Summary: Southern Belle Buffy Summers meets Angelus Donavon, her handsome new
neighbor. They are instantly attracted to each other.
Buffy knelt down to pluck one of the new roses then placed it in the basket with the other flowers she had chosen. She liked picking flowers for her parents parties. Usually, it was the only way she was able to participate without messing something up. She heard a familiar voice coming from across the yard calling, "Buffy! Buffy!"
"Over here!" Buffy shouted.
"Hello!" Willow held her hand over her chest as she heaved
for air.
Buffy wondered what had excited Willow to the degree that
she ran all the way to the gardens.
"What's wrong now?" Buffy frowned at her childhood friend.
"Nothing. I just wanted to come to check on you," Willow
responded with a hurt expression.
"I'm sorry, Wil. I didn't mean to sound so grumpy," Buffy
smiled softly toward her.
"It's okay. I know you have not been feeling well, so I
wanted to check on you. Your Mom said I would find you out here."
Willow looked around the fabulous garden the Summers' had
created. It amazed her that Buffy's mother, Joyce Summers, always kept her
garden alive, no matter how severe the weather.
"The BIG PARTY is tonight," Buffy said as she rolled her
eyes with disgust.
"What's wrong? I thought you loved your parents' parties?"
Willow asked.
"I usually do but not this time. They say this one is to
get to know our new neighbors, but I'm not stupid. I know the real reason is to
find a suitable husband for me." Buffy's hands trembled with anger at the
thought of their obvious subterfuge.
"You are only seventeen, what's the big hurry?" Willow
chuckled. She walked to the marble slab, which had been fashioned so people
could sit while enjoying the garden.
"That's what I keeping asking," sighed Buffy as a sad
expression came into her eyes. "I mean I feel as if they are in a hurry to rid
themselves of me." Buffy's voice trembled with unshed tears, but she refused to
cry until she gained the privacy of her own room.
"I know your wrong about those fears." Willow patted
Buffy's shoulder for support.
"Why am I wrong?" Buffy questioned.
"You are wrong because your parents adore you. They think
you are the reason the sun sets and the moon shines. Perhaps they just fear you
might pick the wrong sort of husband if they don't help you find the right one."
Willow frowned. She wondered if this made any sense to Buffy?
"I think I see your point. However I don't want a husband
who merely has the perfect qualities, I want a husband who makes me feel as if I
am the only woman in the world," Buffy sighed heavily.
"I think every woman wants that." Willow giggled.
"Do you think I will ever find a man like that?" Buffy
asked with a gleam of hope in her eyes.
"If you do, I hope he has a brother for me." Willow
teased.
"Me too," agreed Buffy as they fell into laughter.

"I just don't understand why we have to attend this thing!"
Angelus cried out in anguish toward his mother. He hated formal dinners and
parties. Every mother he came in contact with would throw her eligible daughter
in his face. If he wanted a wife, he would pick one on his own.
"Angelus, we are new in this city. It would not hurt to
meet our new neighbors and their friends. It is also a great opportunity for you
to make more business acquaintances. You must get out more, son. Come now,
you're not growing any younger." Angeline Donovan-Wainwright encouraged her
eldest son to see things from her point of view.
"I understand the business aspect, but you know as well as
I do that the mothers will be throwing their unwed daughters in my face. You
would think my reputation alone would stop them, but NOOO! All that matters is
that I am a wealthy landowner. Its horrible." Angelus covered his eyes with his
hand; his head was beginning to hurt just from the thought of attending another
boring party.
Angeline smiled proudly at her son as she said, "I assure
you that your looks, in addition to your fortune, have something to do with your
popularity."
Angelus was the eldest of her children. Angelus' birth
father had died a month before he was born. Barely out of the yearlong
mourning, Angeline had been shocked to find herself attracted to a near stranger
with a son the same age as her own. Yet Joseph Wainwright proved a loyal
husband, devoted father and smart businessman.
Once they were married she had raised her son along with
his, William Wainwright. It worried her as the years passed without adding to
their family. Then just when Angeline had given up hope of having more children,
their daughter was born. Faith was an exceptional child. She dealt with the
teasing and roughhousing her older brothers inflicted upon her. It quickly
became apparent that she would be something of a tomboy.
Luckily for her parents, once Faith turned thirteen her
body began to change causing Faith to take more of an interest in her appearance
and behavior. Yet around her fifteenth birthday, Faith began to show signs of
being a little more than her parents had bargain for. Faith was quite aware of
her sensual body and dark smoldering brown eyes. Soon William and Angelus were
constantly fighting back the boys and men attempting to seduce their young
sister.
"Besides, Faith will need your help. She dreads these
parties as you do, but unlike you her insecurity around strangers leads her to
fear them." Angeline knew emotional blackmail was unfair, but she also knew it
would get Angelus to join them.
"Mother, you are a wicked lady." Angelus shook his finger
at her.
"With a wicked son." Angeline laughed.
"Very well mother, I shall attend. But I warn you I will
leave at the first opportunity." Angelus said with a smirk.
"Very well." Angeline agreed to the compromise.
"Go find your sister and tell her it is time for her to prepare for the party." Angeline put down her sewing and headed to her husband's study to remind him that he, too, must attend the festivities.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Buffy finally entered the scene she saw familiar faces
around every room. She couldn't resist the urge to yawn. This was not her idea
of fun anymore. What had happen to the excitement she once felt when at last
she was granted permission to stay up and dance the night away? When did the
gossip stop sounding curiously fun and turn instead to horrible mud throwing?
Why was she not curious to who was dressed in what?
Where had all the fun in her life gone, she wanted to
cry out to the room full of people?
"There you are." She turned her head slightly and put
on her "I'm so happy" face.
"Hello." Buffy replied with a joyous tone.
"I've been dying to see what you chose to wear."
Cordelia Chase walked up to her hostess' daughter.
"So now my dress is the topic of each evening." Buffy
glared at her archenemy. That was the best way to describe Buffy history with
Cordelia.
Buffy had tried to win over Cordelia for years, but
stopped once she saw that it was a useless effort. Then, instead of Buffy
chasing Cordy's dress, she began to step on it, hoping someday to make Cordy's
life a living hell. She would never understand why a girl as lovely as Cordy
had to be so cruel and selfish? Nor did she care at this point.
"You wish." Cordelia rolled her eyes and placed a
sarcastic smile on her face.
"I'm afraid you wouldn't like what I wish for."
Buffy's eyes stayed steady as she challenged Cordy to utter another word.
"Very well." Cordy sighed with a bored expression on
her face as she stepped away.
Willow had been approaching the girls when she noticed
the look of disgust on Buffy's face and decided to wait until Cordy exited. She
knew how much the two hated one another. She once tried to get them to work out
their differences, but then Cordy had to do something so horrible that not even
Willow could stop Buffy's hatred of the brunette. No one really cared for Cordy,
not even her parents.
"I see your best friend extended her greetings."
Willow teased Buffy.
"Yes! I can always count on her to remind me of my
failings." Buffy bit down hard on her tongue to keep from crying. It wasn't
that she wanted to cry because Cordy said anything to her, but it was from
remembering how hurtful Cordy could be. She had been one of those singled out
for Cordy's exceptional wrath and jealousy.
"Don't say that. You know as well as I do that Cordy
may be a bitch but she hurts herself more than anyone else." Willow sighed as
she watched Cordelia start her usual pandering to the wealthier families.
"I think I could hurt her worse." Buffy's hands rolled
up in tight fists at her sides.
"Now, now. Calm down." Willow patted her on the back
gently.
"So, who is here tonight?" Buffy changed the subject.
She wasn't going to let Cordy ruin her evening. She knew that when that
happened, then Cordy was the winner.
"Everyone. I swear I have never seen so many people in
one place before. I can't believe that new neighbors would bring such a crowd."
Willow frowned. Exactly who were these new neighbors?
"You would think your parents invited the Queen of
England." Willow chuckled.
"She probably did send a invitation." Buffy cracked a
smile.
"I see she can still smile." Alexander Harrison
responded.
"Alex!" The girls said in union as the handsome young
man approach them.
"You two are still the prettiest women in the county."
Alex kissed each of them on the cheek before stepping back to look at the
beautiful dresses they had donned for the party.
"I declare that is an unexpected color you're wearing
Willow." He wasn't use to her wearing anything but pink. Her mother had assisted
that pink was the most appropriate color for her dark red hair. After a year of
this consistent color, Willow, finally got her permission to try something else.
Tonight she wore a soft lime green colored dress that made her eyes look darker
than usual.
"Thank you!" Willow blushed. She wasn't use to being
complimented often.
"What about me?" Buffy pretended to pout.
"You look lovely in anything you wear. Dirt mud brown
couldn't steal your beauty." Alexander's eyes twinkled.
Willow felt her heart flutter at the way he stared at
Buffy. She often wondered while growing up with these two, if Alexander would
ever notice her the way he always noticed Buffy?
"You flatter me." Buffy popped open her fan and began
to wave it. Alexander knew she was teasing him.
"If you only knew what else I want to do to you."
Alexander thought to himself.
"So why was I asked to attend this occasion?"
Alexander swiftly changed the subject before beginning to mumble like an idiot.
Whenever he was near Buffy, he always seemed to do everything wrong. Although
he had never voiced his true feelings for her, nor would he ever unless she gave
him reason to believe she might return them, he knew this was due, in part, to
the fact that he worshiped the ground she walked on.
"The Wainwrights, a family from England, has purchased
the Lancaster lands as well as a few small businesses in the county. It seems
they are a wealthy family who came to America to follow their dreams of an even
better day." Buffy repeated the exact words she had heard her mother say while
reading the letter that Aunt Lucinda had sent her.
"They almost sound like royalty." Alexander's eyes
widen.
"You would think." Buffy made a sound in her throat
that let Alexander know that someone was approaching so he might watch what he
said.
"Hello, darling; I'm glad to see you finally made it."
Joyce Summer gave Alexander a motherly hug before stepping back to look him up
and down.
"Thank you, Mrs. Summers." Alexander nearly blushed.
Buffy's mother always made him long for a mother as sweet as she. Instead he had
a wicked stepmother only ten years his senior. He was quite relieved that she
had talked his father into moving to Boston, where her family was located.
"You're welcome. I hope you will be staying in town
from now on. I fear all your traveling will cause you to find some lucky girl
never return to us." Joyce teased him. She thought of Alexander as the son she
never had. He was a sweet boy who grew up with a harsh father and a mother who
had drunk herself to death at an early age. She knew most people feared he would
become a replica of his father, but she knew Alexander would prove them wrong.
"I believe your wish is granted, at least for now. I
will be staying for some time. My father is taking care of the business from now
on." Alexander explained.
"Good. You deserve a rest." Joyce patted him softly on
the shoulder before turning to look at her daughter.
"You behave tonight, all three of you." Joyce gave a
steady glare before placing a sweet smile back on her face.
"Yes, mother." Buffy nodded her head.
A friend then pulled Joyce away and all three began to
laugh. They knew Joyce was still a bit disappointed in them for drinking too
much champagne and retching outside for nearly an hour. Even though this had
happen nearly three years ago, she still reminded them of it often.
"Well, I just heard a large flutter of women
swooning." Alexander had heard the commotion in the far side of the room and
knew that it meant fresh meat had just arrived.
Buffy and Willow turn to see and both felt their
hearts tremble as the Wainwrights entered the house.
The Wainwrights had entered the house and were shocked to
see so many attending a party in their honor.
"It is nice to see you again." Joyce stepped up to
Angeline and shook her hand. Joyce had rode to their home a week earlier to
obtain their permission this gathering to get to know everyone.
