why, but he
wanted to show up Cordelia when compared to Buffy. He sensed that Buffy liked
this new neighbor of hers. Although he was deeply in love with her himself,
he knew that she would never look at him the way she did other men. He had
accepted his role as "brother" years ago.

"Did you make the pie we ate at the picnic?" Angelus turned his
attention to Buffy. She saw Cordelia's mouth hit the table. She felt a sudden
thrill of knowing what had transpired with this man after the picnic.

"Yes, I did. I enjoy baking this time of the year." Buffy answered
without a hint of pride in her voice. She made it sound as if it was a normal
occurrence for a lady of her status to be in the kitchen.

"Why this time of the year?" Angelus was interested in what she said.
Anyone who was watching them could see his attention was for her only.

"It is cooler. The kitchens can get as hot as Hades." Buffy explained.
She had nearly fainted a few times when she helped cooked Christmas dinner.
Of course, with the extremely large guest list, she had been in the kitchen,
conferring with cook, for nearly two straight days to ensure everything was
properly prepared.

"I see." Angelus moved his hand back to allow the servant to take his
barely eaten soup away and place the entree before him.

"Do you know anything of cooking, Faith?" Buffy turn her attention
toward to his sister, Faith, who was quite surprised at her inclusion in the
conversation. Normally, she merely sat and ate while others talked around
her.

"I have tried a few times, but I fear that I'm not much help in the
kitchen." Faith confessed.

"My mother says it takes a certain kind of woman to cook. Some of us
were just not born to do such things." Cordelia snap with a hint of sarcasm
in her voice.

Buffy stiffen at her subtle insult. She knew that Cordelia thought Buffy
should have been born as a maid rather than the daughter of a wealthy
businessman.

"No, some of us only know how to delegate work. I fear I'm more
independent that most young ladies. I want to know I can care for myself if I
should ever be forced into a position that calls for it. Besides, the only
way to run a household properly is to know exactly what each task entails."
Buffy gave Cordelia a cold look as she began to eat.

Angelus wanted to stand up and cheer for Buffy but knew that would only
cause a scene.

"I think that is rather...well, smart of you. I like a woman who can do
for herself, if necessary." Angelus made sure to place a pleasant look on his
face as he glance at Cordelia across the table.

Alexander nearly fell over laughing at the sight of Cordelia, who was
beet red at the moment. He knew she had failed to impress Angelus. Like
Buffy, he enjoyed watching the ice princess get burned.

Buffy tried to focus most of her attention on Faith and Alexander while
leaving Angelus and Cordelia to chat throughout the rest of the meal. She
knew that Cordelia might have impressed him with her beauty, status, and
charm, but she saw that Angelus wanted much more than that in a wife. She
also felt a small victory in the knowledge that she had seen this man
completely naked. That he kissed her like a man starving for days.

Once the meal was over she was relieved to be able to stand and move
about. She wanted to get as far away from Cordelia Chase as possible. Her
thoughts on Angelus were decidedly different. Cordelia would attempt to stick
to Angelus like glue. She really could not blame her for trying. After all,
she had done the same thing when it came to Reilly. Buffy now realized how
pathetic she must have looked. She hoped Cordelia did not get hurt as
severely as she had been.

Chapter 24

In a matter of minutes the candlelit ballroom was filled with people while
the musicians played a soft melody. Buffy was caught up with the smell of
roses and the sound of the music that she didn't even know with whom she was
dancing. She just went from one dance to the next. She was completely
enjoying her newfound freedom. Not to mention that she felt no pain after
the last few weeks she had endured was a pleasant feeling for her.

She looked up as the music slowed and Timothy Garrett released her hand
allowing her next partner to take his place. She looked up with a flushed
face to see that her next partner was Angelus.

"I finally get a dance with the belle of the ball." He teased her as he
took her hand in his. Although she was wearing gloves, she could feel the
warmth flowing from his hand to hers.

"I would not say I qualify for such a grand honor." Buffy chuckled as
she began to let her feet follow his around the floor.

She was unaware of the sudden whispers and eyes that set on the young
couple who seemed to float as they danced together.

"If I were the judge I would definitely give you the crown. It appears
that your ankle is truly healed." Angelus smiled softy down at her.

"Yes, at last I've been freed." Buffy answered with a slow southern
drawl.

Angelus laughed as she acted so dramatic. He had watched for nearly an
hour as every available man, young or old, asked her hand for a dance. He had
felt a jolt of panic hit him hard when he watched as men smiled and flirted
with her. He knew William was correct about men flocking to her side. He
looked around the room several times to see if there was anyone who came
close to her beauty and had failed to find it.

Cordelia was a beautiful, well shaped young lass but when one looked
deep in her eyes you could see the coldness that lied there. She seemed to be
having a hard time covering that flaw up.

"I feared I might not get a chance to dance with you." Angelus commented
as he looked up at the crowd and caught several eyes glued to them.

"I'm glad you did. This way I can prove that I have completely healed."
Buffy felt the pit of her stomach starting to shake nervously as his fingers
began to caress the back of her hand.

"I wanted to tell you that I'm sorry about what happened." Angelus
decided it was best to bring up the subject so that he could see how she felt
about what had been done. He feared she would be upset that he had taken
advantage of her when she was in a weakened state.

"I.... oh...I mean I understood. I was willing." Buffy stammered for a
second searching for the right words. She did not want to sound like a loose
woman; but, at the same time, she wanted him to know that, given the chance,
she would do it again.

"I know, but you were also a bit delirious; it was wrong of me to do
those things." Angelus stared away for a second to gain control of his speech
before returning his eyes to her lovely face.

"How was it wrong? Was it wrong because I was not the right woman with
whom to do those things? Or was it wrong in a moral way?" Buffy asked.

He nearly choked on his tongue at her questions. He sensed she was
trying to tell him, in a subtle way, that not only did she enjoy it but
wanted more. Was he imagining it?

"I'm not sure how to answer the first question. I do know that morally,
of course, it is always wrong. As far as the right woman, well, I have to be
honest and say I never ask myself that before. I mean I've not been the
celibate type Buffy. I have had my randy days. I always go for the woman I'm
interested in. I fear I never question whether she is the "right" one to make
love to." Angelus wondered if any of that made sense to her? He knew that she
was a virgin and therefore knew very little about the world or the ways of
sex. How could he expect her to understand a different force drives men?

"I fear I lack knowledge in that area. But I assure you I am a fast
learner." Buffy knew what she was saying was rather aggressive but could not
help herself.

This man made her burn and ache in a way she never imagine possible.
Lately, her happiness depended on whether or not she would see him at some
point during the day. She knew she should pull back from going to fast with
him. Yet here she was letting him know she would willingly participate in a
tutorial with him as the master.

"I remember." Angelus felt the sweat sliding down the back of his neck.
She was trying to make clear she was offering herself to him. He was shocked
that she would give herself so easily? What was her motive? Was she trying to
make someone jealous, or was she just simply curious about sex? Why did he
even care, he never would have before?

"I remember every detail." Buffy's eyes slid down his face, down his
chest, and landing at his manhood. Angelus felt himself stiffen at that
precise moment her eyes fell on it.

"Are you trying to drive me mad woman?" Angelus chuckled as he began to
feel weak. He wanted her so bad that he began to wonder if they were to slip
outside how long might they have before someone would come looking for them?

"I apologize if I have offended you." Buffy batted her long eyelashes
with a fake innocent smile on her face.

"You could never offend me with such talk." Angelus began to scan the
room for a quick escape route for the two of them. He knew this was neither
the right place nor time to make love to her, but he intended to kiss her. He
had to taste her mouth before he could find any peace. He needed to know
that she truly wanted to be kissed this time.

"I had thought not, but a lady must be careful these days." Buffy
replied.

"Let us go." Angelus was relieved that the music had stopped and the
dance ended. With her hand still in his, he led her off the floor before
someone could approach her for another dance.

"You look a pit pale, perhaps you need some fresh air." He said so that
if others overheard they might think that was the reason he was taking her
outside alone.

Buffy smiled from ear to ear as he led her outside. He watched as he
cleverly slipped them both out without anyone noticing. She was impressed
with his devious abilities.

"At last, we are alone." Angelus looked from side to side to see if any
other lovers had got the same ideal as them. Seeing the path was clear
without saying another word he pulled her body next to his. Then as they both
smiled warmly at one another, he bent down and began to kiss her with so much
happiness in his heart that he knew if he died at that very moment he would
leave this world a happy man.

Chapter 25

Buffy felt as if she was literally floating on air. She had not dare
imagine that he would had been so bold or so hungry for her.

She was not sure if she was relieved or frustrated that Willow had
stopped them. Although once they arrived in the privacy of her room, Willow
made her feelings clear about their situation.

"I believe that he might share the same feelings toward you Buffy, but
for God's sake what were you two thinking? What if I had been your mother
looking for you? Do you not fear the chance of being forced into marriage
with him? Trust me darling, as much as your parents adore you if they had
caught you they would have done forced you both into marriage." Willow shook
her head while she began to undress for the evening.

"I would not have cared, at that moment, I fear." Buffy confessed.

"What? Are you daft?" Willow stared hard at her best friend. What was
going on with her? When had the thought of marriage not caused anger or fear
in her?

"Perhaps. I do not know. All I do know is that I cannot get enough of
him. He seems to complete me. I mean, yes, I can survive without him but when
we are at last together, just in the same room, I feel as if I can breath
again." Buffy swoon as she touch her lips with her fingers, remembering his
lips pressed against her own earlier.

