Yu Xiu Lian

From Episode 1 till the end. She is one of the 4 lead characters.

Personality
Kind and helpful but very street smart and weary of the people she meets. She has been around long enough to know who is nice and who isn't, and she is the guiding light to Mu Bai in times of dechiphering the human heart. She also has the will of steel, very determined and will kill if she had to. She has a deep sense of honour and duty, which will be her two biggest enemy.

Most Common Expression
Looking way too serious, crying and looking worried and sometimes looking hopeless as to why things happen in a certain way and sometimes, smile that pretty and heart warming smile.

Hopes And Dreams
Aims to live a normal happy life with her parents and to marry her long time fiancee, Mong Da Ger but her normal and sheltered life was shattered when her whole family was killed by rival gang, the Jiang family in Episode 1. From thereon, she went in search of her Mong Da Ger with Mu Bai only to be told that he was killed by the government for his anti-government activites. But when she realised he didn't die but was hiding under a secret identity as a textile merchant, she went in search of him and he accepted her. They were to be married soon but then he dumped her. Later she will fall deeply for Mu Bai only to be left waiting for him to return to her, which we will never get to see unless there is a sequal.At this moment, her hope is to reopen her family business; the ancient times Federal Express cum Securicor though sometime later she was quite contented to be the wife of a textile merchant.

Best Friends
The very first person who consoled her when her whole family died, and the man who repeatedly saved her life, Li Mu Bai, a man that she obviously like. 

Obvious Love Interest
Li Mu Bai, but she has yet to realise that.

Her view on love
She believes in true love, but has yet to meet such a man though she thought her Mong Da Ger was the one. But yet she was also quite confusing. She believes in meeting the man of her dreams and yet she is a bit apprehensive of the possibility of really finding the perfect man. She perhaps knows that her love for Mong Da Ger is more of the duty by the arrangement that her parents made when Xiu Lian was little and that her love is more of affection than true love (she herself doubts her love for Mong Da Ger is anything more than deep affection and a family arrangement), and yet she is ready to marry this Mong Da Ger though he may not be her true love. She remembers him when they were little and she equats that as love, but quite obviously, she feels little passion for that man. Jiao Lung questioned Xiu Lian on her beliefs of love and called her stupid for marrying for duty and honour since both parents are dead so she can pretend the arrangement never exists or cease to exists. Perhaps after going through so much pain of losing her entire family in one day, all she wants is a tree to lean on and Mong Da Ger is the most convenient tree. Probably she doesn't realise that until she looks the other way and sees Li Mu Bai standing there, probably waiting for her eventhough he doesn't realise it at that time.

Comments & A Bit Of Speculation
She lived on though her whole family died. She was angry but she decided to let go when Li Mu Bai repeatedly reminded her that her father's last wish was for her to live a long and fruitful life. She will fall for Li Mu Bai but will she look beyond her deep sense of loyalty and honour to make the first step towards the relationship of a lifetime?