"As well as you." Angeline said with a smile equal to
that of her hostess.
"Joyce, this is my family. The man who constantly
wears a frown is my darling husband, Joseph." Angeline glanced up at the man
next to her.
Joseph who was normally a very quiet sort couldn't
help but smile at his wife's teasing.
"This was so very kind of you Mrs. Summers." Joseph
was impressed with the number of people as well as the expense spared for this
party.
"It is the least I can do. I have lived here all my
life. The Lancaster's were my godparents. I know they would want me to do this."
Joyce explained.
"They were very lucky neighbors as I feel we will be,
too." Angeline replied.
"Here on my right is my eldest son, Angelus Donavon.
The young gentleman behind him is our dear William Wainwright, and last but not
the least of all, our jewel, Faith Wainwright." Angeline was pleased to see all
her children showing smiles on their faces as she announced them.
"It is a pleasure to meet all of you. I'm afraid my
daughter is lost in the crowd with friends, but I see my husband is making his
way toward us." Joyce saw Rupert striding across the crowded room to assist his
wife.
"A pleasure to meet you." Rupert said as he came up
and shook each of their hands.
"I thought if you would like you could get something
to eat and drink before your ears are talked off." Joyce pointed toward the
large buffet style tables filled with every kind of finger food and dessert
possible.
"That is very kind of you." Joseph said with big eyes.
His stomach growled letting them know he had not eaten before coming to the
party.
"I'm sure before you leave this evening you will at
least know all the faces of the people here in Liberty." Joyce relaxed as she
observed her other guests would be gracious enough to let the Wainwrights eat
before descending upon them.
******************************************************************************
Angelus wasn't sure how long he had been able to
escape to the corner without someone attempting an introduction, but he was
relieved to find some quiet time. He noticed that the sky had turned dark as he
gazed through the window. It was then that he noticed the garden outside the
window. He began to think of the night air and the openness of the sky and felt
the need to make his way outside.
Walking in the direction of the garden, he took long
deep breaths of the clean, cool, night air. This was his favorite part of the
parties, finding an escape.
The flowers seem to carry a sweet smell to which he was
unaccustomed. It was pleasing and relaxing. After a moment, he caught the scent
of vanilla. It was quite sensual.
As he walked around the lavish roses, he accidentally
collided with a body.
"I am so sorry." Angelus began, feeling his senses
stirring.
"No! I'm sorry." Buffy replied swiftly. She knew it
had not been his fault for bumping into her. People didn't normally sneak out to
the gardens just to scare the butterflies out of them. She had hoped to find
some peace out here; her head had started to spin from her last glass of
champagne. She didn't want her mother aware of her excessive drinking.
"I'm afraid I did not think anyone would be out here."
Angelus began to speak to the mysterious stranger.
"Nor did I." Buffy agreed with a frown on her face.
"What's wrong?" Angelus could barely see her face in
the moonlight but saw enough to know she seemed worried.
"I'm afraid I had too much to drink. I think my
stomach is trying to punish me." Buffy confessed as she walked to the marble
seat and sat down gently.
"Are you going to be sick?" Angelus asked with sincere
concern in his voice.
"I hope not." Buffy answered softly.
"Lean your head toward your knees." Angelus said as he
followed and sat next to her.
Buffy opted to try his advice. Once she bent her head
down for a few seconds, the dizziness had faded. She straightened slowly.
"Thank you." Buffy gave him a weak smile.
"Why did you drink so much?" Angelus asked.
"I didn't mean too, I assure you. I just love the
taste of champagne and there wasn't much else to do in there." Buffy looked
toward the house with a sad expression.
"I would think a young woman like yourself would be
thrilled to attend such a party." Angelus had not expected her answer to his
question.
"I'm afraid I'm not like most girls then. Besides, we
all know the real reason that young women like myself attend these dreadful
things. They are hunting for husbands." Buffy's voice was filled with contempt.
"And you do not want to hunt for one?" Angelus
inquired. He felt his heart starting to race with each word she spoke. This girl
sounded like a female version of himself. It was incredible. He knew she was
beautiful although he still could not see all of her face. Her voice revealed
grace, charm, and class.
"Arggh! NO! I feel that true love is not to be sought
out. It comes naturally." Buffy expressed her theory on finding true love. She
wondered why she was revealing her thoughts with a complete stranger?
"I like your point of view." Angelus agreed with her.
"But what if it doesn't ever come?" Angelus decided to test her theory.
"Oh, it will come. You might not see it for what it
really is and perhaps you will let it pass you by, but then I would then say you
unlucky at love." Buffy chuckled despite the pain in her stomach.
"Unlucky, eh?" Angelus chuckled as well.
"Who really even knows the definition of pure love?"
Buffy sighed heavily.
Angelus knew at this point that she had been hurt.
Not just hurt, but also crushed. Someone had broken her heart. It was the only
reason he could think of that would explain why she was disgusted with the
thought of chasing down a husband.
"I must confess my parents seem to have something
pretty damn close to it." Angelus thought of his parents' behavior and respect
for one another. He could only wish for half of what they enjoyed if he ever
decided to settle down.
"Mine too." Buffy sounded disappointed.
"Does that upset you?" Angelus looked toward the girl
whose face was still shadowed by the night sky.
"No, it just makes it harder for someone like me to
accept the fact that I will never have even half of what they have." Buffy's
answered as she trembled from the cool breeze that blew in, out of nowhere.
"No one can say for sure what the future holds. I
think we all want to master are own fates, but there is a power out there that
is stronger. I think we must get through each day the best we can and hope for a
better one." Angelus leaned back as he put his hands behind him on the cold
marble slab to support himself.
Buffy looked up toward the sky.
"You do have a valid point." Buffy sighed wearily.
"Always." Angelus teased her.
"May I ask to whom I am speaking in the dark?"
It had just occurred to Buffy that she didn't even
know the man with whom she was sharing so much information. She realized the
champagne and collision had caused her to forego the proper greetings, but, at
the moment, she didn't really care.
"I'm sorry, my name is Angelus Donavon." Angelus
answered her as he looked up at the night sky.
"It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Buffy Summers. Are
you new to the area?" Buffy frowned. She did not recognize the Donavon surname.
"Actually I believe I am your new neighbor." Angelus
had nearly choked when she announced she was the missing daughter of his
hostess.
"But you said your last name was Donavon." Buffy
turned to look at him closer. It was really too dark to see his full face. What
she could see was enough to make her heart flutter. Why had she not looked at
him closer until this moment?
"I'm the son of my mother's first husband. Joseph
Wainwright is my stepfather; he has raised me since I was about a year old."
Angelus explained his connection to his family.
"Oh." Buffy replied. She began to hear voices cooing
toward them. She wasn't sure why but she started to panic.
"We should go." Buffy jumped up from the seat. She
regretted this action as her entire body started spinning uncontrollably once
again.
Angelus anticipated this the instant she froze.
Standing up, he reached out to grab her waist before she hit the ground.
"I'm feeling funny again." Buffy cried out in misery.
"Where can we go so no one will see you?" Angelus
found himself wanting to protect her from a scandal. He didn't know much about
this town, but he knew enough about people in general to know that if anyone saw
the Summers girl out here in the dark with him there would be talk.
"The stables are around the back of the house." Buffy
knew there was no way to get back inside the house with out anyone seeing them.
"Here let me help you." Angelus placed one of her arms
around his shoulder while he led her toward the stables.
"This is ...so ...embarrassing." Buffy felt tears
stinging her eyes.
"Not to worry," Angelus fought back the urge to laugh.
If only she knew how many times he had gotten this drunk, she wouldn't be
ashamed.
Angelus saw the large building and easily hurried her
inside. Once he shut the door behind them, he then began to wonder if being
alone in the stables had been the wisest choice he could have made.
Angelus felt Buffy starting to slip from his hold.
"Hold on." Angelus whispered to her.
Buffy felt weak. Her head was spinning, her heart was
racing, and her skin tingled where their bodies made contact.
"I feel funny." Buffy moaned into the crook of his
shoulder.
"I know...here." Angelus saw a small stack of hay in
the corner. Turning to look back toward the door, he judged that if someone
should come in they could not be seen.
Angelus gently placed her down on the hay. He heard a
soft sigh slip between her lips as she reclined.
"Are you okay?" Angelus bent down on one knee to get a
closer look at her. There was a small lantern in the center of the barn that
gave a bit of light in the stable.
"Yes," Buffy mumbled.
"I'm sorry." Buffy felt her stomach starting to calm
down. Lying flat on her back she felt her body starting to relax.
"For what?" Angelus bit down on his lower lip from
laughing.
"For making a fool of myself in front of you.
Its...well; it is not very ladylike of me." Buffy heard the muffled laughter he
was trying to hide from her.
"Oh!" Buffy swung her fist out into the air and hit
him squarely on the shoulder.
"OW! What was that for?" Angelus smiled.
"You find this humorous." Buffy felt her pride sting
briefly.
"No, it is just that I can relate to your pain. I have
washed my sorrows and regrets in a good glass of brandy one time too many."
Angelus explained his laughter toward her hardship.
"Oh." Buffy said with a small yawn.
"Are you tired?" Angelus asked. He didn't like the
sound of that. If she fell asleep how was he going to get her in the house
without anyone noticing?
He sat down next to her trying to formulate a plan to maintain her pride and dignity, not to mention prevent her good name from being forever tarnished. Yet as he leaned his head back on the hay he began to feel fatigued as well. It had been a long day; he would have never predicted ending up in a barn with his new neighbors' daughter.

Chpt. 4
Willow woke up with a start. Reaching out beside her she
felt for an
extra body. No one.
"Shit!" Willow swore under her breath.
Buffy hadn't return to her room. Where had she gone? Who was she with?
What was she thinking?
Willow snuck down the stairs, still in her dress from the previous
evening. Exiting through the back door, she began to look around the yard.
She wasn't sure why, but her instincts told her that Buffy was somewhere on
the grounds, but where?
She heard the low sounds of the servants starting a new day. She knew
that if anyone but she found Buffy it would start up a mess of gossip. It
wasn't that the servants didn't care about Buffy, it was just something
everyone did these days.
She was going to wring Buffy's neck when she found her. Her friend had
finally put that last nasty bit of gossip behind and was already starting on
something new. What in God's name could have been worth this?
She heard the sounds of horses. The stables? Of course! Buffy was
known to fall asleep in the stables.
Willow rushed across the yard and opened the barn door. It took her a
few seconds for her eyes to focus in the dimly lighted room. As the sun was
just starting to rise, she didn't have much by which to see.
"Buffy? Buffy?" She called out in a low whisper.
No response. She took a few more steps inside and began to search around.
Then as she turned the corner she heard something rustling around in the
hay followed with a low moan.
Willow prayed she was not about to walk up on a lusty couple that had
lost track of time.
"Buffy? Buffy?" Willow repeated.
"Ow...God!" Buffy began to sit up as she heard her name being called.
When she finally managed to open her eyes she felt a stinging sensation on
her skin. She had some how fallen asleep in the stables again? What had
happen to her? Then something moved next to her.
Buffy thought she might jump out of her skin as an arm found its way
around her waist. She choked back the scream building in her chest.
Hesitantly she looked behind her to see that she had not only fallen asleep
in the barn but hadn't done so alone.
"What have I done?" Buffy moaned with tears stinging her eyes.
"Buffy?" Willow repeated.
"Over here." Buffy ran her hands through her knotted hair.
Willow heard her voice and felt enormous relief. She was in the stables
and not in any kind of danger. Then when she found Buffy she found a man as
well.