"Buffy, listen to what you are saying. I thought you did not want
marriage. What do you want from him if not marriage?" Willow cried out in
confusion.

"Why does one have to marry just for the pleasures enjoyed?" Buffy's
eyes sparkled with mischief as she teased her best friend.

"You cannot be serious!" Willow's hand flew over her mouth to prevent it
from screaming.

"I am. Why can I not just be his lover? Come now, Willow; you cannot
seriously believe that I would stay celibate for the rest of my life. I might
not want to jump into a marriage with the man or any other. I do however want
the touch of a man. I will know the pleasures of life." Buffy gave her a
serious smile.

"I fear that bump on your head caused brain damage." Willow sighed as
she turned Buffy around to help her out of her dress and then turning to let
Buffy repeat the action for her.

"I believe that it might have actually given me more wits. I know that
we live in a world that frowns on loose women but brags on men who keeps
score of his conquests. I cannot sit by and never know what it is that a man
and woman share behind the bedroom door." Buffy reached in her trunk pulling
out of her favorite nightgown and then slipping it on.

"You;re not the first young lady who was curious, sweetheart. But let me
remind you that curiosity killed the cat." Willow pulled the blanket back and
crawled up in the bed next to Buffy.

"Have you not seen him? Willow we are talking about Angelus here, he is
incredibly handsome and sweet. How can I resist his touch, his kiss, or
anything else connected to him? " Buffy exhaled deeply.

"I understand your desires, but…" Willow confessed.

"Willow, do you long for someone?" Buffy rolled on her side so she could
watch Willows face as she struggled to answer her.

"I once thought that I did want someone. I discovered that he longed for
another. After that I just let the thought of love or lust drift away from
me. I have grown rather comfortable in this place in my life." Willow tried
to explain why she was not longing for a man to be as delirious about as
Buffy was clearly for Angelus.

"Who? Why have you not told me this before now?" Buffy ask with a hurt
expression.

"It does not matter who. It never happened nor ever will. I am content
with that decision." Willow half lied. She really was still hurt from that
knowledge but did not want Buffy to know this. She knew that Buffy would
continue to try to force the identity of the man she still secretly craved.

"I cannot believe that. I know how it feels to have ones feelings not
returned. I still wonder from time to time what might my life might be now
had he felt the same." Buffy confessed.

"If we are talking about Reilly, then I will remind you that you would
not be allowed the chance with Angelus as you are having now." Willow giggled.

"Yes, I have been lucky. I guess I now understand what they mean by when
one window closes another opens. Had I married Reilly then I would have had
to watch Angelus from a far and wonder what it would be like to be loved by
him." Buffy answered with a dreamy look in her eyes.

"Do you love him?" Willow asked with wide eyes.

"I do not know if what I feel is exactly love but I definitely lust
after him." Buffy chuckled.

"You are a brat." Willow rolled her eyes.

"No I'm not. I'm a wanton hussy." Buffy laughed.

"I'm starting to feel more sorry for Angelus every moment." Willow cried
out at her friend's brazen description of herself.

"Why?" Buffy feigned a hurt look.

"He has no clue to what he is walking into. You will drive that poor man
mad with your scheming." Willow informed her.

"Perhaps, perhaps not, I think he is man enough to take me on." Buffy
smiled wickedly.

"I would love that." Buffy smiled so brightly that although it was dark
outside he could see it clearly.

"I guess we will see in time." Willow yawned.

"Yes, time will surely tell." Buffy yawned.

"Good night." Buffy replied with a content smile as she fell asleep.

Willow turn over to blow out the candle that sat on the table next to
her side of the bed.

"Good night Buffy." Willow whispered as she began to close her eyes.

Chapter 26

Faith sat in the swing William had made for her. She was amazed at his
talent and creative side that he rarely used. It was a lovely afternoon. She
knew that she should be inside the house helping her mother with the dusting,
but she was too tired to do another thing that involved cleaning.

Her mother constantly wanted to move, dust, mop, or even paint something
every day. She was growing exhausted with her mother's urgency to make the
house look similar to their old house.

She looked up from her swing to see that someone was riding down the
road. It was a man she noted. As he rode closer she realized it was Alexander
Harrison. She felt her heart skipping a beat as he rode up to her.

"Good afternoon Miss Wainwright." Alexander took his hat off and bowed
to her.

"Hello to you too. How has your day been?" Faith tried to focus on
staying calm. It was getting harder by the second as his eyes were constantly
staring straight at her face. She was not sure what it was about this simple
man that stirred up such crazy feelings inside of her. There was nothing
unique about him. Yet he seem to be the one who could look at her and she
would feel faint.

"It has been well and now even better." Alexander smiles reached his
dimpled cheeks.

"I fear you are too kind, sir." Faith wondered if that was really her
voice she just heard flirting? What was coming over her?

"Not kind enough." Alexander teased.

"So what has you out on this beautiful evening?" She quickly changed the
subject. She was not comfortable with compliments.

"I just finished up some business in town today and seeing on how fine
the weather was, I decided to take the long way home. I'm glad, now, that I
did." Alexander answered.

"Oh." Faith mumbled. She was not sure what to say next. This was all too
confusing for her. Why did she always go mute whenever a nice guy was near?
She grew up with two older brothers and she would have thought that she would
be well experienced at carrying a conversation with a man.

"Did you enjoy the dinner party last night?" Alexander asked. He had
been one of her many dance partners the night before. Although she was not as
graceful nor as easy going, as Buffy, he could not seem to get her face out
of his mind. She was beautiful in her own way. He knew it was wrong to
compare any woman next to Buffy. Buffy was an exceptional woman. He knew that
no one would ever take her place in his heart. Not even the woman he might
marry someday.

"Yes, I did. I feel as if I gained twenty pounds from the wonderful food
I devoured." Faith joked.

"I assure you if you gained anything, it must have been beauty."
Alexander replied with a wicked smile.

"What is wrong with you?" Faith asked as she giggled.

"What do you mean?" Alex played as if he was ignorant to her question.

"Do not take this wrong but you do flatter me but I am not a fool. I see
the way you look at Buffy. I also know she does not see the sparkle in your
eye whenever she is near you." Faith could not resist from testing her theory
about Buffy and Alexander. She had asked both girls about their feelings
toward their long time friend and was surprised to hear that neither girl was
in the least interested in the most charming man she had ever met.

"I fear you see things too well. I fear that I once carried a small
torch for our beloved Miss Summers. I am also aware that her feelings for me
are not mutual." Alexander confessed.

"I'm sorry. Then again I'm more sorry for her." Faith flattered him.

"You are the one being too kind now." Alexander frowned.

"I'm sorry if I seem to be noisy." Faith blushed when she realized that
she might have hurt his feelings.

"Not in the least. I am pleased to speak to a woman who speaks her
mind." Alexander admitted.

"I do not think you feel quite that way about every woman." Faith
laughed.

She had listened and watched as Cordelia and Alexander were constantly
bickering between one another the night before.

"If we are including Miss Chase in this subject then you are correct."
Alexander chuckled.

"What is it about her that you do not take to?" Faith asked. She knew
why her brothers would find her unsuitable but she was curious what kept Alex
from being one of her followers?

"I fear she is vain. I strongly dislike a woman who is lazy and
unfeeling toward those who are weaker than herself." Alexander informed her.

"I will agree those are poor traits for anyone." Faith agreed with his
theory.

"Will you be attending our church picnic this Sunday?" Alexander found
himself remembering the picnic basket auction that was schedule this Sunday.

"I will indeed." Faith replied with a frown.

"Perhaps I will be blessed enough to pick your basket." Alexander
offered.

"Perhaps we will both be blessed in that case." Faith beamed.

"Until then." Alexander bowed once again before pushing horse back in
the direction of his home.

"Until then." Faith sighed dreamily.

She knew that caring for a man like Alexander might be risky but she
figured she had nothing else to loose.

Chapter 27

Angeline watched as her son rode away for the third consecutive day
toward the Summers plantation. She was not quite sure how she felt about this
attraction he seem to have toward the young Miss Buffy. She found the young
girl to be quite kind, compassionate, and even smart, in the few visits she
had with her.

Perhaps, she was just fearing the heartache that might occur for her
beloved son if things should go wrong. She knew that Angelus was pretty good
at sizing people up. So, if he found Buffy worthy of pursuing then she should
just be happy for him and let the rest go.

"What are you doing out here?" William asked.

"Oh Will, you scared the dickens out of me!" Angeline chuckled as she
turn to see William staring at her.

"Sorry, mother." William chuckled.

"I had started out to go and find your sister but ended up watching
Angelus leave." Angeline confided.

"I know, it is strange to see Angelus, actually openly pursuing a young
suitable woman. I feel as if he has growned up on us." William teased.

Angeline rolled her eyes, while a smile appeared on her face. She knew
that William truly cared for his older brother but that did not stop him from
tormenting him either.

"I just hope that Miss Buffy is kind to him. I know how badly he was hurt
before." Angeline stopped herself from saying the dreaded name.

"We have all been hurt mother, and we are all still surviving." William
replied. He knew the name she almost spoke out loud.

