Chapter Seven

Dee felt like she'd barely fallen asleep when the alarm went off.  She reached for it and hit the button, but the noise continued.  Then she realized her alarm clock didn't play Ode to Joy, but her cellphone did.  She rolled over and grabbed her phone off the nightstand and answered in a husky, sleep-filled voice, "Hello? And this better be good…"

"Dee?"

"Joey?"

Dee sat up straight in bed and looked at the clock.  5am.

"This is your wakeup call.  You now have 59 minutes and 20 seconds to get your pretty little ass to work."

Dee couldn't help but smile.  "And what are you doing up at this ungodly hour?"

"Up? I haven't been to bed yet.  We closed the club around 3am and came back to the hotel and played cards until now."

"Had a good time I assume.  Did you guys keep Melanie out all night too?"

"Lance did.  We hardly saw them!"

Dee smiled again.  Seemed like her friend was living her fantasy, if only briefly.

"When are you going on to your next tour stop?" Dee asked yawning.

"Probably tomorrow sometime, they tell us."

Dee had no idea where it came from and she could hardly believe the words she heard coming out of her mouth.  "What are you doing today?"

"Sleeping" Joey laughed.

"Later today?"

"Sleeping!"

"When was the last time you had a home-cooked meal?"  Dee was convinced she had become possessed. This was NOT her talking.

"Ummmmmmmm…probably Easter?"

"How about if I make you guys dinner tonight at my place.  I'll pick you up around 3pm when I get off work?"

"Sounds like a great idea. Can you make it 5? Justin and JC are flying to Detroit for some business and we have a band meeting at 4."

"Sure and whoever is there when I get there is welcome to come along."

"We're at the Wyndam Hotel.  Ask for Wilson Watson at the desk."

Dee laughed. "Code name?"

"Yeah."

"Okay, get some sleep and I'll see you at 5pm."

"Have a good day at work."

"Those are mutually exclusive words!"

Joey was laughing when she hung up.  What did I just do? she thought.  But then she smiled to herself as she made her way to the shower.

Dee wanted to catch Melanie before she left for her parents' cottage, though getting in at 5am, she wasn't sure if she would be leaving as early as she said she had planned.  Dee still made a call at 8am on her way to a break in the cafeteria.

It was obvious when Melanie answered that she wasn't going anywhere soon.

"Melanie.  Are you going to the cottage today?"

"No. Decided not to go. Too tired. Gonna sleep," she said groggily.

"I've got a favor to ask of you."

"Uh huh."

Dee had a feeling Melanie wasn't listening.

"Can you go to the Wyndham Hotel and pick up Joey, Lance and Chris at 5pm?"

"Sure, no problem."

Dee was now certain Melanie wasn't listening.  She waited.  She knew eventually that it would sink in.

"WHAT???????"

Dee smiled.  "Joey gave me a wakeup call at 5 this morning and my alter ego invited them to my place for dinner.  I told him I'd pick them up, but I realized I'll have to go shopping and prepare dinner and get the house cleaned up before they get here.  I thought you might be able to do the chauffeuring for me."

"You must have the wrong number. This cannot be the Deirdre Scott who has been acting like she'd been dead for the past year."

Dee sighed.  "Well, maybe it's time I got back to taking chances and back to living."

"You go gerl!  I would be more than happy to do the honors of picking them up. Lance said he was going to call me later today, so I'll make the arrangements then."

"Thanks Mel…see you tonight."