"What is going on?" Willows hands sat upon her hips, as she demanded an
answer from her best friend.
"I don't know." Buffy picked up the hand of the stranger and put it down
gently beside herself.
Buffy was just about to stand when the stranger sat up abruptly scaring
the dickens out of the girls.
"What in blazes?" Angelus sat up as if he had been hit by lighting.
"I agree with him." Willow frowned at the couple.
"What time is it?" Angelus rubbed his sleep filled eyes.
"The sun is just rising." Willow snapped.
"What happen?" Buffy's stomach knotted up at the prospect of what might
have occurred between them.
"I think.... well...you were drunk. You were sick... and we heard voices
and didn't want people to find you in that state so we snuck in here. I guess
we fell asleep." Angelus explained. His throat was dry and hoarse.
"Was that all?" Buffy forced herself to look at him straight in the face.
"Yeah," Angelus frowned at her.
"Oh" Buffy exhaled deeply.
It was then that Angelus finally got a good look at her face. Through
their entire conversation last night, he had wondered what she might look
like. Now that he saw her, she was everything he had imagined and more.
Chpt. 5
"I do not mean to sound rude, but we need a plan to get you
to the house
and fast. Your parents might be sleeping in, but the servants are not."
Willow scolded them with a frustrated face.
"She is right." Angelus chewed on his lower lip as he tried to focus on
a solution to their little crisis rather than staring at the beautiful woman
with whom he had slept with yet not laid a hand upon.
"It is simple really. I will just walk to the house and go to my
bedroom," Buffy look at them with a calm expression.
Angelus and Willow gave each other a knowing look before turning their
attention back to her.
"Oh yes, a brilliant plan." Willow spouted out sarcastically.
"I know. Think Wills; I have often slept in the stables. No one will bat
an eye at the sight of me with hay in my hair. Now if they see Angelus
walking out with me, that might cause a few heads to spin." Buffy gave them
each a wide grin. She was extremely proud of her quick thinking.
"So the real problem is sneaking him out." Willow thought out loud.
Angelus looked back and forth between the two young women and noted they
carried on as though accustomed to solving problems such as these.
"I can just walk home." Angelus offered.
"NO!" They both shouted in union.
"Why not?" Angelus frowned at them.
"Because it is too far to walk." Buffy explained with a concern smile.
"Trust me I can handle a few miles." Angelus replied.
"Do you hear that?" Willow froze as she heard an approaching horse.
"Who could that be?" Buffy's smile turn into an instant frown as they
listened.
Angelus jumped to his feet, heading straight to the stable doors for a
peek outside. It took him a few seconds to recognize the rider.
"Oh shit!" Angelus declared then blushed as he realized that he had
cursed in front of the ladies.
"Sorry." Angelus apologized.
"Do not fret. I think we all feel the same." Willow joked with a half
laugh.
"Who is it?" Buffy exclaimed.
"My brother." Angelus sighed heavily.
"Why is he here?" Buffy asked.
"I would bet my fortune he has come to find me." Angelus shook his head
in disbelief.
"Willow go get him before he goes to the front door." Not giving Willow
time to consider her options, Buffy shoved her out the stable door with all
her might.
Willow began to walk in a speedy pace without actually running.
She watched as a fair-haired man began to dismount.
"Excuse me! Excuse me!" Willow called out to the stranger.
She prayed that he heard her half shout; once he knocked things could go
terribly wrong.
Chpt. 6
William Wainwright was not in a good mood this morning. His
sister had
woken him at the crack of dawn, informing him that their elder brother had
not come home the night before. He had tried to persuade her not to be overly
concerned about Angelus; however, he had not accomplished his goal. Faith had
pulled the covers from him and thrown a fresh pitcher of cold water on him
before threatening to tell their parents about his gambling debts unless he
searched for their brother at once.
He would never understand why everyone was so concerned about his
brother? Angelus was one of the luckiest bastards he had ever known. He
always had the better-looking mistress and acquired money as if it grew in
the garden.
In a matter of minutes, he dressed and began scrounging the local
taverns and hotels for his errant sibling. Of course no one had seen him.
Eventually, it dawned on him to try the Summers' plantation. It was the last
place anyone had seen him. Suddenly, William was unsure if Angelus had been
injured, robbed on his way home or had found a local girl and taken her for a
quick toss in the hay.
Just as he dismounted, he heard a feminine voice calling from a few
yards away. Turning his head, he saw a red headed young woman practically
running across the gardens trying to get his attention. His instincts told
him that Angelus had found some kind of trouble.
"Sir.... could you please help me." Willow exhaled deeply once she got
close enough that only he could hear her.
"I will try my best." William said, looking her over a few times before
allowing his eyes to stay above her chest.
"I'm afraid that your brother is here, but he is in a sticky situation.
If you would just follow me and do bring you horse." Willow ordered.
William rolled his eyes in disgust. Angelus didn't seem to know how to
avoid trouble when it came to women.
"What has he done now?" William's voice revealed his disappointment in
his brother.
"Nothing exactly. He was helping my friend last night and, well, they
fell asleep and perhaps made the matter much worse." Willow replied as her
eyes constantly scanned for signs of anyone who might be suspicious of why
she was out so early. Luckily, she saw nothing to worry about.
William followed the saucy red head to the stables. She opened the door,
and he followed her inside.
"Angelus what have you done now?" William exclaimed with an annoyed look
on his face.
He regretted the words the moment he saw the young lady who stepped out
from behind Angelus. He immediately understood why his brother took the risk
of spending the night. She was very lovely.
"I have done nothing, but I will explain everything later. Right now,
we need to get on your horse and ride swiftly." Angelus demanded.
"Fine." William knew there was no point in arguing once he saw that bull
headed look in Angelus' eyes.
William turned on his heel and marched out of the stables to retrieve
his horse.
Angelus approached Buffy with a crooked smile on his face.
"It was nice to meet you, Ms. Summers. I pray that if we should attend
another party together you do no repeat this episode with someone else."
Angelus was teasing her while at the same time lecturing her.
"Perhaps you can chaperone me." Buffy's eyes sparkled with mischief.
"Someone should. The next man might not be a gentleman like myself."
Angelus warned her.
"You are completely right, sir. I will try to keep my honor intact."
Buffy placed her hand over her heart, expressing a vow to him.
"Until we meet again." Angelus took her hand and placed it in his own.
Turning it over to reveal her knuckles he placed a soft kiss on them. Buffy
felt as though fireworks had just gone off in her head.
"Thank you for helping me." Buffy replied with a shaky voice.
"You are now indebted to me." Angelus teased her.
"I will agree with that challenge." Buffy's eyes shone with a passionate
glaze over them.
"It was nice meeting you, too...Willow was it?" Angelus turned his
attention to Buffy's friend who seemed to look at him with a suspicions glare.
"Yes, it was nice to meet you as well." Willow said in a polite voice.
Angelus walked away from the lovely girls and, checking to see if anyone
was nearby, jumped on the back of William's horse and rode away.
Buffy exhaled deeply.
"Okay, I want all the details," Willow demanded, shaking her finger at
Buffy.
"Once I have had a bath and a small breakfast, I will tell you
everything. Well, as much as I can remember." Buffy laughed.
Willow noted that Buffy's face was glowing like a Christmas tree. She
could only wondered whether or not this was a good sign.
Chpt. 7
Angelus stepped into the tub only to discover that the
water was hotter
than the devil's kitchen.
"Shit!" Angelus cried out as his skin began to turn a bright pink.
It took him a few seconds to brace himself for the steaming hot water to
cover the rest of his body as he sat fully down. Laying his head back
against the back end of the tub, he closed his eyes and waited for the water
to cool down.
"There you are!" William announced as he threw open the door and marched
inside.
"Have you heard of the word PRIVACY?" Angelus growled up at him.
"Have you heard the words "Keep your pants up"? William replied with a
sarcastic smile on his face.
"My pants were up the entire night, thank you. One might think you
believe me a man of little honor, sir. I remind you that not only are you my
brother but a man worth fighting." Angelus' eyes glared with anger.
"Come off it. You know as well as I do that you have bedded plenty of
women. Are you trying to tell me you've changed since we sailed across the
ocean?" William scoffed.
"I'm telling you that each woman, the number of whom, by the way, is
none of your business, I've joined for a night of illicit pleasure has always
been willing and available." Angelus chose his words wisely.
"Is this your opinion or their families?" William smirked.
"Oh for the love of God, what do you want from me?" Angelus grew
restless with their usual pissing contest.
"I want to know why you spent the night with our neighbors daughter?"
William asked with a serious expression on his face.
" I had slipped away to the gardens, and she came out during the party.
When she bumped into me, I realized she was 'three sheets to the wind'. She
was quite sick to her stomach when we heard voices approaching. I knew the
situation looked bad, so I carried her to the barn in the hope of saving her
reputation. While we waited until the coast cleared, she passed out. I guess
I followed her." Angelus yanked the soap from the adjacent table and began to
work up lather.
"So you're saying you didn't actually toss her around in the hay, then?"
William frowned.
"NO! If you truly consider yourself my brother, you will keep this
quiet. You know as well as I, that we do not need ANY of our names run
through the mud." Angelus eyes pleaded with him to be mature enough to handle
this situation with a closed mouth.
"I understand." William sighed heavily.
"Thank you." Angelus smiled weakly as he began to lather his body.
"So do you like the little bit?" asked William, referring to the Summers
girl.
"She is very nice; she seems to have a gentle soul about her. That is
another reason I did not want to see her hurt. I fear she has already been
hurt enough." Angelus thought back to the way she sounded when she talked
about love. Her voice seemed to carry the hurt she felt deep down.
"I meant, are you interested in her?" William stared at his brother
closely.
"I like her well enough." Angelus shrugged his shoulders.
"Are you going to court her?" William chewed on his lower lip.
"NO! Why would you think of such a thing?" Angelus gasped.
"Our sister and mother excluded, you have never, and I repeat, never,
shown such protectiveness toward a woman." William pointed out.
"So, perhaps I have never met a woman worthy of my protection." Angelus
replied. He looked up at William and wondered why his brother was the least
bit concerned about his feelings toward the Summers girl?
"Why, are you interested in her?" Angelus felt his stomach knot up at
the prospect of William courting the sweet girl with whom he spent the night.
"NO! but I wouldn't rule out playing with the saucy red head." William
teased.
"Willow? Really?" Angelus was surprised at William's answer.
"Why not Buffy?" Angelus asked, curious as to why he cared to know the
answer.
"Because any woman who has spent a night with you is not worth the
effort. Sure, you didn't fuck her brains out, but I HAVE learned my lesson
well when it comes to women who have fallen for you." William answered with a
deep pain in his eyes.
Angelus looked down at the bar soap he held in his hands and knew
William was right. William tried for the attention of a young lady Angelus
had carelessly discarded. It had been a disaster for William and the girl.
William had not spoken to him for nearly a year after the girl had foolishly
compared William's attributes unfavorably to those of Angelus. Although
Angelus had nothing to do with her hurtful words, William still held a deep
grudge toward his older brother. For his part, Angelus had not realized that
William harbored feelings, deep or otherwise, for the childish girl.
Angelus knew he couldn't change the girl's mind about William and
thought his brother better off without her. Instead to ease his brother's
pain, the normally discrete Angelus had made no secret of his temporary
relationship with the girl, thus ruining her chance of a decent marriage.
Angelus felt no guilt for his actions. He would not tolerate anyone hurting a
member of his family. He was extremely protective of the lot.