"I know. I know." Angeline sighed heavily. Then taking a hold of his hand
she allowed him to walked her about the plantation in search of her daughter.
She tried to keep her mind off of the memories of that horrible girl who had
snuck her way into their lives and then caused horrid chaos. She was just
relieved that the girl was gone. She had done what had been needed in order
to rid her son of that heartless bitch. She would not allow herself to feel
guilt for it.

She did what any mother would have done to protect her son from the
devils daughter.

Chapter 28

Angelus had been thrilled to discover that Joyce and Giles were away in
town when he arrived for his visit with Buffy. He had been on his best
behavior during his last two visits. It had been due to the fact that either
Joyce or Giles was with them each time.

"I love what you did with your hair." Angelus looked at her with adoring
eyes.

"I did not do anything. I left it down." Buffy frowned at him.

"I know, it is beautiful." Angelus replied.

"I swear." Buffy chuckled as she playfully swatted his shoulder.

"So, how was your afternoon meeting?" Buffy wanted to change the subject
before she lost herself in his dreamy eyes and began begging him to make love
to her then and there.

"Oh… it went well. Father acquired more business with a local merchant.
He was thrilled with it. I fear I was thinking of you rather than how much
business the gentleman had." Angelus confided.

"Angelus." Buffy lifted her head up to look deeper in his eyes.

"Yes, darling." Angelus held his breath as he watched her soft green
eyes turn dark with passion. He knew her moods through her eyes.

"I... well, I... was wondering if you were going to church on Sunday?"
Buffy stammered as she looked at his lips. She felt her stomach clenching at
the memory of the taste of his mouth.

"Uh? Oh, I had not planned on it, but why?" Angelus was not known for
regular church attendance. It was a day for rest, which he did for half of
the day.

"Well, this Sunday we have our annual picnic auction. What happens is
that each eligible woman makes a basket; but nobody knows who made which
basket. The men bid for the baskets. All the proceeds go to our local
orphans. Once the basket is paid for, the woman who made the basket steps
forward for lunch with the lucky man. We usually have a few games for fun, as
well." Buffy explained their tradition. It was one of her favorites because
it was for a worthy cause.

"So how will I know which one is your basket?" Angelus frowned. He did
not like the thought of someone else outbidding him for her basket. He felt a
burning sensation rush from his stomach, straight to his heart.

"I'm not supposed to tell you." Buffy cried out.

"So, what will happen if I guess wrong? What if I pick Cordelia's
basket?" Angelus tested her. He wondered if she was as jealous as he?

"You better not! For one thing she does not make a single item for her
basket; and for another, I will punch her in the eye." Buffy's voice began to
rise higher with each word. Her face turned red.

"Okay, okay, I was just teasing." Angelus began to laugh so hard it hurt.

Buffy had her hands on her hips, clucking her tongue. She had not found
it as nearly as funny as he had.

"I'm sorry... Buffy... I'm... serious." Angelus fought to hold the
laughter back.

"What did you find so funny?" Buffy snapped.

"I...well, just the thought of seeing you popping Cordelia in the face
was too much. I know you could do it, sweetheart; it was just that I could
see Cordelia screaming and crying as if you had shot her." Angelus explained
as he breathed heavily.

"Oh...well...that does sound funny... ha ha..." Buffy found herself
giggling at the image he had portrayed to her.

"See." Angelus took her hand in his hand.

"So, tell me, how will I know yours?" Angelus repeated the earlier
question.

"Use your heart. I think you will know without any hints at all." Buffy
placed her free hand over his.

"I hope your right." Angelus answered.

They stared into one another's eyes and felt the electricity running
between them. In moments like this, he felt as though she was a magnet,
pulling and drawing him to her. She was like a force that one could not break
away from, no matter how hard one tried.

"I'm glad you told me about the picnic." Angelus stated as his head
leaned in closer to hers.

"Me too." Buffy spoke softy as she anticipated his kiss.

Their lips connected and their souls began to sing in harmony as they
enjoyed a sweet and tender kiss. Her hand tightened in his grip as she felt
the hunger growing and burning in her veins.

"Ah hmm." They heard a fake cough.

Buffy pulled away from the kiss and turned, expecting, as usual, to see
Willow as usual. She was disappointed. It was not Willow at all. Instead it
was the last person she needed to see her kissing Angelus. The very last
person!
Chapter 29

Buffy felt her stomach clenched as she stared up at the man she once thought
she would marry. Buffy waited for him to speak, but he said nothing. He just
seemed to stare at her as if she were invisible.

"Buffy?" Angelus broke the silence.

He was also looking at the strange young man, who seemed to be in agony.
What worried Angelus most was the way that Buffy seemed to stop breathing as
she looked up at this mystery man. Who was he, he wondered?

"Uh?" Buffy slowly turn her head to look back at Angelus.

"Who is this?" Angelus felt his palms sweat and his heart race as he
watched several different emotions fly across her face before she pulled
herself back together.

"I'm sorry.... I.... uh.... Angelus Donavon, this is Mr. Reilly Finn."
Buffy felt her mouth dry up as is she had tons of cotton balls in her mouth.

"Hello, sir." Reilly released his clinch fists and found his voice once
again.

"Hello, Mr. Finn." Angelus stood up and extended his hand toward the
young man.

Reilly stared down at the hand as if it were poisonous and then, with a
shaking hand he reached out, giving it a quick firm shake before pulling
away. Angelus knew the man was not happy with the thought of Buffy being with
him. He also sensed that Buffy had not expected a visit from him today or,
for that matter, ever.

"Reilly...I ...why are you here?" Buffy frowned up at him. She was still
struggling with her words.

"I apologize for interrupting you. I came to see your father on
important business matters. I know he is not expecting me, but while I was
traveling through I thought I would call, hoping to get a chance to speak to
him before I return home." Reilly replied with a nervous smile on his face.

"Father and mother are in town at the moment. They should be return very
shortly." Buffy stated.

Reilly stared at Angelus hard before returning his eyes on Buffy's face.

"I see. Perhaps I should just wait in your fathers study." Reilly was
straining to keep his voice steady as he turn on his heels and march back to
the house.

"Buffy, are you okay?" Angelus reached out to touch her but felt her
flinch away.

"No, I'm afraid I'm not." Buffy felt the angry tears stinging the back
of her eyelids.

"What is wrong?" Angelus knew there was a history between Buffy and
Reilly but was unsure of its extent.

"I'm...well... I'm just mad. Not at you, though." Buffy turn to look at
him and made a weak smile.

"Who is he?" Angelus looked at the spot where Reilly had been standing
seconds before.

"He is a old friend.... well, I'm not sure if I would even call him a
friend, exactly." Buffy mumbled.

Angelus stared at her. She was not making sense. This was not the Buffy
he knew. She had really been shaken up by this unexpected visit from Reilly.

"What would you call him then?" Angelus frowned.

"A jackass." Buffy felt her stomach knotting up from the anger that was
starting to boil at the pit of her stomach.

"Okay." Angelus chuckled.

"I'm serious. Once, he appeared to me as a great man, compassionate,
giving, and loyal. It turn out he was just like any other idiot." Buffy felt
a hot tear slide down her face.

"Is he the reason you are so jaded when it comes to love?" Angelus held
his breathe. He knew he had no right to ask such a personal question, but his
heart ached for her. She had seemed so scared, so sad, and yet so angry from
just seeing the man.

"LOVE? I fear he knows nothing when it comes to love! All he knows is
bonds and farming. He is greedy and stupid!" Buffy growled.

"Buffy, sweetheart, please calm down; you are starting to scare me."
Angelus reached out to grip her shoulders. He was shocked to feel her body
trembling like a frighten child's. This Reilly fellow had an horrendous
affect on her. The situation was definitely not a good one, he thought to
himself.

"I'm sorry. I really am. I just...I need to go to my room. I ... I think
my parents are here." Buffy turned to the sound of the carriage riding up to
the side of the house.

"I understand. I will go. Will, I see you at church?" Angelus asked.

"Yes, you will." Buffy shook her head.

"I'm sorry our time alone was interrupted." Angelus tried to hide his
deep disappointment but failed.

"I know. Me too." Buffy replied with a brighter smile.

Buffy stood on her tiptoes and placed a soft kiss on his cheek.

"I will miss you." Angelus replied. He reached out and stroked her cheek
with his hand.

"I will miss you too." Buffy felt some of the anger leave her body; she
suspected it was his touch that was causing the change in her.

"Good night." Angelus bent down and brushed her lips with his own before
leaving her in the garden.

Buffy sat back on the marble seat and stared at the house. She knew that
her parents would not be very happy to see Reilly, nor would Willow. The
burning question in her mind was "Why is he really here?" She knew he had
lied when he said he needed business advice from her father. She had been
respectful enough not to call him on it in front of Angelus.

Standing up, she took a few long, deep breathes before heading inside.
She feared there was more to this unexpected trip than Reilly wanted her to
know. With Angelus by her side, Buffy knew she need not fear anything, not
even him.
Chapter 29

Buffy waited in her room with Willow pacing back and forth in front of
her. Once she had gone inside she saw that her parents had been informed of
Reilly's presences. Her mother saw her and glancing up at her room she
understood the silent order that was being given. Her mother wanted her far
away from what she feared would not be good news.

"So he said he was here on business?" Willow asked for the third time in
the past hour.

"ARGGGH! Yes, Willow!" Buffy snarled.

She saw the hurt in her best friends face and sighed.

