Tournament Preview: US Open 29 Aug-11 Sep 2005 GLITZ AND GLAM IN THE BIG APPLE As the US Summer hardcourt season draws to a close, Flushing Meadows prepares itself for the grand finale. The US Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments marking the cornerstones of the ATP season along with the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon, will see two weeks of the world's finest tennis players in action in one of the world's most vibrant and recognised cities, New York. The landmark Arthur Ashe Stadium, seating 23 200; the patriotic opening and closing ceremonies and the general vibe generated by New York and its people mean American culture and style are boldly embraced. Add in some spectacular tennis and high-profile celebrity appearances and you have the glitz and glamour that is the US Open. The 2004 final saw Swiss world number one, Roger Federer, defeat 2003 champion, Lleyton Hewitt of Australia 6-0 7-6(3) 6-0, giving him his first US Open crown and an incredible third Grand Slam title of the year. The doubles honours went to the experienced team of Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor, who overcame number thirteen seeds Leander Paes and David Rikl, 6-3 6-3. This year's field sees 98 of the world's top 100 players take part, with the only exceptions so far being Guillermo Caņas and Joachim Johansson. Tennis fans will therefore be able to witness first hand the mastery of Federer, the tenacity of Hewitt, the enthusiasm of Nadal, the spirit of Roddick, the enigma of Safin, the class of Agassi and much much more. Qualifying for the event starts on Tuesday 23 August and the main draw ceremony will take place on Wednesday 24 August at 11am. Tickets may be purchased through Ticketmaster.com (1-866-OPEN-TIX) or any of their outlets. The USTA National Tennis Center box office is also open from 9am-9pm throughout the Open (except on Friday September 10 when it will close at 6pm). Seating in Arthur Ashe stadium is reserved only so make sure you have booked your tickets in advance. Courtside box seating and Reserved Loge seating is also reserved in Louis Armstrong Stadium (seats 10 200), while the rest is on a first-come-first-served basis. This basis also applies for the Grandstand (seats 6000) and all other outer courts where free seating is available. More detailed seating plans for Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium as well as a complete venue map can be viewed by clicking on the respective links. The USTA National Tennis Center is accessible by subway, rail or car. It is situated just a short walk away from the Shea Subway station. Likewise if you're travelling by train, there is a system operating between Penn Station and the centre (Shea Stadium/Willets Point Station). By car, it can be accessed by taking the Shea Stadium Exit (or in some cases also Northern Blvd). If you are lucky enough to make it to the US Open, you might also want to take in everything that New York itself has to offer. Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, numerous theatres, great shopping, fantastic restaurants and wild nightlife all characterise this thriving metropolis. There is also plenty to do at the tennis itself with player autograph signing sessions, Arthur Ashe Kids day and more. However you choose to enjoy the US Open, make sure you absorb the atmosphere, experience the thrills of live sport and feel the vibe that is Grand Slam tennis in the Big Apple.