"What in blazes is that?" William broke the silence as they each turn to
the sound of the noise coming up the stairs.
In seconds the door was burst open yet again, but this time it was their
sister, Faith, who entered with a horrible expression on her face.
Chpt. 8
Faith did not care that her brother was completely nude.
All she cared
about was his selfishness at staying out all night without letting them know
he was safe.
She knew that men saw things differently when it came to their own
behavior. She knew if it had been she who had done this, they would both
ruthlessly lecture her about her safety and precious reputation. Oh, but
when it came to them, she shouldn't give it a second thought. Well, she
thought otherwise and planned to inform them so in no uncertain terms.
"I think that you are a bull-headed, uncaring lout!" Faith roared, hands
on her hips and arms akimbo.
"You are a horrible stink head." Faith continued yelling hurtful names.
"Whoa! Calm down and, please, turn around." Angelus moved his hands to
cover his privates.
"Hurry!" Faith turn on her heels and looked the opposite way.
William chuckled under his breath as Angelus stepped from the tub and
drew a towel around his body. He saw the heated anger radiating from Angelus
as he looked at Faith's backside.
"Are you finished yet?" Faith sighed heavily.
"Yes, I am; and so are you." Angelus' replied with an angry stare.
"OH, no you don't. You are not going to look down on me, BIG BROTHER!"
Faith threw her finger in his face as she stepped closer to him.
"Remember your manners, young lady. You are not so big that I can't take
you over my knee." Angelus wanted to laugh at the situation but was tired and
exasperated with both of his siblings for their interrogation of him for
accidentally spending a night in the stables.
"I know how to behave Angelus. Do you?" Faith challenged him.
Taken aback, yet trying to calm his sister, Angelus replied, "Look, I
fell asleep accidentally. I had no intention of staying out all night."
"You know some people do make honest mistakes." Angelus looked in the
direction of William for support. Instead, he saw William grinning like a
cat as he watched the scene before him.
"That is true, sir, but I pray you do not make this mistake again."
Faith eased up a bit when she caught sight of Williams enormous smile.
"I promise to try not to." Angelus promised her.
"Very well. I accept your apology for causing me so much worry." Faith
exhaled deeply.
"Thank you. You are most gracious." Angelus was now teasing her.
Turning her attention to William, Faith asked, "What are you laughing
at?"
"I was just thinking how much you sound like mother when you scold us
so." William grinned.
"I take that as a compliment." Faith smiled proudly.
"Now, where were you?" Faith turn her attention back to her other
brother.
"I... I fell asleep in a barn." Angelus wondered how he would get out of
this one without exposing Buffy in the process. He never cared for lying, but
especially not to his sister.
"A barn?" Faith frowned up at him.
"Yes. I attempted to escape the party and went into the stables to check
out the Summers' stock and fell asleep." Angelus recovered quickly.
"Oh. Are they as lovely as ours?" Faith asked with a naive face.
William burst into laughter at that exact moment.
"What?" Faith snapped at William.
"Nothing... nothing at all." William held his stomach as the laughter
began to hurt his muscles.
"Yes, I would have to agree that at least one of them meets our
standard." Angelus knew where Williams mind had wandered. He had to force his
own laughter back down into his chest. He did not want Faith to know what had
occurred the previous evening; not that she was the sort to gossip but he did
not want her to judge Buffy unfairly.
"I also came up here to let you know that mother has invited the Summers
family over for a private dinner party tonight. She wants you to both cleaned
up and on time. The dinner begins at half past seven." She announced.
"What?" Both men said in union.
"You heard me. Mr. and Mrs. Summers and their daughter will be joining
us for dinner. Mother said this was the least she could do in return for the
lavish party they threw in our honor." Faith quoted.
"Oh." Angelus replied. Faith thought she caught a flash of panic cross
his face before it quickly returned to a smile.
"Remember, do not be late." Faith warned them both before leaving the
room.
"Oh, this will be the best evening I have had in some time." William
chuckled and began to whistle as he followed his sister from the room.
"You might enjoy it, but I fear not all of us will." Angelus said aloud
as he walked to his bed and collapsed for a well-needed nap.
Chpt. 9
Buffy felt as though she was walking on clouds the entire
morning. A
little after noon her parents arose from their long and well deserved rest.
She was surprised to hear her mother tell the cook not to prepare anything
for supper.
"Hello, mother." Buffy walked into the parlor where her mother had sat
down with a warm cup of tea.
"Hello, Buffy. How are you this morning?" Joyce smiled brightly at her
daughter.
"I'm feeling wonderful. Why did you tell Millie not to cook supper?"
Buffy sat across from her mother. Picking up the extra cup, she poured tea in
her cup, and then placed one cube of sugar with a drop of honey and cream in
it.
"Because we were invited to dine elsewhere." Joyce said as she sipped on
her hot tea.
"Where?" Buffy frowned.
"Angeline and Joseph Wainwright invited us last night. They are such
lovely people. I just hope everyone is as accepting of them as your father
and I are." Joyce smiled but her eyes showed a sign of fear.
"Why would anyone be cross with them? They just arrived?" Buffy asked.
"Because they are true blood English and Angeline's son is an heir to an
estate in Ireland. So of course, that puts some of our neighbors in a twist.
You must remember that the majority of our neighbors came from poverty. When
they arrived they had to work extremely hard to rise above that level. Some
are still very bitter over how badly they were treated in England." Joyce
shuddered at the memories that Rupert still kept buried inside. She was
blessed to have been born and raised here. Her parents however were from
England. Like her neighbors they left to escape the stringent social barriers
and start a new life of their own.
"I guess I keep forgetting where we all came from." Buffy sat her cup
down and then folded her hands in her lap.
"I want to hear about all the fun you had last night." Joyce stated as
she picked up her stitching.
"It was okay. I just danced, talked, and went to bed." Buffy said with
boredom.
"You didn't meet at least one young man that you fancied?" Joyce smiled
sadly.
She worried that Buffy would never get past her heartache. What happened
had not been entirely her fault. Still, Joyce knew that Buffy blamed herself
nonetheless.
"Not really. I guess, I'm just not in a hurry to leave you and father."
Buffy replied with a weak smile.
"Buffy, we are not in a rush to be rid of you. Oh, don't look at me like
that; I know how you think." Joyce smiled knowingly. She had suspected that
part of Buffy's depression these days was based on the fear that they were
trying to shove her out the door.
"Well, mother, tell me why do parents rush their daughters into marriage
but encourage their sons to wait? I mean it just is not fair." Buffy cried
out with a hurt look on her face.
"I think we fear, as parents, that our daughters will age dramatically
overnight and no decent man will want them. I am, however, pleased that you
are not rushing into marriage. I think it is very mature of you, and I
believe your father agrees with me." Joyce beamed.
"Truly?" Buffy gave a doubtful smile.
"Truly. Now should I send word that Willow will also be joining us this
evening?" Joyce knew that, since Willow's parents' departure to Egypt, the
girl spent most of her days alone. She thought it had been quite selfish on
the part of Willow's mother.
"Of course." Buffy replied.
"I will tell Willow; we need to dress in our finest for tonight." Buffy
offered.
"Thank you, Buffy. I want to say, once more, that we both are very proud
of you." Joyce reach out to gently squeeze Buffy's hand before releasing it
so she could leave the room.
Buffy knew her mother understood her pain and distance. Although her
father understood why she felt the way she did, he was still set on the
theory that once you fall off of a horse you jump back on again. She just
wasn't sure if she was strong enough to do such a thing.
Buffy was climbing the stairs when it finally hit; she was going to see
her hero tonight. At once, she felt all the miserable feelings leave with
just a thought of him. With a light bounce in her step, she slipped up the
stairs, eager to tell Willow where they would be dining this evening.
Joseph Wainwright stood in his den and re-read the letter before Angelus
entered.
"You called for me, father?" Angelus stood in the doorway, waiting to be
given permission to enter.
"Yes, son, I did. Come inside, please, and shut the door behind you."
Joseph replied with a gentle smile on his face.
Angelus often wondered if William would like their father as he aged.
They were almost identical in looks, except that Joseph had dark brown eyes,
the same as their sister.
"I just received news from your Uncle Gavin. It seems that he feels you
should return to Ireland, where he himself can teach you to run the family
estate. I, of course, believe it is your choice. I know that you do not
care much for your Uncle Gavin, but he does have one valid point. He
explains in his letter that if you do not want to accept your inheritance of
the estate, you should let him know so he may designate a new heir." Joseph
said in a calm tone.
Angelus knew how much Joseph hated the Donovans. They were constantly
bickering with his mother about his upbringing. Luckily, she had been blessed
with a second husband who would not cave to their demands.
"Basically, he is giving me an ultimatum." Angelus stated with cold eyes.
"That is how it appears. Of course, he is wise enough not to make a
blunt statement of the kind. But, you and I are quite correct in our
interpretation of what his letter does not state." Joseph chuckled.
"I must confess father, I have enjoyed my freedom and working by your
side all these years. I have made quite enough money without taking a penny
of the inheritance from my maternal family. Yet, a small part of me wonders
if I should leave such an estate in the hands of those greedy fools." Angelus
confided his fears to his father.
"I see where you are headed with this. I can see it is a difficult
decision for you." Joseph sighed. He had always admired the compassion in
one so young, not to mention the fact that he would inherit a title had not
caused him to act superior to his siblings or others. These things had
impressed him deeply.
"I have considered visiting them. Examining things personally before
making my decision, but I can't seem to find the will to leave. Why is that?"
Angelus asked with a frown.
"Perhaps because your heart is not in it." Joseph offered a suggestion.
"I think you may have hit the nail on the head, father." Angelus
chuckled bitterly.
"I think you have plenty of time to decide. I have not heard rumors that
your Grandfather's health is in danger at the moment. Take your time; follow
your heart and instincts." Joseph said supportively.
"I will." Angelus said firmly.
"So, what did you think of that grand affair last night?" Joseph asked.
Angelus felt his insides starting to twist. Why did everyone keep asking
him about last night? Didn't they have anything else to talk about?

Chpt. 11
Buffy took several hours to dress for dinner. Willow and
Kat, Buffy's
maid, watched as she threw nearly every dress she owned to the floor.
"I can't get Ms. Ferguson to create you a new design and sew it with in
the next few hours, so I suggest you pick one of these and soon." Willow
teased her best friend.
"I know. I just...well I'm not even sure why I'm so nervous. It is not
like I haven't been to dinner parties before." Buffy blew a piece of loose
hair away from her nose.
"Perhaps it has to do with the fact that you fancy Mr. Donavon more than
you want the rest of us to know." Willow continued to tease her.
"I do not." Buffy rolled her eyes.
"Kat, when was the last time you saw her like this?" Willow queried.
Kat looked between the two young women and knew her best course of
action was to remain silent. But when she caught sight of Ms. Buffy tapping
her foot nervously on the floor she couldn't do it.
"I fear Ms. Willow is not exaggerating ma'am. You haven't acted this
shook up since Master.... well, since he left." Kat stopped the name before
it slipped out. She knew the mere name of the man who had burned the heart of
her mistress could put her in a deeply sad mood for days.
"I want you both to know that I can handle hearing his name now. Reilly
Finn is no longer here; he left me. He decided I was not good enough to
marry, and I have dealt with the blow. But I am not interested in Mr.
Donavon. I think he is a nice man and, perhaps, one I could befriend,
nothing more." Buffy's eyes showed the wall she hid behind whenever acting
stubborn. Neither Kat nor Willow was fooled by her words.
"I believe you." Willow decided to just agree with her and it let it go.