"Willow, I'm sorry. I'm just frustrated. I mean he saw me kissing
Angelus. I'm sure he will tell Father about it." Buffy sobbed.

"NO, he won't. He knows that he has no right telling your father about a
measly little kiss, after the things he did with you." Willow regretted the
words once they left her mouth. She had sworn never to remind Buffy what she
had allowed Reilly to once do to her. She had been weak, stupid, and a bit
drunk at the time. She thought that he was going to be her husband, so it was
okay to do such an intimate thing.

"Thanks Wil." Buffy rolled her eyes and then falling back on her bed she
stared up at the ceiling.

"I'm sorry Buffy. I just meant that Reilly is married and therefore it
is no longer his concern who you kiss." Willow hoped to make up for her
earlier outburst.

"Buffy." They both bolted to the door when they heard a soft knock
followed by her mother's voice.

"Yes," Buffy threw the door open wide.

"Your father has asked me to come up here and talk to you." Joyce gulped
hard. She thought this entire situation was horrible. She also prayed that
Buffy would not agree to what the two men had discussed for a lengthy amount
of time. She also hated the fact that Giles had forced her into having this
discussion in the first place.

"What?" Buffy's golden face turned as white as a ghost.

"Sit down." Joyce led her daughter back to her bed and taking the chair
across the room she set it front of her daughter.

Willow began to fidget and debated on whether she should leave.

"Willow you can stay." Joyce sensed her doubt on whether she belonged.

"Thank you." Willow ran to the bed and, sitting by her best friend,
grabbed her hand in hers for support.

"I fear that Reilly has come to visit us due to an extremely bad
situation. I fear that his wife is dying. She has a rare disease; I cannot
remember the name, which affects her heart. Reilly came to tell your father
because it appears he never truly loved the girl. He cares deeply for her,
mind you, but his heart was never in the marriage." Joyce hesitated for a
second before continuing.

"He has come to ask your father for your hand in marriage once she has
passed away and the year of mourning is up." Joyce decided to be direct. She
knew that it was the only way to communicate what she had been told.

"Now, before you get too upset, your father was considering how hard it
was for you when Reilly left. He is not sure how you feel about such an
arrangement and honestly wants to know where you stand. Neither one of us
expect you to make up your mind right away. Nor do we want you to marry
Reilly if you do not love him." Joyce explained with a slow steady pace.

"Are you serious?" Willow cried out in anger.

"Yes, I'm afraid I am." Joyce frowned.

Both of them glanced at Buffy who was staring at the floor, silent. She
did not seem to be able to say a word.

"Buffy?" Willow tugged at her hand.

"I cannot believe the nerve of that bastard." Buffy said low.

"What dear?" Joyce leaned closer to her daughter.

"I said I couldn't believe the nerve of that bastard. I'm sorry mother,
but he hurt me. I will never, be second choice, to any man." Buffy lifted her
head to show a pair of raging mad eyes.

"I understand dear. As I said earlier, your father and I do not want you
to do anything unless you want too. Also, remember that there is no need to
make a hasty decision. I mean, she is not... well...she has not passed away
yet." Joyce felt guilty for talking about a young lady who was on her
deathbed as they spoke.

"I do not love him nor do I think I ever did. I believe I was in love
with the thought of love when we were together. I cannot nor will I ever
marry him." Buffy said with confidence.

"Very well. I will let your father know of your wishes. Buffy..." Joyce
had stood up to leave when a thought had occurred to her.

"Buffy, do you love another?" Joyce remembered that Angelus Donavon had
been visiting rather often and suddenly of late.
"I do not know if it is love I feel but I am deeply attracted to Mr.
Donavon. Reilly came upon us while we shared a kiss." Buffy did not even
blink an eye as she told her mother of the situation that had occurred
between them when they were interrupted.

"OH! I see. Well, please be more careful where you are while sharing
affection for one another in the future." Joyce replied. She stared at her
daughter with loving eyes.

"I shall." Buffy promised as she smiled up at her mother.

"Dinner should be ready shortly." Joyce reminded them as she walked out
of the room.

"He has a lot of nerve. I hate him even more now." Willow exclaimed
after Joyce was gone.

"I think it is sick how he is already trying to win you over before his
wife is in her grave much less cold in her grave." Willow continued with her
ranting.

"I fear he is mistaken, if he thinks that I will play second fiddle."
Buffy finally spoke.

"Are you going to tell Angelus about this?" Willow asked. It had just
occurred to her that Angelus might get jealous if he learned that her ex love
had come for her hand in marriage. Even if it was the most morbid proposal
she had ever heard.

"I do not know. I feel on one hand there is no need, while on the other,
I wonder what he would do if he knew?" Buffy confessed as a wicked smile
appeared on her face.

Chapter 30

Angelus sat at his desk staring at the piles of paperwork he had fallen
behind on. He was still puzzled about the unexpected visit of what he assumed
was Buffy's ex-suitor. His gut instincts told him that this man had really
messed with her heart and views on life. He already did not care much for
him. He was also concerned about what he had just showed up like he did. He
knew this was not about good news or business matters as he had stated.

He heard a soft tap on the door.

"Come in." He called out.

"Hello. Sorry to intrude but I thought I might find you here." Cordelia
Chase came marching in with a picnic basket in one hand.

"Hello Miss Chase." Angelus replied with a lack of enthusiasm.

"Hello to yourself. I was starting to fear you left the country. I came
by the last two days and your father said you were not in." Cordelia informed
him.

"I was busy with other matters. Please sit." Angelus pointed to the
chair across from his desk.

"Thank you." Cordelia batted her eyes.

"So how can I help you?" Angelus asked with a weak smile.

"I thought you would like some food. I also thought you might like to
see my basket. I worked hard on it. Do you like it?" Cordelia asked.

Angelus stared at the basket that she had decorated with baby blue
ribbons and flowers. He had to admit it was rather pretty.

"It looks lovely." Angelus answered.

"Thank you." She giggled.

"I'm not sure if you have heard or not but we are having our annual
picnic basket auction. I hope that you and your family do attend. It is so
much fun." Cordelia smiled warmly.

"I have heard. I'm quite looking forward to it." Angelus smiled warmly.
He was thinking of the time he would be allowed to spend with Buffy once he
picked her basket.

"That reminds me, I ran into a fellow that I believe you might know. His
name was.... Reilly...Finch or something like that?" Angelus could not
remember the last name.

"Reilly Finn? Why in heavens is he in town?" Cordelia snapped.

"I do not know. I just know while I was at the Summers' place he stopped
by there to speak with Mr. Summers. I gather you do, indeed, know this
fellow." Angelus inquired.

"Yes, I do. I'm afraid that scoundrel married my cousin, Anya. His
parents had made arrangements with hers before their deaths, if he was to
inherit, he had to keep those arrangements." She began to explain.

"So he did not love the girl. He married her to gain his inheritance."
Angelus asked.

"Pretty much. Anya and he had grown up together so it was not as if they
did not know one another. I know he had his sights on Buffy Summers before
her parents informed him of the guidelines to inheriting his wealth."
Cordelia frowned.

"I see. So when he was courting Buffy, he did not know all the specifics
at the time?" Angelus asked with a frowned of his own.

"I'm not sure. I think that is how it went. You would have to ask her?"
Cordelia did not like discussing another woman's past with the man she was
chasing. She knew that Buffy was interested in Angelus and that he returned
some of those feelings.

"Thank you. I'm sorry for asking so many questions. I have become quite
close to the Summers family and when I saw how badly it had upset them to see
the young man, I guess I grew curious to know what he had done to them."
Angelus hoped that sounded solid enough to keep her from guessing just how
upset he really was.

"I understand. You're a sweet man. So tell me are you hungry?" Cordelia
opened her basket.

"Indeed." Angelus felt his stomach clenched at the thought of sharing a
meal with the viper, but he knew it would be rude of him to refuse. Besides
perhaps he could get more information about Mr. Finn from her before their
lunch was finished he to

Chapter 31

William was not sure why he had agreed to go to church with Angelus. He
was bloody tired. He had won quite a sum of money during his late night poker
game. He looked over at Angelus and noticed that he seemed a bit gloomy.

"Listen here, bloke, I got up this early for you, you had better, at
least, be in a good mood." William yawned.

"I'm sorry. I'm just worried about picking the right basket." Angelus
explained.

William rolled his eyes in disgust when he remembered the true purpose
for this little trip.

"I think this entire thing is stupid. Just ask people for the damn money
and be done with it." William cried out in frustration.

Angelus looked at his younger brother and broke into a grin. William was
known for his lack of compassion, or patience for that matter.

"I fear that would take all the fun out of it. Besides, you know men pay
big when it comes to spending time with women, and it is a worthy cause."
Angelus replied with a soft sigh behind it.

"What is really bothering you? I mean, suppose you do not pick her
basket, then what? I do not think she will lose interest in you over such a
trivial mistake." William scoffed.

"No, but I really want to talk to her and, right now, this is the only
way. She has been busy the last three days and I'm concerned." Angelus
twisted his neck from side to side. He hated feeling tense.

"Could she merely be playing hard to get, dear brother?" William
chuckled.

"I'm afraid you do not know Buffy very well. She hasn't time for such
nonsense. She is straightforward and candid. Yet, she is not too cold or
harsh, unless truly provoked." Angelus stated with pride in his voice.

"She sounds like a bloody saint. Trust me, brother, when I say there is
no such woman on this earth." William snorted.