"This one always makes you look radiant." Kat understood Willows
acceptance of Mistress Buffy's words. She then pulled out a dress that had
been pushed to the back of the armoire. It was fairly new to her collection.
Buffy looked at the part silk and part cotton dress that her mother had
personally ordered for her. The cotton part was emerald green while the loose
silk that covered it was of pure white. It dropped just enough on the top
part to expose a small amount of her breast. She preferred the dresses that
hinted at rather than actually exposed her top half.
"Your right, Kat." Buffy cried out in relief.
"What will we do with my hair?" Buffy's brief moment of happiness turn
to panic once again.
"Lets get her in the bath first." Willow rolled her eyes while chuckling
at the sudden mood swings of her best friend.
Willow listened as Buffy chatted with Kat, while bathing, about the
daily events on the plantation. She just hoped that if Buffy did have some
small interest in Angelus Donavon that he did not spurn her the way Reilly
had. She would hate to hang for murder. Because next time, she would kill
the man who hurt her dear friend.
Chpt. 12
Buffy had been to the old Lancaster house many times in her
seventeen
years. Yet as the carriage pulled up, she was struck with shock at just how
large the house really was. It amazed her that Matthew and Elizabeth
Lancaster had built such a large house with only two to live in it.
Willow saw Buffy holding her breath as they stood in a room with
Angelus' parents and smug looking brother, William. A few seconds later, they
were greeted by the daughter and Angelus himself.
Buffy's hands trembled at her side as she waited for him to glance her
way. Why did she desire his approval so badly? Why did it matter to her that
he not think her a lush?
"I see we finally get to meet your daughter." Angeline spoke up when she
caught the way William kept staring at the tiny thing seemly glued to her
friend's side.
"Yes, I'm afraid there were so many guests last night that it was
difficult to find her." Joyce replied.
William and Angelus found themselves staring hard at each another.
William chewed on his lower lip to prevent laughing.
"I apologize for the delay in meeting you." Buffy smiled sweetly toward
Angeline. She saw at once the resemblance between mother and son. She was
lovely and looked younger than her age. While musing on their resemblance,
Buffy caught sight of Angeline's daughter as Faith was introduced and found
her to be about the same age as herself. She thought she saw a curious gleam
in Faith's eyes when they were formally introduced.
"Let us go directly to the dinning room, I'm starving." Joseph offered
after the butler announced that dinner was ready.
Buffy watched as the elder Wainwrights locked arms before exiting the
room. As the others began to follow, she noticed Angelus out of the corner
her eye as he walked closer to her.
"How do you feel today?" he whispered.
"Wonderful. Thank you." Buffy smiled up at him. "And you?"
"Fine, although I felt need of a nap to recover from the lack of sleep."
Angelus explained. "You look lovely by the way." Angelus complimented her.
Buffy felt as if she had swallowed a handful of butterflies. Her stomach
seemed to flip flop about; her face felt warm.
"Thank you. You look exceptional, as well." Buffy return the compliment.
As they entered the dining room, they discovered they were seated next
to one another.
Willow caught the sight of them coming last and wondered what they were
discussing, then she, too, noticed the seating arrangements.
Dinner went on as usual. The men talked shop and the women talked
sewing, gardening, and the horrid weather, while the younger set concentrated
on the meal.
"Why are you young people so quite tonight?" Angeline called down to the
table.
The five exchanged a glances before collectively shrugging their
shoulders.
"Perhaps, while we sit in the parlor, you might walk about. The night
appears lovely." Angeline suggested.
"Sounds lovely." Buffy replied with a polite manner.
Angelus stood up while Buffy and Willow followed his lead, then William
and Faith proceeded to follow. Stepping into the back garden, all five seemed
a bit nervous and unsure what to do next.
"Faith, have you been to many of our shops?" Willow was the first to
break the silence.
"I'm afraid I have not had as much time to shop as I would like. Mother
and I have been busy making changes to the house. Though lovely already, she
wanted to make her own imprint." Faith explained with a shaky voice.
William and Angelus locked eyes for a brief second. Both knew how Faith
hated this part. She was very nervous around girls her own age. She had
experienced some bad incidents at the boarding school where their father had
sent her. It had seem to forever scar the poor thing.
"That sounds reasonable." Willow agreed with a gentle tone and genuine
smile.
"We will have to go shopping soon." Willow offered.
"That sounds wonderful." Faith replied politely. She began to fidget
with her hair.
"Do you ride?" Buffy popped up in the conversation.
"Yes!" Faith cried with excitement clearly on her face.
"Me too; we have a few horses. Perhaps we could go for a ride soon,
possibly make a picnic out of it." Buffy invited her.
"That would be lovely." Faith replied.
Angelus saw Faith starting to relax with these two girls. He and William
seated themselves on a bench a few feet behind the girls.
"She seems to have a natural ability to make one feel at ease." William
noted about the Summers girl.
"Yes, she does." Angelus replied with a slight proud tone.
"I'm surprised a girl as attractive, graceful, and compassionate as she
has not been swept off of her feet by now." William commented.
"I fear she had her heart set on someone who let her down." Angelus
revealed.
"Is that what she told you?" William looked at his brother.
"No, not exactly. We had a short discussion of our theory of marriage
and true love. She was strongly against a marriage of convenience and feared
true love would never find her." Angelus confessed a small part of their
conversation.
"Wow! She is rather young to be so cynical." William stated.
"I don't think there is a minimum age limit for a realization of how
unfair life can be." Angelus replied with a hurt look in his eyes.
"William, Angelus, did you know that Buffy's father breeds horses?"
Faith drew the boys into the conversation.
"No, I did not." Angelus replied feeling his cheeks start to burn
slightly.
"My brother fell asleep in your barn last night. I was quite upset when
he did not return. I'm afraid he was investigating your horses when he
accidentally fell asleep." Faith began to tell them the story he had told her.
Both Willow and Buffy felt themselves growing a bit nervous with this
particular topic. Both knew where and with whom he had spent the night, but
neither was about to tell her differently.
"Speaking of which, why don't we take them to our stables." William
suggested with a wicked gleam in his eyes.
Willow gasped and gave him a rude look before checking to see how Buffy
and Angelus were reacting to his suggestion. Both seem to lock their eyes in
a long knowing stare before cracking a smile and following Faith, who had
already started for the stables.
Faith wondered why Willow seemed so offended by Williams's suggestion?
She also wondered why Angelus and Buffy seem to act as if they had already
met? She had not seen Buffy the entire evening and knew she had not seen
Angelus and Buffy talking the night before.
She had a gut instinct there was more to her brother's story. She would
stay silent for now. She knew that everyone deserved some measure of personal
privacy.
"Let's show them our studs, Angelus." William chuckled as he took
Faith's hand and walked quickly toward the stables leaving the other three
with their mouths agape.
Chpt. 13
Buffy sat at her desk scrolling in her private journal. She
could not
believe that she was still awake. The clock down the hall had just rung
midnight. She was still keyed up over the last two days.
She had spent a wonderful evening with Angelus and his family. She
really liked his sister, Faith, who seemed to be a bit shy. Angelus and
William were somewhat protective of her. Buffy envied her that sibling
safety, as she herself was alone. She knew, in some ways, being and only
child was a blessing. She received many presents and a great deal of
attention. Still, she wished from time to time that her mother had been able
to bear more children.
She began to write about how considerate Angelus had been while they
were in the Wainwright stables. He made no comment to remind her of how they
had recently spent a night in a similar place. However, his obnoxious brother
didn't hold back his little sneaky puns here and there.
She thought Willow was going to strangle the fool. Buffy laughed at the
image that came to mind.
Although her eyes were mainly on Angelus she thought she caught a few
glances from William toward Willow. She wondered if he had taken a fancy to
her best friend? Buffy knew that Willow was like her, no hurry for love or
marriage.
She then began to remember a time where marriage seemed like the thing
to do, to want, to wish, and even to plan down to the smallest details. Then,
Reilly had come long and crushed those dreams. All her dreams evaporated when
Reilly told her that he could not marry her.
"I'm sorry Buffy, I can't marry you. I fear I might have led you on, to
believe, that we had a chance. I'm afraid I am already promised to another."
Reilly's head dropped as he confessed to the one woman he would always love.
"What? Promised to whom? That isn't done anymore! That is an old
tradition, left behind in England. You cannot be serious!" Buffy had cried
out with heated anger in her eyes.
"I'm afraid my parents are still a bit old-fashioned; or, at least, they
were before they died. In their will it states I must marry the one they
requested or I lose my inheritance." Reilly explained further.
"So, you are telling me you do not love me?" Buffy felt her heart burst
into a roaring flame.
"I did not say that. I'm trying to explain to you that I must do as my
parents requested. Its the least I can do for them." Reilly replied with a
heart-wrenching plea in his voice for her understanding of his position.
"They are DEAD! For God's sake, Reilly, just say it. You do not love
me, because if you did, you wouldn't give a damn about an inheritance." Buffy
felt the tears starting to slip out of her eyes while her pulse raced.
"That is easy for you to say, Buffy. You have an inheritance already;
plus when you marry, you will benefit from your husband's money as well."
Reilly snapped at her. He couldn't believe how selfish she was acting.
"Tell me you do no love me." Buffy's voice was cold and stern.
"I cannot say those words." Reilly said with a shaky voice.
"Then, you lie to yourself. I hope that the poor girl who gets stuck
with you can stand your lies. I will never, ever speak to you again." Buffy
wiped the fallen tears from her face, turned on her heel and marched away.
She heard him calling for her but refused to turn around; that would let him
see the pain that was on her face.
Buffy could have handled the heartache had it not become common
knowledge that Reilly had dumped her for another. Cordelia Chase had been the
happy newsmonger. She went about telling everyone how the six months Buffy
had spent hanging on Reilly Finn's every word had been wasted. He preferred
money to Buffy.
When Buffy discovered Cordelia had known all along that Reilly was
promised to another, it had been the final blow. It turn out that Anya
Talbot was Reilly's intended bride. Cordelia's very own step-cousin was to
become Reilly's bride and wife.
Buffy felt like such a fool. Everyone knew she had spent many hours with
this young man. Then, there was her own personal shame, she had shared so
many passionate kisses and exchanged caresses with him. She had allowed him
to go further with her than she had allowed any other man.
Of all the suitors that had come to see her, she had chosen the one man
already promised to another. Her father had been furious by Reilly's charade
and made it quite clear that he would hurt professionally for this. Rupert
Summers had informed all his business associates that he would never do
business with the young man. He could not trust him after the way he lead on
his daughter.
Of course, this only stirred up more gossip. It had been so horrifying;
she refused to even leave the house unless absolutely necessary. Luckily,
that was part of her past.
Now she was looking forward to a new start, a new dream. What, exactly,
that dream would be was still unclear. She just knew that no man would ever
tease her heart again. She understood how the world worked and would never
fooled again.
Her mind brought up an image of Angelus showing her his favorite mare.
His smile seemed to brighten up the room. Unlike other men she had been
associated with, Angelus had been kind and protective of Buffy's reputation.
She knew that a man such as he was not interested in marriage, so she
would not let herself be fooled into believing that a possibility between
them. Yet she reminded herself that there were other things they could do
that did not include marriage. She could always use another male friend.
Closing her journal she climbed into her bed and closed her eyes. She
couldn't seem to get the vision of him kissing her hand out of her mind. She
had reacted to his touch with such hunger. A hunger she had never known, even
with Reilly. Maybe she could use Angelus to explore a side of her she had
kept contained. She was tired of playing games by the rules.