"She is close enough to perfection for me." Angelus smiled warmly.

"Very well." William sighed.

"So tell me more about this bounder you fear might become a problem for
you two lovebirds." William reminded him of the intruder causing his beloved
such anxiety.

"Mr. Finn. I cannot say that I really know too much about him. Cordelia
had explained that he and Buffy had been rather close and she had believed
that marriage was a real possibility. But then Finn learned that inheriting
the family money required marriage to the woman they selected for him. He
took the money." Angelus sighed heavily.

It was a story they had seen and heard too many times before.

"So the guy was a greedy cad. She was better off without him." William
snorted.

"I'm sure she is aware of that now, but I doubt she realized that at the
time of the break up." Angelus explained.

"Who did the lousy bloke marry?" William asked.

"He ended up with Cordelia's cousin. I'm sure Cordelia needled Buffy
over that fact. It all makes sense now. I mean, why she seemed to be weary
even discussing the idea of a future with a man." Angelus thought out loud.

"Look, I just want you to relax. Remember if you do not get her basket
the world will continue turning. Once the picnic is over, you can give her a
ride home. I'm sure she will prefer you over all the other men." William
smiled.

"You do?" Angelus looked doubtful.

"Trust me, brother; the girl has eyes for you alone." William rolled his
eyes.

"Are you jealous?" Angelus cried out.

He watched his brother closely fearing his brother had become fond of
his new love.

"No, not at all. Perhaps I'm jealous of the fact that you have found
love so swiftly and easily. I think that Buffy is a wonderful girl but I have
no deep feelings for her. I promise." William's eyes proved his point.

"I'm glad to hear that." Angelus sighed heavily.

"Here we are." William opened the door and stepped out.

Angelus sat inside for a few seconds before calming himself down.
Stepping out of the carriage, he was stunned to see what appeared to be the
entire county had turned out for this special occasion.

"What's wrong?" William asked.

"Look how many women are here?" Angelus gasped.

William hated to admit it but the odds were increasing by the second.
Chapter 32

Buffy stared up at the sky and noticed the rain filled clouds above their
heads. She prayed that the weather continue to be tame until the last basket
was auction off. She knew that everyone could fit inside the church or
community barn to eat. But the auction itself would need to be done outside.

She was proud of how many young women and men had showed up from the
local towns of their county. She had worked hard on this project with Pastor
Steven's. She knew he felt as strongly as she did about the poor environment
that orphans were being raised in, as well as the mistreatment. She wanted to
help heal some of their pain that was caused from losing their parents.

She always got teary when she imagined what her life might have been
like had she been orphaned. She feared she would not have been half as brave
and strong as some of the children she visited.

She felt someone tugging at her arm. Turning she saw Willow smiling from
ear to ear.

"What has come over you?" Buffy exclaimed.

"He is here. I told you he would not forget." Willow cried out happily.

"I owe you. When we get home remind me to pay up." Buffy sighed. She had
feared that Angelus had forgotten all about this gathering. She had wanted to
see him ever since the day Reilly had arrived and interrupted them.

She hesitated not because she did not want to see Angelus, it was more
the fact that she knew he would want answers. Answers she was not sure she
could yet provide. She wanted to open her heart and tell him the entire
sordid story. Then she would imagine what he might think of her if he knew
the truth. That made her cringe with fear. She could not bear the look of
disgust she was sure he would wear.

Although there were moments when she believed it was possible for him to
see past her mistakes, she was uncertain he was a man who would not look down
on her for her past mistakes. Still, she could not find the courage or the
trust to tell him. Therefore she allowed him to believe she was so busy with
this auction to visit with him.

"Oh, Willow, he brought William with him. I wonder if he is here looking
for his future wife?" Buffy teased Willow.

Although she knew Willow had no feelings toward Angelus' little brother
she still could not help but think perhaps Willow might find him handsome, at
least.

"Please do not play match maker. I hope you can clearly see that William
is not the sort of man I would dally with." Willow frowned.

"Whatever do you mean?" Buffy wondered what she knew about William that
would turn her away from such a man.

"He is the sort that likes to break hearts. I would even wager he is the
gambling sort. He likes taking risks. He is not stable for himself or anyone
else for that matter." Willow explained.

Buffy was amazed at how well Willow usually sized up people she just met.

"You sure have spent plenty of time trying to figure him out." Buffy
remarked with a crooked smile.

"Buffy!" Willow cried out as she rolled her eyes.

"At last I get to see my fair maiden." Angelus had approached the girls.

He knew the instant that Buffy turned toward him that she was only
partially happy to see him. He was not sure of the cause, but he knew,
instinctively, that she was still upset. He wished he knew the specifics of
unease? Who was he kidding, he feared that this man was coming back to steal
the one woman he had fallen hard for, he told himself.

Chapter 33

The Auction had begun a few minutes after Angelus found his beloved. He
watched as she began to assist the pastor. He knew it had been an excuse to
run from him; he thought she was relieved not have to stand by him for long.

"I cannot believe some of the baskets I have seen so far!" William cried
out in shock as he approached his brother.

"There are hundreds of them." Angelus frowned.

"That is not what I was referring too. Some of these things look
ghastly. There is a handful that I might consider buying were the lady
guaranteed to be as graceful as the basket she made." William confessed.

Angelus stared at his brother with a crooked smile. He had hoped that
once they arrived William might change his mind about buying a basket. He
knew his brother's intentions had nothing to do with helping starving
children, but, at least, he was joining the festivities.

"Which one do you think might be hers?" Angelus chewed on his lower lip.

"I hate to say this, but I haven't a bloody clue. You know, start with
her favorite color. Then consider her sense of style." William felt foolish
discussing baskets but knew Angelus was consumed with fear.

"You realize you two are quite rude." Faith walked up toward her
brothers.

"Why?" They asked in union.

"Did you even consider asking me to ride along with you?" Faith
reminding them of how they had shot out before the sun had even come up.

"You made it. What is the big fuss?" William stared at her as if she was
crazy.

"That is not the point. How come you two always leave me out these
days?" Faith pouted.

"Sorry, sis." Angelus wrapped his arms around her shoulders pulling her
closer to him.

"Thank you, Angelus." Faith turn side ways to stick her tongue out at
William. He just rolled his eyes and chuckled under his breath.

"Faith, I need your help. Which of those damn baskets is Buffy's?"
Angelus pleaded with her.

"I can tell you which one is mine." Faith stated.

"Thanks." Angelus groaned.

"Seriously, Angelus. Look at the baskets and ask yourself does this
reflect the woman that you want? I, for instance, entwined wild flowers
through my basket. It is simple, yet makes a statement. I'm like a wild
flower." Faith beamed.

William was listening to the conversation and burst into laughter at her
last remark.

"I'm sorry, but it was so bloody funny. You think you are a wild
flower." William held his stomach.

"YES! What would you compare me too?" Faith snorted with her hands
firmly on her hips.

"I do not honestly know, but it would not be anything close to flowers
or anything else delicate." William answered with a smirk.

"Funny!" Faith growled as she turned her back on William gave Angelus
her attention instead.

"I see your point. Thanks." Angelus kissed the top of her head as he
glared past her toward his brother.

"Anytime." Faith smiled as she began to search for her mother. She did
not tell her brothers; but she was as nervous as Angelus, but for the
opposite reason. She feared who might actually pick her basket.

"You should not be so mean to her. She is no longer the pig headed
little sister she once was. Please stop your constant teasing; our little
sister is growing up." Angelus said with a serious tone.

"You're right, of course." William sighed as he kicked a loose piece of
gravel.

"I'm always right." Angelus chuckled.

"Yeah, well lets see if your luck holds out when it comes to time to
bid." William smirked. He finally got the last word in. Because the bidding
started a second later and Angelus was paying close attention to the auction.
Chpt. 34

The bidding had begun and Angelus stood in the middle of the crowd
watching as each basket was presented for auction. He would let out a long
deep breath after each girl stepped up to the basket once the bidding had
concluded. So far none of these girls were Buffy. He would look around the
crowd and wonder which man among these would fight him for her basket? He
would not be one bit surprised if not at least half of them tried.

It was not as though the others girls here were not pretty and unique in
their own way, it was just that in his eyes none of them shined quite like
Buffy. He watched as Buffy gave each basket to the pastor. Then something
caught his eye. She was wearing a new dress he noted. The color was a soft
shade of pink with tiny little pearls sewn in heart shapes. It reminded him
of Valentine's Day. He knew it sounded rather strange but his instincts told
him that perhaps a basket that matched her dress was the key.

He glanced around once he saw the pastor lift up the next basket. He
knew this could not be hers. It had dark red ribbons with bells all over it.
It was too ostentatious and boldly colored to belong to Buffy.

He saw Cordelia standing not too far away and noted that she was wearing
an ice blue dress with white trimming. An image flashed through his mind. She
had brought a basket that had the same colored ribbons on it. Was this their
secret? They wore a dress that matched their basket?

"No, that would be too easy." He said to himself.

"Sold for two dollars." The pastor announced as he stood next to the man
who had won the bidding. A tall brunette walked up on the stage to take the
basket and her date for the afternoon.

"Please don't get to restless fellows; we have a few more yet to go."
The pastor chuckled as he saw the frustration in a few of the randy young
men's eyes.

"Buffy," The pastor signaled her for the next basket.

Buffy presented him with one that was covered with hearts and pearls
upon it.