She had tried that once and got nothing in return. This time maybe she
could find something that might benefit her. She fell into a deep sleep
filled with dreams of Angelus riding next to her. She smiled the entire night.
Chpt. 14
Angelus had agreed to ride into town with his mother and
sister. He knew
their father was too busy to play chaperone the ladies while they shopped. He
knew that his parents did not understand that it was not as necessary in the
Colonies to have a chaperone, unlike the streets of England.
However, he believed a day out of the house might do him some good. Once
they arrived in Liberty, he was started to regret his decision; Angeline and
Faith had him carry everything they purchased. He feared they would have to
sell the house once these two were finished.
"You know mother, that father does own an import business, do you not."
Angelus teased his mother.
"I do. I just want these things now. I do not want to wait for six weeks
just for a new set of curtains. Plus, these people deserve my money just as
much as the merchants in England or Italy." Angeline protested.
Angelus was proud of his mother's efforts in her new country. She had
often told Angelus how she had loathed Ireland and England did not fair too
well in her opinion, either. She was pleased to be a normal, every day
person, rather than the daughter-in-law of a well-known Duke of Ireland.
Faith had rushed off to look at fabric for a new riding outfit.
"Mom, did Father tell you of the news from Uncle Gavin?" Angelus never
kept secrets from his mother, especially when it was news about the Donavon
family.
"I'm afraid he did." Angeline slowed her paced down so she could have a
few minutes of privacy with her son before Faith returned.
"Did he tell you what I suggested?" Angelus asked.
"I must agree with you both. I do not want you to go there. I do not
wish for you to be the next Duke of that backstabbing family. I know,
however, that the people there deserve a better Duke than your Uncle or one
of his sons." Angeline's eyes showed her fears about Angelus leaving them for
his duties as the first-born son of Liam Donovan.
"I will wait until after winter before I depart. I will do as Father
suggested and just listen with my heart and follow my instincts." Angelus
assured her, patting her hand gently.
"I know you will." Angeline blink back unshed tears. Before she could
say more on the topic, Faith came marching back with a happy face.
"So what have you found?" Angelus teased her.
"I found seeds to plant in our garden. I can't wait to start a new
garden." Faith cried out in glee.
"You are one square peg." Angelus gave her a half hug to let her know he
was only playing with her.
As they turn the corner they found themselves face to face with Vanessa
Chase and her daughter, Cordelia.
All three of them felt a sudden dread at the sight of mother and
daughter. It was made pretty clear the night of the party that the Chase's
felt that they were THE family in Liberty. Angeline never cared much for the
upper class, nor did she care much for those who thought they were. Yet, she
put on a polite smile and proceeded to talk to the two women as if she were
thrilled to see them both.
Both Faith and Angelus knew just how hard it was for their mother to
keep up such an act. Yet both were amazed at how well she did it.
Chpt. 15
Buffy was trying to figure out just how she was going to
remind Faith
about her offer of riding and picnic without sounding too pushy. She was
going over a dialogue in her head when she heard a rider approaching the
house. She walked around to the front porch.
She saw that she recognized the rider. Her lips twirled up in a smile.
She was happy to see this visitor.
"I thought you had forgotten about us." Buffy grinned.
"I would never forget about you sweetheart." Alexander replied with his
best southern drawl.
"Where did you go after the party?" Alexander thought to ask. He had
searched high and low for her the entire evening, worried that she was
sitting in a remote corner crying over something someone might have said.
"I got a bit tipsy, so I went to bed early." Buffy half lied. She hated
to lie to him but she knew as much as he cared about her he would be furious
to learn she spent the night with a strange man.
"Oh. You poor wilted flower." Alexander playfully touched the tip of her
nose.
"I know." Buffy pouted.
"So, why are you out of doors?" Alexander remembered the last time he
had been there; excluding the party, she rarely stepped out of the house. Now
it seem she had at least jumped that hurdle. Maybe that was a good sign; she
was getting past Reilly after all.
"I was just thinking about how I would ask the neighbors' daughter if
she wanted to go on a ride and picnic tomorrow without sounding to pushy?"
Buffy answered.
"A picnic. That is one of those things where there is good food and a
rich dessert. Then once you are done with that you get on your horse and race
home?" Alexander asked her with a twinkle in his eyes.
"Yes!" Buffy giggled. She had always adored his playful attitude.
"How about I come along with you. I mean two women alone in the woods
with food need a manly chaperone." Alexander offered.
"Are you interested in the food, the race, or the company?" Buffy teased
him.
"Why, yes!" Alexander answered with a serious smile.
"OH!" Buffy hit his shoulder.
"What?" Alexander played ignorant.
Then, when he heard the old Buffy, the one he knew and had fallen in
love with, start laughing, he too found himself laughing.
"It sounds fair to me." Buffy agreed she took hold of his arm and led
him into the house so they could discuss his trips. She couldn't wait to
catch up with him.
******************************************************************************
Faith heard the Butler looking for her as she entered the kitchen area. She
began to walk through the house to find Mr. Peacock. She was glad her parents
had agreed to bring him to the colonies. He was a wonderful man. He was a
few years older than her father. Yet if you were to look at him you would
think he was several years younger. He was a vain man. She enjoyed teasing
him about his looks.
"Mr. Peacock." Faith called to him when she finally spotted him going up
the second floor stairs.
"Oh there you are, Miss Faith." Mr. Peacock called down to her.
They met midway. He handed her several envelopes.
"These came for you." Mr. Peacock was sure they were invitations to
several gatherings.
"Thank you." Faith frowned when she saw the amount of envelopes she had
received.
"You are most welcome." Mr. Peacock said in his usual stuff voice and
walked back down the stairs.
Faith felt like weeping. Why did these people want her to attend these
social events? Why did they want a girl like her at such fancy gatherings?
Then she thought of her older brothers. Of course, they want to get close to
her to try and win over her brothers.
Faith went to her room and threw them down on her bed, then flung
herself across them as she began to weep.
A few minutes later, Angelus stopped a few feet from her door way. He
saw that her door had been left open and could hear her crying.
He nearly ran to see what could be wrong with her.
"Faith!" Angelus cried out as he entered the room with a fast dash.
Faith nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound of his voice.
"What?" Faith sat up wiping the loose tears away from her face.
"What is wrong with you?" Angelus walked to her bedside and sat next to
her.
It was then that he saw all the envelopes lying underneath her.
"Is this about these?" Angelus picked one up and lifted it in front of
her face.
"Yes… you could say that." Faith sniffed.
"Why?" Angelus frowned at her.
"Because, Angelus...they do not like me; they never do. I'm just a tool
for them to get closer to you and William. I'm not a fool anymore. None of
them want my friendship for its own sake. I hate them all!" Faith began to
tear one she picked randomly. She looked like a mad woman.
"Hold on." Angelus grabbed her hands firmly between his.
"Do not try to talk me out of it." Faith warned him with sad eyes.
"Look, I agree that you have been used in some horrid plans by a few
women. But not all of these women are the same. Trust me when I say there are
a few good women out there. I mean you and Mother can't be the last two."
Angelus tipped her chin up so he could look into her dark brown eyes.
"Look, here is one from Annie Browning, it says she is inviting you to
tea. Then there is the one from the preacher's wife. Why would she want
William and me? Oh, and here is one from.... Buffy." Angelus felt his tongue
go numb just from her name rolling off of his tongue.
"What about her?" Faith asked with a curious stare into his own eyes.
"She seems genuinely nice, she and the red-headed friend of hers. I feel
that those two might be the right kind of girls for you to associate with. I
know when you met Cordelia this afternoon she reminded you of the girls at
school. Buffy and Willow are not like her or the others." Angelus hoped he
was persuading her enough to listen to him.
"Do you like her or something?" Faith blinked her eyes.
"I do like her. I think she appeared very nice and gracious. I think she
might... no, I'm sure she will be a good friend to you." Angelus challenged
her.
"I meant are you interested in her?" Faith licked her dry lips as she
watched her brother take a few seconds to process her question before
answering.
"How would I know that from one brief meeting?" Angelus retorted.
"True." Faith agreed but something far off in her head screamed that he
did like Buffy, first meeting or not.
"So, lets see, she wants to know if you are still interested in a
picnic. See that is a private setting. She does not mention anything about
asking me, or William for that matter. See, this is her chance to get to
know you." Angelus was relieved that he had proved his point.
"I will write her, at once, to let her know I accept; but, I want you to
come along too. I mean, just in case I get too nervous." Faith lied. She
wanted to test her elder brothers feelings for this girl.
She heard that her brother presence had been requested in Ireland. It
had just occurred to her that if he married a local girl, who might not want
to move to a foreign land, the couple might say in America, near her. Maybe
she could find him a wife who would persuade him to give up the dukedom to
stay close to his family.
She smiled wickedly, once he agreed. He left a few minutes later and
she quickly wrote an acceptance letter to be taken, at once, to the Summers.
There was no time to waste.
Chpt. 16
Buffy, Alexander, and Willow were waiting for Faith, who
they expected to
come alone. They were disappointed. Instead, they watched as Faith and
Angelus rode alongside one another.
"Who in the dickens is that?" Alexander asked with suspicions eyes.
"That's Faith's elder brother, Angelus Donavon." Buffy said. She hoped
her voice didn't reveal how sexy she thought he looked on his horse. She
found herself daydreaming of him riding up to her and lifting her up in front
of him. Then, she would tilt her head to the side so he could place a long,
steamy kiss on her lips.
Willow snapped her fingers a few times in front of the dreamy far-off
face of Buffy.
"Hello?" Willow rolled her eyes.
"Oh? What?" Buffy blinked a few times before coming back to reality.
"It appears that Angelus will be riding with us today, as well." Willow
informed her. While Buffy had been drifting off in her dream world, Alexander
departed to introduce himself to the newcomers and discovered he liked him as
Angelus felt it important that the women had a chaperone.
"Oh." Buffy felt her mouth drying up as though she had eaten cotton
balls for breakfast.
"Are you going to be okay?" Willow asked her with great concern in her
eyes.
"Of course. Its no big deal." Buffy began to babble but as soon as her
foot landed on the next step of the porch she found herself losing her
balance. She cried out as she felt herself tumbling toward the next stair.
Closing her eyes tightly so she wouldn't see the ground, she found herself in
a pair of strong arms.
"What happen?" Buffy peeped one eye open then the other. She looked
beneath her and saw that she was indeed being held in someone's arms.
"I fear you lost your balance." Angelus explained, as his face appeared
as white as a ghost.
"Buffy, are you alright?" Angelus asked with sincere concern in his
voice.
"Yeah... I'm just a clumsy fool." Buffy bit down on her lower lip,
unwilling to let him see how terribly embarrassed she was.
"I think not. I believe the marble some poor child lost was the cause of
your fall." Alexander showed them the dark blue marble that had caused Buffy
to lose her balance.
"Well, then; I'm not a clumsy fool. But I am clumsy. I warn you now."
Buffy looked into soft brown eyes and felt as if she would faint, she then
reminded herself that it would be safe to do so at the moment. At least, she
was already in his arms.
"I will heed your warning." Angelus replied while he stared into the
softest green eyes he had ever seen. They remind him of a pasture he played
in while staying in Ireland. Playing in that pasture was a sweet memory of
much fun. He wondered if she would be as much fun?
"Are you sure it would be safe to go on a picnic on a day like this?"
Faith looked up at the cloudy sky above them.
"The weather here is moody. Besides, a little rain can't hurt us."
Alexander teased the young female. Alexander then looked back at the older
brother of the beautiful young lady and wondered if the man realized he was
still holding Buffy in his arms?