"We will start the bidding at two cents." Pastor Steven's began.

Angelus watched Buffy's face closely. He saw her make eye contact with
him for a second before returning her attention back to the basket.

Angelus felt his heart scream to bid on it. He heard the bidding grow up
to two dollars within two minutes and watch as Buffy glanced at Willow
nervously then back at the basket.

"One hundred dollars." Angelus roared out in the middle of the crowd.

There were several gasps around him. He looked around nervously before
making staring up at Buffy as he began to walk to the stage.

"Are you sure?" Pastor Steven's choked.

"Absolutely, I will even go higher if necessary." He turned to look
around at the other men behind him. He saw that they feared his challenge.

"Anyone willing to challenge this?" Pastor Steven's called out to the
crowd.

No one stepped forward. Angelus forced himself to breathe as he waited.

"Okay, then son you have yourself a deal. Going once, going twice,
sold." Pastor Steven's announced.

"Would the lucky lady step forward, please?" Pastor Steven's looked
toward the small group of girls standing behind Buffy and noted that none of
them seem to move.

"Well, come on." Pastor Steven's chuckled.

"I'm here." Buffy announced as she swallowed the large lump in her
throat.

"This is your basket Buffy?" Pastor Steven's asked with a surprise
expression.

"Yes, sir." Buffy nodded her head and then looked down at Angelus with a
wide smile.

"Very well, Willow will you help me then, dear." Pastor Steven's asked.

"Yes, sir." Willows grin reached to her ears.

Angelus marched up the steps and taking the basket in one hand he
offered Buffy his other arm. Placing her hand in the crook of his arm she
allowed him to walk her down from the platform and then lead him to a private
area not too far away.

"I cannot believe you bid so much money! What would you have done if you
were wrong?" Buffy cried out once they were out of hearing range.

Instead of answering her, he pulled her close to him and then gently,
his lips touched hers knowing they were shielded from curious eyes. Pushing
her lips apart, he slipped his tongue inside her mouth and tasted the
sweetest thing he had ever known. Buffy moaned and slid her hands up and down
his chest. She felt her legs turning to jelly and her heart skipping rapidly.

Then remembering where they were, Buffy pushed her hand up to block his
mouth from hers. She gasped for air and she stared into his beautiful soft
brown eyes.

"I'm sorry, but I do not want more trouble." Buffy explained once she
saw the disappointment in his eyes.

"More?" Angelus asked.

"Well, I sort of told mother that we were kissing the other day, and she
asked that I be more careful about when and where we shared our affection."
Buffy blushed.

"Oh, I understand." Angelus swallowed hard.

"Thank you." Buffy took the basket from him and then sat down on the
soft grass.

"Here, sit." Buffy patted to a spot by her.

"Thank you, God." Angelus said out loud staring up at the sky.

'"Why are you thanking God?" Buffy giggled.

"I prayed so hard all night and all morning that He give me the wisdom
to pick the right basket." Angelus confessed.

"What sort of wisdom did He bless you with?" Buffy smiled.

"I might be wrong with this theory, but I noticed that the dress you
wore had hearts made of pearls. When I saw the basket with hearts made from
pearls and the ribbon was pink, just as your dress, I hoped that it was a
sign and not coincidence." Angelus explained as he helped her arrange the
food.

"What did you make?" Angelus cried out as he saw so much food before
them.

"I made some fried chicken, coleslaw, biscuits, salad, and cherry
cobbler." Buffy went through the list.

"You made all of this?" Angelus asked with disbelief.

"YES, I told you I can cook my own food" Buffy started fixing his plate.

"You are amazing." Angelus announced.

Buffy glanced at him briefly before returning her attention to the food.
She knew she was a light shade of red. She could feel her cheeks burning.

"Why do you blush so?" Angelus teased her.

"I do not know." Buffy confessed as she handed him his plate.

"Are you happy that I chose the right basket?" Angelus placed his fork
on the plate and set it down next to him.

Buffy seem to freeze. Angelus reached out to still her hands once again
he setting her plate down. Still holding her hands with one hand, he lifted
up her chin so he could look into her eyes.

"Buffy, are you okay? Have I done something wrong?" Angelus' voice
trembled with fear. He could not imagine what his life might be like without
her in it. He hoped he had not been too forward earlier with the kiss.

"I'm fine. Honestly." Buffy's eyes were locked with his.

"Then what bothers you so? I know that it is not my business what occurs
in your life but when I see something bothering you, it...well, it hurts me
to know you are suffering." Angelus spoke slowly. He feared saying the wrong
thing.

"I do not suffer from anything, I swear. I am just a bit...well, I'm
just...I..." Buffy was struggling to find the right way to explain why she
was truly nervous when he was near her without exposing her sordid past.

Before she could finish they were interrupted.

"I told you they would be here. Buffy loves this spot." Alexander
announced to his date as they walked upon the couple.

"Hello, Angelus; Buffy. I hope you two do not mind if we sit with you."
Faith asked as she caught a sign of relief on Buffy's face and frustration on
her brother's.

"Not at all. The more the merrier." Buffy smiled.

Glancing at Angelus, she gave him an apologetic smile, while he, in
return, gave her a look that clearly informed her their conversation was not
at an end.

"So I see that Alexander, here, selected your basket." Buffy said with a
cheery voice.

"Yes, it appears I am the lucky young man. I have always had a fondness
for wild flowers." Alexander smiled warmly toward Faith before returning his
attention to the others.

Angelus caught a soft blush surface on his sister's face. He then
noticed the soft way Alexander spoke around his sister. He suspected that
there was more to these two than he had seen before. He had secretly feared
Alexander would rival him for Buffy's attention. Now, watching as Alexander
spoke to and smiled at Faith, he understood where the man's intentions lay.
He wondered how Buffy would react to these two as a couple?

"I wonder who bid on Willow's?" Faith asked.

"I believe she placed her as the very last one to be bid on. I fear she
hoped the pastor would be the only one to bid on it." Buffy laughed.

"She sells herself short, if that is the case." Alexander rolled his
eyes.

"I agree with you." Faith handed Alexander his plate. She felt a jolt
course through their fingers as they had touched briefly. She saw that he,
too, had felt it.

"Willow!" Buffy cried out as she reached her hand up waving it about so
she could catch Willow's attention.

Willow spotted the group then called to someone behind her. All four of
them waited to see who would walk past the bushes to join their shy friend.

Seconds went by before they all nearly choked on their food when they
saw William following a few feet behind her carrying a basket with white
ribbons and seashells covering it.

"What are the odds?" Angelus chuckled.

"I told you I knew where they were." Willow snapped at William who did
not seem to be too happy with his date.

"I should have known you would know. I mean, after all, you know
everything right?" William snorted.

Buffy glanced at Angelus and then at Alexander. All three suspected that
these two might have a chance. Sure, they were complete opposites, but they
knew all too well that sometimes opposites attract.
Chpt.35

"Where can we go to see the fire works closer?" Angelus whispered in
her ear.

"I think we are fine here." Buffy stiffen.

"I need to talk to you." Angelus pleaded.

"I know. I'm not ready yet." Buffy finally admitted.

"Why? What is going on? I think I have waited long enough for you to
tell me what is bothering you. I need to know if you feel the same for me?"
Angelus snapped.

He looked as surprised as she did. He was not sure what was bothering
him so? He knew that whatever was going on in Buffy's life was truly none of
his business. Yet he could not shrug off the feeling that this visit from
Reilly had brought upon something threatening their relationship.

Relationship? What is wrong with you, Angelus? Are you saying that you
want a chance at a future with Buffy? More than just flirting and acting like
close friends? Could she be the one that you would want to take as a wife?

He shook his head to stop the questions that were boggling his head.

"The others will be back shortly and it will appear rude if we leave."
Buffy explained with a hurt look in her eyes.

The others had gone to check out the new ice cream that Miss Abbot had
created. She was a gifted woman with a rare talent for desserts.

"You are right, of course. I'm sorry for being so rude, I just hate this
feeling." Angelus tried to explain in a calm voice.

"What feeling?" Buffy frowned at him.

"The feeling that Reilly Finn has come to cause problems. The fear that
you still love him." Angelus admitted his fears to her.

"I do not love him." Buffy stated with a cold tone.

"But he has put you in a horrible and distant mood." Angelus pointed out.

"Perhaps he has. Perhaps I'm just tired of playing these games with
you." Buffy snapped at him.

"What GAMES?" He cried out in disbelief.

"The ones where you kiss me, flirt with me...then leave me with nothing
but a ghastly ache. I cannot stand it anymore." Buffy sighed heavily.

"What are you saying?" Angelus felt his stomach muscles clench at the
possibility of what she was confessing.

"I think a man of your experience knows exactly what I am saying." Buffy
stared deep into his eyes. Her eyes never wavered from his. He felt as if he
had been punch in the gut.

"Buffy, are you saying you want to be lovers?" Angelus' voice shook with
fear.

"I...well.... perhaps...I do not know what I want anymore. Since you
have come along I cannot think straight. Why do you men always do that?"
Buffy growled.

"I do not understand. That is, I understand that women have needs just
as men do. But why would a lady of your standing want to take a lover?"
Angelus gulped hard.

"Because, I have told you before, and I will repeat it. I do not want to
ever marry. I, however, said nothing about not wanting to take a man to my
bed." Buffy hoped that she was scaring him away. She knew it would be easier
this way; she would not have to explain her past with Reilly.