"Mmm. are you going to carry her to the picnic?" Willow saw the frown on
the faces of Faith and Alexander as they looked at the couple.
"No. No." Angelus nearly dropped her as he swiftly put Buffy back on her
own two feet.
"Thank you." Buffy said with a hard gulp before tearing her eyes away
and racing to her horse.
"Let's go. I'm starving?" Alexander playfully whined as if they were
children once again.
"Yes, lets. I think we might beat the storm today." Willow replied. She
caught sight of Buffy and Angelus purposely riding next to one another. She
wondered if either of them were aware of the way the other snuck little
stares at the other? It did not take too long before they found the perfect
spot to stop and eat.
During the small talk, they discovered that Faith was really not as shy
as she appeared. She was just a bit insecure with her appearance and status.
They also learned how much of the world the Wainwrights had seen. It was
clear they were true cosmopolitans. Even though they were obviously extremely
wealthy, they did not carry themselves in a superior manner. Willow thought
of the Chase family and wished for them to take a few lessons from the
Wainwrights.
The group had just finished packing up and preparing to leave when the
sky opened and thunder roared across the field. It was clear they would be
thoroughly wet before arriving home. At once Willow, Faith, and Alexander
were riding in the direction of the Summers' house. Buffy had just mounted
her horse and gave her a soft kick when lighting hit a few feet away and
caused her horse to rear back and set out at a gallop. She fought for
control, but it was no use. Buffy thought she saw Angelus ahead of her but
wasn't sure. Just as she cried out his name she felt herself being thrown
into the air and landing on her backside with a loud thud.
The rain began to splash across her face. She struggled to breathe. Her
head pounded unmercifully while the thunder grew louder. It was the last
sound she heard before she closed her eyes and prayed that someone found her
before she drowned in the rain.
Chpt. 17
Angelus saw the others were already halfway to the Summers
home when he
realized that one of the riders was missing? He knew that Buffy's horse was
fast but she couldn't have made it past the others. He looked behind him and
saw no rider there either. The wind, rain and ever-darkening sky it made it
almost impossible to see.
He had heard the lighting hit something not to far behind him. He felt a
chill go up and down his spine and sensed that something was wrong. Turning
his horse, without a worry about himself, he raced back to where they had
enjoyed what had been a rather nice lunch.
Just as he crested the hill, he saw Buffy's horse jumping and kicking about
in a frenzy. His heart began to pound. Where was Buffy? Something screamed in
his head that she was hurt.
"Buffy!" He cried. He knew if she was hurt she probably couldn't hear
him above the constant roaring of the thunder.
He rode further on until he saw her. She was lying motionless in the
mud. He knew instantly she had been thrown from her horse. Jumping down, he
ran to her. Falling to his knees, he lifted her head and placed it his lap
as he checked her for broken bones. He could not see anything wrong with her.
He leant his head down closer to her mouth to check her breathing.
"Come on, sweetheart breath for me." He had known people to lose their
breath from hitting the ground hard. He prayed that this was the same case.
"Ow..." She whimpered.
At least, he knew she was alive. Picking her up for the second time that
day, he carried Buffy to an area somewhat sheltered from the wind and rain.
"Buffy! Buffy! Sweetheart … can you hear me?" Angelus cried as he pushed
back the wet hair that was half covering her face.
"It ...hurts...." Buffy tried to force the words out of her mouth but
lacked the necessary strength before the darkness engulfed her again.
"What hurts, darling.... tell me, Buffy. I need to know. Honey, please
try to stay awake. Come on." Angelus wiped a blotch of mud from her face as
he leaned closer to hear her.
"Chest.... it.... hurts...." She began to cry, tears streaming down her
face. Although she had not opened her eyes, he knew that she was struggling
to stay calm.
"It's okay. You probably just had the breath knocked out of you. We
need to find shelter, and fast. This storm is not letting up. Where can we
go?" Angelus began to frantically scan the area. He forced his mind to
remember what he saw as they rode to this area. Was there anything that that
could be used as temporary shelter?
"Think man!" Angelus said out loud to himself.
It came to him like a bolt of lightning. He had seen an abandon slave
cabin not far away. He remembered because he had asked Alexander what it was
and he had explained that the Lancasters and Summers allowed their servants
to build their own homes with in the boundaries of their lands.
Lifting Buffy, he grabbed the reins of his horse. Putting her on first,
he then mounted behind, holding her tightly against him as he prayed that he
would be able to find that cabin. He was finding it difficult to see in the
driving rain. He had never experience such a ferocious storm. Mother nature
was giving them one hell of time today he thought to himself.
"I'm going to find us some cover." Angelus whispered in Buffy's ear as
he tried to keep his horse steady and calm while he searched for the cabin.
He hoped the others made it safely to the house. He also hoped they were
smart enough to stay inside until the storm was over rather than beginning an
immediate search. The storm was going to cause horrible damage before it let
up. He just hoped it would end soon.
At last, he caught sight of the cabin. He halted the horse in front of
the cabin and quickly took Buffy inside and laid her down on the floor as
gently as possible. Remembering his horse, he went back outside and lead the
animal to the side of the cabin most sheltered from the wind. After tying
his beloved horse there, he ran back to the house where he began to start a
fire.
It took only a few minutes before he had not only heat but light as well
in the dark dank cabin. He looked around and saw the cabin had been
abandoned only recently. He saw a bed beside the wall and moved it closer to
the fire. He figured that this was for the children because he saw a door
that he was certain led to the room where the husband and wife slept.
Putting her on the bed, he glanced at the wet clinging blouse clearly
outlining her well-rounded bosom. Eventually, he realized that she was
breathing better than before. He just hoped she would awaken soon.
He knew the fall could have knocked the breath from her, but he wasn't
sure how hard she had hit her head. It was easy for one to get a serious,
possibly fatal, concussion from being thrown. He noticed that her body was
twitching as if she were cold. Testing her forehead for fever, he feared she
might catch a cold from lying in the rain.
He wasn't sure what to do next. He tried to remember what his mother had
done when he and William had been found after being lost in a storm when they
were young lads. She had made them get undressed at once and put warm
blankets around them. Should he do the same to her? Could he?
"This would be so much easier were you awake." Angelus moaned as he
debated on the best course of action.
"I'm so cold." Buffy mumbled as her teeth began to chatter.
"Buffy can you hear me?" Angelus nearly jumped at hearing her voice.
"Yes." Buffy forced her eyes to open slightly.
"Darling, we need to get your wet clothes off." Angelus said in a
soothing tone.
"I can't." Buffy shook her head from side to side.
"We have to or you'll catch your death of cold." Angelus pleaded with
her.
"I can't. I'm...too...weak." Buffy started to feel herself growing more
alert.
"Does your head hurt?" Angelus saw that she was starting to wake up.
"Yes.... terribly." Buffy reached around and felt a goose egg knot on
her head.
"Look... we need to get you warm and keep you awake." Angelus saw the
large lump on her head once she removed her hand.
"How? I don't have any clothes. I'm tired. Let me sleep." Buffy stretch
her legs out and winced when she felt the sharp pain pierce her ankle.
"What? Did you break something too?" Angelus asked.
"Ankle hurts." Buffy replied.
Angelus' hands went straight to her ankles. He saw that her left ankle
was a bit swollen but it didn't appear to be broken.
"Looks like you might have sprained it." Angelus informed her.
"It's so cold." Buffy tried to roll up in a ball to warm herself.
"Buffy, we need to dry our clothes. I need you to help me undress you."
Angelus told her again. He expected her to start protesting at the thought of
disrobing with him but was shocked when she agreed easily.
"Okay. But you have to help me." Buffy pleaded as her fingers went to
the buttons on her blouse.
Angelus thought for a moment that perhaps he was the one with a
concussion who had passed out in the rain. How was it possible? Here he is
in a cabin with Buffy, who was agreeing to undress while outside a raging
storm caused havoc? His gut told him that this was not going to end well for
either of them.
Chpt. 18
Angelus watched as she fumbled with the pearl buttons of
her blouse. He
noticed that her face was growing pale. Staring at down her hands, he saw
they too seemed to be growing awfully white as well. Angelus reached out to
touch her forehead with the back of his hand; she was indeed growing warmer,
he told himself.
Without debating further, he pushed her fumbling hands away and began to
undress her. Once he had the blouse off, he dropped it to the floor. He saw
that she wore the usual undergarments. Next, he reached around behind her and
began to unbutton her skirt. Once it was off, he saw that she had only her
slip covering her.
She lay there unmoving. It was then that he took a moment and looked her
over from head to toe. She was beautiful. He noted the natural glow of her
skin. Then his eyes fell to her breasts. They were the perfect hand size. He
knew the cool air was causing her nipples to harden.
Licking his lips, he forced himself to take a deep breath then began a
search for extra blankets to put on her while he placed her clothes, along
with his own, on a make-shift clothes line along. He knew that in order to
bring her temperature back to normal and to provide her with enough heat, he
too would have to be practically naked.
Once accomplished, he climbed over her and lay with his chest cradling
her back. He tried not to think of how erotic this moment could be if she
were not unconscious.
"Why are you always oblivious when we have these moments?" He whispered
in her ear with a soft chuckle.
This was the second time that he had been completely alone with this
young lady. He wondered if there was any hope for them at all? Then he asked
himself why would he consider the question of hope to begin with? He was
leaving after the winter season. Sure, he did not know whether he would
return here to make his future home or not, but why take the chance of
getting close to someone one might have to leave behind? It was not a smart
move.
He heard the storm raging outside the thin walls and prayed they would not be
blown away. Or even worse, the two of them were not found this way. He had
been saved by the grace of God, once before when it came to this girl. Could
his luck hold?
He heard her moan and complain she of the cold. Instinctually, he
wrapped his arms around her, pulling her as close as possible to him.
Buffy instantly felt the heat, sighing with contentment. She wanted to
sleep forever in this state; but luckily, Angelus remembered that she might
have a concussion.
"Buffy, you need to wake up. We need to make sure you can wake up."
Angelus told her.
Buffy heard his voice, but her body didn't want to respond to the
demand. It wanted, no needed, rest.
"NO." Buffy cried out as she cupped her hands under her cheeks.
"Buffy, I have to keep you awake." Angelus began to think of ways he
could keep her awake for at least another hour. As they were naked and lying
together, only one answer kept coming to mind.
He felt his loins tighten at the prospect of making love to her now.
Then felt like kicking himself for even considering such a deed while she was
obviously so ill.
"Come on... please wake up...." Angelus pleaded as his lips brushed up
against her ear.
"Mmm.... nice." Buffy replied to his accidental touch.
Angelus wondered if she were faking? Was it possible that she wanted to
be with him but feared being called a scarlet woman? No, she was too much of
a lady for that sort of thing. Rather, it must be the shock of the fall and
the fever causing her to wiggle her small, round, firm buttocks against his
loins. He was afraid he would lose this game if he remained a moment longer
in this bed, yet he did not move.
Chpt. 19
"If you don't stop moving like that I won't be able to
control myself,"
Angelus grunted as fought to control his hunger for this tasty little morsel.
"What am I doing?" Buffy ask as she began to awaken at the sound of his
voice so close to her ears.
"Your...well... you're grinding up against me." Angelus replied with a
strain voice.
"I cannot help it." Buffy moaned as she felt his smooth flat chest up
against her back. Heat seemed to radiate from his body and she could not get
close enough to it.
"Buffy, darling." Angelus pleaded with her to stop the torture.
Buffy rolled over to face him. Instead of really looking at her source
of heat, she seemed to snuggle up into his neck while wrapping her arms
around his waist drawing him closer to her. She sighed as the heat she was
looking for warmed her.
"Yes." Buffy moaned into his neck.
Angelus' eyes rolled in his head as he felt her legs wrapping around his
own. He was sure that no man could resist such a temptation as was being
placed before him at the moment.
"You smell...so...manly." Buffy murmured as she began to sniff at him as
if she was a dog.
"I think the fever is scrambling your brain." Angelus sighed as her
hands began to glide up and down his naked backside.
Buffy didn't reply she just pulled him closer. He choked as he felt her
thinly covered breasts rub up against his own bare chest.
"Are you awake?" Angelus asked with a high pitch voice.
"Yes...I think so...if not this is a heavenly dream." Buffy whispered as
her lips grazed his neck.
Buffy felt her body starting to burn and not just from his body heat.
Something inside her was craving his body. She opened her eyes to see she was
face to face with his throat. She was not sure why but she opened her mouth
and, licking her dry lips, she slipped her tongue out to touch his warm
flesh. It scorched her tongue, but it was worth the taste of his salty skin.
"Buffy!" Angelus nearly jumped off the bed from her touch. He looked
down at the girl who had just licked his throat.
"What are you doing?" Angelus pleaded with her.
"I do not know. I'm sorry." Buffy's hands removed themselves from his
back and then she put them on his chest as she began to slide them up and
down. She stared at it as if it was a fine piece of art.
"You do realize that you are driving me to distraction." Angelus asked
her with a husky voice.
"How?" Buffy ask with such innocent eyes that Angelus wondered once
again if he were dreaming this whole scenario.
"Buffy, we are naked. We are alone. You are rubbing up and down next to
me. I'm trying not to do anything we would both later regret." Angelus
explained to her in a sincere voice.
"I do not think I would regret this. Will you kiss me?" Buffy ask with
passionate eyes.
"WHAT!" Angelus pushed her a few inches away so he could get a better
look at her. He feared the bump on her head was causing this strange behavior
from such an innocent young lady.
"I'm not ill. I'm a woman who has needs. I cannot seem to forget you
since our first encounter. I need to know what it is a man wants from a
woman. Can you teach me?" Buffy asked with such a fierce need in her voice
and eyes that Angelus knew he was not going to be able to stop either of them
once they got started.
"I cannot do that. I'm sorry, Buffy." Angelus looked down at the blanket
covering them. He feared that if he saw the hurt in her eyes he would surely
break down and do things to her that she might enjoy at the moment but later
would hate him for.
"Damn you! Damn all your kind!" Buffy growled as her fists began to beat
at his bare chest with hard angry thuds.
"Stop. Stop." Angelus grabbed her hands together as he looked down into
a pair of tearful eyes. Tears began to stream down her face as she looked at
him as if he were someone else. He feared she was delirious.
"I hate you Reilly! It's so like you to play these kinds of games with
me. One minute you are pleading for another kiss and then the next to say we
must think of what others might think. Then...Oh yed, I didn't forget about
your talk of love to me. But you don't want to marry me! The damn money was
worth more than me. I hate you." Buffy began to scream like a mad woman.
Angelus realized she was revealing a very hurtful moment in her past. He
was starting to understand why she was so cynical. Someone named Reilly had
used her then, due to some inheritance or perhaps a payoff from her father,
denied her marriage.
"Buffy, darling; it's me, Angelus. Look at me!" Angelus took his free
hand and turned her face to look at him closer.
"Angelus." Buffy's face seem to calm down as she began to recognize who
was holding her.
"It's me, sweetheart." Angelus replied in a soothing tone.
"Why does no one want me?" Buffy ask with such a pitiful expression that
Angelus felt his heartstrings shredding to pieces.
"Am I so ugly. Is that's why you won't kiss me." Buffy stated wondering
why he did not want to share an intimate moment with her.
"NO! You are one of the most beautiful women I have ever met. I'm afraid
that once I kiss you, I won't be able to myself from going further." Angelus
explained.
"I can stop you." Buffy suggested. "Please, just kiss me. I need to
know if you truly desire me." Buffy said with hopeful eyes.
"Just one." Angelus warned her. He couldn't hurt her by refusing her
again. He would rather take the chance of going too far than seeing her cry
again.
Leaning over her still form, he released her hands. He noticed that she
had begun to breath harder the closer he got to her.
Both licked their lips, seconds away to sharing their first kiss.
Angelus watched as her eyes closed just as they made contact. Her lips were
hot from the fever but still as soft as roses. Sliding his tongue across her
closed lips, he waited until she allowed him to enter her mouth. Her lips
move apart and her mouth opened, welcoming his invasion.
His hands reached up to the side of her face, then he began to run his
fingers through her hair. Buffy felt the entire room go up in flames. Her
free hands returned to his backside as she began to touch him everywhere
possible. Both began to moan as his pelvis ground against her. She pushed up
her hips to make contact to his body.
The kiss seemed never-ending and neither wanted it to end. Hands began
to touch, slide, and caress each other's bodies as they continued to kiss,
stopping only long enough to take a quick breath.
They were both so wrapped up with the passion their bodies were feeling
and exploring that neither of them had noticed the storm had died down
outside or the fact that someone stood in the door way watching the scene.
Chpt. 20
Faith sat next to Willow
while they waited for Angelus and Buffy to return, both greatly concerned about their safety. "I'm afraid that is the worst storm I have seen in some while." Willow said as she picked up the cup of warm tea and began to sip. "I usually love the rain, but I have to admit this particular storm has me shaken up. Perhaps it is the fact that my brother is out in it. I hope he and Buffy are alright." Faith said as she stared into the flames of the fire. "I'm sure they are." Willow's eyes turn to the fire as well. "I had a feeling the two of you would still be here." Joyce Summers walked into the room carrying a tray of fresh sandwiches. "I thought you might be hungry." Joyce explained as she set the tray in front of them. "Thank you, Mrs. Summers." Faith replied politely. "Come on girls, you know as well as I do they are perfectly safe. Eat before you catch a cold." Joyce tried to stay as calm as she hoped she appeared to the young girls, but inside she was worried. "She has a point." Willow agreed with Joyce as she picked up a small sandwich and began to nibble on it. Faith mimicked her. "Who did you say went to find them?" Willow looked up at Joyce. "Rupert, Alexander, a few of the servant men... oh and Faith's brother showed to check on her safety. When he heard Angelus and Buffy were missing, he joined the search party." Joyce gave her an apologetic smile. She had almost forgot about William Wainwright showing up at the very last minute. She was grateful there were plenty of people to search for the lost couple. She knew in her heart that Buffy was safe; mothers' instinct she supposed. "I'm glad Buffy's dress fit you." Joyce mention as she saw how close the two girls were in the same size. "Thank you again for loaning me this while my clothes dry. I must admit I would be freezing were I still wearing my soaked dress." Faith smiled at her hostess. "You are quite welcome. Willow stop chewing your nails." Joyce softly scolded the young girl. She knew Willow always chewed her nails whenever she was nervous. "I'm sorry." Willow chuckled. She could always count on Joyce to treat her as only a mother could. ****************************************************************************** Rupert Summers decided to have everyone go separate ways to find the missing couple. He felt, after meeting Angelus, the boy was smart enough to get them out of the danger of the storm. But he also reminded himself that either or both of them could be hurt as well. He looked at the small group of men and felt confident they would find his little girl and bring her home safe and sound. William rode in the direction from which he had come to the Summers' house; he remembered seeing what looked like a cabin behind a grove of trees. When he arrived, he saw smoke coming from the chimney. He tapped on the door and, when no answer came, he opened the door only to see his brother naked and atop the young Summers' girl. His first reaction was to start laughing at catching his brother in such a predicament, but he knew the girl's father was not too far behind him. If caught, his brother would be either married or hung before sunset. "Bloody hell!" William shook his head with disbelief. Buffy had not heard a thing, but Angelus had. Breaking their kiss, he looked up to see his brother staring at him with a set of eyes that spoke volumes. "William." Angelus choked as he instinctively pulled the blanket over Buffy. "Yes, it is I, your dear brother; and I would suggest you two get dressed and quickly. There is a group of men is searching not too far behind me. I believe one of their number is HER father." William warned as he turned his back to allow them to dress. "OH, SHIT!" Angelus swore. Buffy's face burned with shame. They had been caught in such an intimate moment. According to William, she had been lucky it had not been her father who had found them. "I'm so sorry, Angelus." Buffy cried out as she fought to sit up. Angelus jumped over her without a care to her viewing his naked form. He began to grab his clothes and handed Buffy's to her. Both began to scramble into their clothes. Angelus was the first to finish dressing. He then turned to see if she was ready and saw that she was shaking and a bit disoriented as she fought with the buttons once again. "Here, let me help you." Angelus flew to her side as he began to button them as if he had been doing it all his life. "I feel...funny." Buffy spoke softly. She did not know if William could hear them or not. "I'm sure it is from that horrible bump on your head." Angelus reminded her of the wound. "No. I mean yes, that does hurt; but I mean the rest of my body feels tingling." Buffy placed her hands over his and force him to look at her in the eyes. "It is called passion, darling." Angelus explained. Angelus noticed her lips were still swollen from their earlier kisses. He knew what he was about to do was pushing their luck, but, grabbing her head between his hands, he gave her one more kiss on the mouth before releasing her. "I hope you are not mad at me." Angelus look at her for a hint to how she might be feeling about what had occurred between them. "I could never be mad at you." Buffy vowed to him. "Here they are." William came back inside and saw the way the couple was staring into the others eyes. He feared the young lady would be the death of his brother. "Here, William, help me. She has a big bump on her head and a sprained ankle." Angelus explained to William as they both helped Buffy out of the cabin. "You found them." Rupert called out with relief as he saw William walking out with his brother and Buffy. "Good heavens, what happened?" Rupert and Alexander both swung down and flew to her side. "My horse threw me and, luckily for me, Angelus saw me and came back. I fear it knocked the breath out of me and gave me a goose egg on my head along with a sprained ankle." Buffy explained to her father. "Lucky for you that Angelus found shelter. We saw several homes with roofs blown completely off." Rupert informed them as he took his daughter from the two young men and lifted her up to place her on his horse. "I'm just glad we survived." Angelus said. His eyes locked with Buffy and both knew the true meaning of his statement "Me too." Alexander spoke up at this point. He had a strange feeling that something happened between the two in the cabin, something did not intend to share with the group. "Where is Faith?" Angelus turned to Alexander for an answer. "She is at the house awaiting your safe return." Alexander answered. "Let us retrieve our sister." Angelus left to get his horse. By the time he returned, the others had already left. "I had them go on without us. Care to tell me what your were doing in there?" William asked, disappointment clear in his voice. "If you do not know, dear brother; then you have much to learn." Angelus teased him. "You know what I mean." William did not even crack a smile. "I feared she had a fever and I tried to help her break it. She became rather delirious and, I'm sorry to say, I was weak for a moment. We went no further than kissing. Don't fret so, I did not steal her innocence." Angelus sat on his horse. "I know you would never do anything to cause shame to her or her family. I just fear that this girl isn't good for you. This is the second time I have saved you from being forced into a unwanted marriage." William pointed out Buffy and Angelus' history and his part in it. "I thank you, brother. You have been very understanding and loyal. I hope to repay you." Angelus reached over and patted his brother on the shoulder. "Oh, trust me, you will. Someday, dear brother, you WILL help me." William warned him with a twinkle in his eye, as they rode to the Summers' house. Chpt. 21 Buffy felt gloomy and bored. The family physician had assured her