"Buffy!" Angelus cried out in shock.

"What? You can take many women to your bed and not marry a single one of
them, but I cannot do the same?" Buffy wrapped her arms around her waist and
put on her stubborn face.

She knew this was not fair but did not care. After all, he was the one
trying to force her to tell him something before she is ready. So, all is
fair in love and war.

"Do you want to be my lover, Buffy?" Angelus' gut instinct was to stop
this conversation but the look in her eyes made him consider another option.
He would call her bluff. In the short time that he had known her, she never
once appeared the harlot. Why, now, would she pretend to be less than a lady?

"I...suppose. I mean, I have to have a first. I suppose you will do."
Buffy felt her stomach doing flip-flops at the sound of her own voice. What
would she do if he took her up on the offer? NO, he would never do that.
Angelus is much too honorable to do that sort of thing with her.

"Fine. I say we leave now before the others return." Angelus reached out
and snatched her hand in his.

Buffy felt her head spinning as her heart raced. She put herself in this
situation but never imagined Angelus would pounce on her offer. Had she been
wrong about him, as she had been about Reilly? Surely not! How could she make
the same mistake twice in one lifetime?

"Are you coming or not?" Angelus challenged her.

"I… yes." Buffy swallowed hard as she forced her legs to walk. Her body
was screaming to stop this charade, but her heart was already ruling her head.

"Where are we going to go?" Buffy asked nervously.

"I think we can find a quiet, dark place where we can start your
lessons." Angelus said continuing to look in front of him as he led Buffy
away from where they had been sitting.

"Lessons?" Buffy cried out.

"Yes, dear. I want you to know just how to please me as well as what
will please you before we actually join our bodies." Angelus explained as he
finally found his destination.

"Why can you not just do it?" Buffy groaned.

"Because, I'm not a cad. I am a gentleman. I want to make sure you know
exactly what it is you are requesting of me." Angelus pulled her to the dark
corner where he saw no one. He was pleased that the sun had started down and
the fire works would start shortly. This would give him the perfect
opportunity to do things to her yet no one would hear a sound if she should
get loud.

Seating Buffy down on the ground in front of him, he sat up on his knees
as he reached out to cup her face in his hands and began to kiss her.

Buffy felt as if she was on fire. He had certainly kissed her before,
but she knew there would be more to look forward to this time. Perhaps his
lessons tonight would ease some of the aching sensations she felt when he
left her. Or perhaps she would walk away wanting still more or nothing at all?

Buffy knew that she was taking an enormous risk. But it was better than
telling Angelus that she had gone completely naked to Reilly's bed hoping to
give him something that would bind them together. Instead of accepting her
offer, Reilly had rejected her, put her gown up to cover her body from his
view and instructed her to leave at once.

Three days later, he announced his engagement to Anya. Since that night,
she struggled with the question of whether her body was repulsive or Reilly
simply had no desire for her? She had to find the answer no matter what it
might cost her.
Chpt. 36

Alexander, Faith, Willow and William returned the blanket at their picnic
spot but saw that Buffy and Angelus had left.

"How odd? The fire works are about to start and Buffy is not here? She
loves the lights." Alexander frowned as he stared at the others.

"I'm sure she and Angelus are out mingling with the others." Willow
suggested but in the back of her mind she suspected they were out stealing
passionate kisses. She was not about to search for them this time. It was
time for those two to learn a hard lesson. She had warned them, and it was no
longer her concern.

"By the way, did you ever learn who won Cordelia's basket this year?"
Willow asked Alexander.

"I fear it was poor old Benjamin Copeland who succeeded this year."
Alexander chuckled.

"I declare, why do those boys fight over her?" Willow grunted in disgust.

"She is a lovely young girl, who happens to be a wealthy as well. Few
men care about much more than that." William gave his theory on it.

Willow stared at him for a brief moment before leaning her head back to
stare at the stars.

"What are you thinking about?" William whispered in her ear.

"I was actually looking at the stars." Willow felt a strange sensation
course through her body when his breathe touch her ears.

"They are a lovely lot." William commented.

"I'm going to check on mother and father." Faith announced as she stood
up.

"Then I shall escort you. I mean... since it is dark now and all."
Alexander glanced at William for any signs of refusal.

"Go on." William shrugged his shoulders.

After they walk off chatting to one another, William laid back on the
blanket to watch the stars.

"What are you doing?" Willow choked when she look at the picture he
presented.

"I'm getting a better view of your stars." William yawned.

"Huh?" Willow leant further back on her arms to see what he was trying
to explain.
"OH!" Willow exclaimed.

"You mean to tell me you have never laid down on grass and just stared
up at the stars?" William teased her.

"Not since I was, oh, maybe eight years old." Willow giggled.

"Do you really think Buffy and Angelus are mingling?" William asked her.

Willow turned to look at William. She was shocked to see how beautiful
his eyes really were. They appeared the color of the sky on a summer day.

"I suppose. I hope so." Willow admitted.

"I fear those two will be caught soon, then we will both be standing
next to them as they exchange vows." William sighed heavily.

"I would hate to see that." Willow replied.

"WHY?" William nearly choked.

"Because, Buffy fears marriage. She believes it to be slavery for women.
Once you are married, the man usually changes and becomes so possessive. Of
course, a man's life doesn't change much. They keep a mistress, some more
than one, and go out whenever they wish. But the poor woman is left at home
with a swollen belly and nothing more to do than manage the servants who,
inevitably, manage her." Willow answered with anger in her voice.

"DAMN! Women on this side really are fighting to be independent."
William laughed.

"What is so funny? It is true." Willow said with a sideways glance at
William.

"I'm afraid you are right, at least partially. I have seen that scenario
before, but not all couples are like that. I've also seen the complete
opposite, men who stay loyal to their wives and share their dreams." William
picked a piece of grass next to him.

"Other than Buffy's parents, I have never seen a truly happy and loyal
couple. My parents are happy together, but they are also very selfish."
Willow commented and regretted the words she spoke the moment they came out.

"How are they selfish?" William stared at the back of her head. He hated
to admit it but, bossiness and self-righteousness aside; he was starting to
like her. She seems to have a brain, something quite unique these days.
Especially since convention frowns upon a women with a classical education
such as men.

"My father found a career that searches out the possibilities of worlds
before ours. My mother, of course, goes along with everything he desires. She
never thinks of her own feelings or mine. She just follows him around the
world, like a dog does his master." Willow trembled.

"I see how that must be rather hard on you, not being a consideration
much less a top priority." William heard the pain in her voice. He understood
her loneliness more than she could ever imagine.

"It's not as though I want a great deal of attention, but just a bit now
and then would be nice." Willow sighed.

"Someday you will find a man who wants only to you and little else."
William sat up and patted her hand closest to him.

He saw her stiffen from his innocent touch.

"I doubt it." Willow felt the tears stinging her eyes. "From your mouth
to Gods ears." Willow whispered softly.

William heard the soft second comment and felt his heart go out to her.

"It is starting." Willow cried out as she watched the first set of fire
works explode high in the sky.

William knew she wanted to change the subject. He felt a sudden urge to
reach out and take her in his arms and pull her against him. Instead he just
sat quietly beside her.
Chpt.37

Angelus had swiftly pulled her close and out of view of casual observers.

He lowered his head and slanted his mouth to hers, cutting off any
doubts, any more words. It was a hungry kiss, demanding and needy, and yet
strangely tender and warm. His lips were warm, firm, and strong and they knew
how to brush, feather, and slant over hers in just such a way that tingling
warmth radiated through her.

As he deepened the kiss and the urgency of it leapt through her, she
tightened her arms instinctively around his neck, and realized faintly that
his hands were stroking up and down her back. He caressed her shoulders,
drawing her in closer and closer under the spell of pleasure.

The moment her lips parted, his tongue swept inside her mouth. His mouth
locked on hers, as his tongue boldly licked hers, flicking over it in smooth,
light strokes that filled her with such heat her senses spun. She clutched at
him, a whimper in the back of her throat, her fingers digging into his strong
shoulders.

As his tongue played with hers, he felt his own need hardening. Buffy
tasted better than whiskey-more like wine, like pure, potent strawberry wine.
She strained against him, returning kiss for kiss, her mouth sweet and
yearning. He heard her mew like a kitten as the kiss became more insistent,
deeper still, and his muscles bunched with tension as her tongue darted
forward again in a timidly enticing dance that made him groan.

"You are truly good at this Buffy, very good." Angelus whispered.

"So are you," she whispered, and he chuckled, drawing out the kiss and
intensifying it. He began to stroke her body in smooth, gliding caresses that
made her tremble provocatively against him.

Angelus heard the fire works shattering behind them. He was not sure if
this was the right place to take her virtue. Hell, he knew it was not the
right time. Yet here he was lying on top of her, kissing, stroking, her in
away that could only lead to one thing.

He wanted to continue this game they played, but found he could not. He
sensed that what Buffy wanted from him was not as simple as she made it
sound. No, he sensed that she had been rejected and this was her way of
proving that she was worthy of desire. He wanted to make love to her, but he
also wanted it to be in a proper place where there would be less risk of
being caught.

Buffy felt him pull away and sensed his mind had changed about taking
her virginity.

"What?" Buffy moaned as their lips separated.

"I can not do this. Not here." Angels sat up on his knees, running his
hands through his hair.

"WHY NOT?" Buffy cried out as her face burn red from the heat he had
created in her.

"Because, darling, I care too much for you. I fear that once we complete
this bargain you will no longer look at me with the same respect." Angelus
half explained.

"Are you serious?" Buffy felt her chest tighten at the look that was
shining in his eyes.

"I'm... afraid so." Angelus gulped hard as he fought to control the
situation and to stop this madness. He knew that he would kick himself for
this later. For now, though, he had to be the strong one. He had to think of
her future and what could become of it, if this became common knowledge or
worse she became pregnant with his child.

"You... you do not want me?" Buffy felt the tears stinging her eyes and
her eyes showed the hurt she felt.

"I WANT you so bad this is killing me. I just do not want to hurt you."
Angelus pleaded with her.

"You're lying. Angelus, you sleep with women from whorehouses, but you
won't sleep with me? What is wrong with this picture? I'm just as willing as
they are...except I'm not asking for money." Buffy cried out in anger.

"That is just it, Buffy. You're not a whore. You weren't born to that
kind of world. Don't you understand; those women are forced into such work by
circumstance. I will not let you do this to yourself." He reach out and
stroked her cheek. He felt the wetness where her tears had escaped and slid
down her face.

"YOU have no right to choose for me. If I want to sleep with you or any
other man I will do so." Buffy's chin lifted up and he saw the strong
stubborn side of her.

"You're talking crazy now. You should wait until marriage before you
give away such a special gift." Angelus replied with a weak smile.

"OH...but what about your gift? How many times have you shared your
little gift?" Buffy snapped with a sarcastic smile.

"That is not fair." Angelus replied.

"NO! Then stop telling me that I should make a choice you discarded long
ago. I hate the way men expect women to act and yet set a completely opposite
standard for themselves. I hate.... I hate...YOU." Buffy felt her anger boil.
Sitting up she shoved him on his backside and stood up. Staring down at him,
she saw his shock over her reactions.

"You do not mean that." Angelus moaned.

"Yes, I do. I hate you. I do not want to see you ever again. I will do
what I want and with whom I choose." Buffy vowed as she started to walk away.
'

"Stop it Buffy." Angelus recovered from his earlier shock and jump to
his feet.

"Stop what?" Buffy called out to him as she continued walking away.

Angelus jogged to catch up with her.

"Buffy, stop." Angelus reach out and grab her shoulder.

She shoved his hand away from her and glared at him with icy eyes.

"Do not touch me ever again." Buffy warned him with tears shining in her
eyes.

"What is wrong with you? I am trying to do the honorable thing here and
you're upset with me for it. You make no sense." Angelus shook his head in
confusion.

"That's the problem with you, Angelus. You do not understand me. I told
you once, no several times, I do not plan to marry anyone and yet I never
once said I would not sleep with someone." Buffy's hands were firmly on her
hips.

"So... your telling me that you would sleep with me but would never
marry me?" Angelus cried out.

"Exactly. Except now I would not touch you if you were the last man on
earth." Buffy growled.

"He must have really hurt you to twist your thinking this much." Angelus
sighed.

Buffy froze. She knew who he meant by "He".

"What would you know of that?" Buffy snapped.

"I know that he lead you to believe that he loved you and wanted
marriage and instead chose his inheritance over you." Angelus revealed what
information he had learned.

"Yes...well... that still does not give you the right to know what he
did or did not do to me." Buffy stated but her voice shook with fear instead
of anger. He picked up on it.

"You wanted him and were willing to do anything to prove it. But he
rejected you." He saw her body tremble with the emotions that slipped across
her face as his instincts unraveled the mystery he had suspected since first
seeing Reilly.

"Maybe.... it does not matter." Buffy's head dropped.

"Yes, it does. Because now it has you thinking that you are not
beautiful or worthy enough to be married but perhaps... just perhaps you may
be good enough to whore around with. Buffy... I do not know Reilly well...but
I think he may have felt the same way I do. He knew that... that you are far
too better than you think yourself." Angelus fumbled with the right words to
say.

"Uh?" Buffy sobbed.

"You see, you were willing to give up a part of yourself to prove your
love. HE knew, as I do now, that you should not give up something like that
until you have committed yourself to a person and he to you. What I mean,
when I say committed, is marriage. You are beautiful and rare. I would hate
to think of you, sleeping with men to try to find or establish your worth.
Darling, once you start sleeping with men, you lose that value you once held.
You would wake up one day hating yourself for being so stupid." Angelus
exhaled deeply. He closed his eyes for a brief second, then opened them up to
see Buffy weeping quietly.

Angelus stepped closer to her.

"Buffy, I'm sorry if you think I do not want you... because I do. I
want you more than I have ever wanted anyone or anything. You are a jewel to
treasure. I do not want to share you with anyone or lose your value. I want
you. If you want... I will meet you somewhere later tonight.... and I will
make love to you... but that will not prove how much I love you. I will do
it in spite of my love for you, if this is what you truly want." Angelus
heard the words come out of his mouth and saw the way her head bolted up and
the shock in her eyes.

"I mean it. I will come to you, make love to you." Angelus repeated.

"Did you just say that you love me?" Buffy blinked a few times.

"Yes, I did. I do." Angelus felt his tears stinging his eyes as the
feelings he had grappled with for the last week were exposed to the world. He
had not known for sure what it was he had felt but now it has a name. LOVE.
He loved her. He had no doubt that he would always love her.

"You love... me." Buffy felt goose bumps run up and down her body.

"Yes, do you love me?" Angelus held his breath as he waited for her
answer.

"I do, I love you too." Buffy squealed as she threw her arms around him.

They held each other tightly and cried as they had felt the strong
current of emotions flowing between them.

Neither cared if anyone was looking for them or if they were caught.
They were savoring this moment in their life. Painting this memory in their
mind for later years in their life.

Chapter 38

As the fireworks ended, Willow and William began to wonder if the ardent
couple would ever return to the group.

"I fear they will be the death of me." Willow sighed.

"I know what you mean." William chuckled as he stood up; he began to
help her fold the blanket she had brought for them to sit on.

"Where could they be?" Willow squinted her eyes as she search the darken
area. She saw a few people she recognized walk past them.

"You know, I'm starting to think that these two want to be caught."
William shook his head in disgust.

"What?" Willow gasped.

"Look at how often either you or I have stumbled upon them. They play a
dangerous game that could cost them their freedom. Why take the chance; if
they do not want to deal with the consequences should they be caught?"
William explained. He had been giving this some thought since the last time
he helped Angelus arrange a quick moment with Buffy.

"I see your point; however, I think they are both merely too stubborn to
realize the possibility of someone less accommodating stumbling upon their
secret. I fear these two believe they can beat fate." Willow answered with a
weak smile on her face.

"What would they do without us, red?" William chuckled as he shared her
frustration about the couple.

"I shudder to think." Willow giggled.

"How about we walk around together as though we are merely two people
sharing a sweet moment. Of course, you and I know we will be looking for
Buffy and Angelus?" William offered his arm.

"I think that would be lovely. Besides, I hear the pond is lovely at
this time of the night." Willow bit down on her lip from laughing.

William stared into her eyes for a brief second before picking up the
basket and allowing her to give him a false tour of the area. As they walked
side by side, he began to reconsider his earlier opinion of the saucy little
redhead who smelt of strawberries. He began to notice the way her eyes
changed as she spoke of different topics. He also noted the way she seemed to
waltz as she walked next to him. There was something magical about her. He
was even moved by the sound of her laughter. She seemed to open a door in his
heart that he had long since thought barricaded.

******************************************************************************
Buffy walked by Angelus' side. She was thrilled beyond words. He had
confessed his true feelings for her. She had, in return, done the same. Now
all they had to get past was her fear of marriage. She had at least got him
to give into her ideas of love outside of marriage. She felt victorious; she
conquered him.

Angelus walked silently alongside Buffy. He knew he had been hasty in
his agreement to make love to her before marriage. Then once he had heard of
his declaration of love returned, he knew that he would make love to her. He
also knew that once he made love to her, she would never, ever step to
another man's bed. He would find a way to persuade her that she belonged to
him an no other, and that they should be married.

******************************************************************************

Reilly Finn stood by his wife's bedside. He stared down at the once
beautiful and vibrant woman for whom he had given up so much. He knew in his
heart that he had not been her first choice for a husband, but like him she
had bowed to her parent's wishes.

They had both suffered long enough. Picking up the large fluffy pillow
by her head he leaned down and placed a soft delicate kiss on her cheek. She
did not move a muscle. He hated to watch her suffer. She deserved to leave
this world with as little pain as necessary. The doctor had told him earlier
that day it could be months or even years before her death. He could not wait
that long. She did not deserve to wait that long either.

He said a silent prayer, then took the pillow, covered her sleeping face
and shoved down as hard as he could. She barely struggled against him. Then
he counted the seconds until she no longer moved at all. He then took the
pillow and set it back next to her head.

He then took one last look at her face. She seemed to be at peace. He
knew that what he had done would be considered murder by some. In his heart,
he justified it as mercy. He knew her fears about waiting for death to
finally come for her. He merely sped up the inevitable process. She had been
dying; now, she is dead, gone from this harsh world.

Now he could move on with his life. He could, at last, find his own
peace. He knew that once he held Buffy in his arms again, he could breathe
again. For the past two years he felt as if he had been holding his breathe.
Dying day by day. Now he was reborn.
