Tournament Preview: Tokyo 1-9 October 2005 AIG OPEN 2005 The Asian swing continues with the AIG Open in Tokyo. Japan's capital will once again host the ATP gold series event, which is joined with the WTA Tier III event at Ariake Tennis Forest Park from 1-9 October. Last year's final saw Czech, Jiri Novak, beat the American, Taylor Dent, 5-7 6-1 6-3. This year's field promises once again to make for an interesting tournament despite the withdrawals of Henman, Safin and Nalbandian due to injury. 2004 French Open champion and current world number 11, Gaston Gaudio, has been granted a wildcard and will head a list which also includes Croat, Mario Ancic, fresh off his nation's semifinal win in the Davis Cup; 2005 French Open finalist, Mariano Puerta; recent US Open semifinalist, Robby Ginepri; last year's finalist, Taylor Dent; 2003 Australian Open finalist and former winner in Tokyo, Rainer Schüttler and German drawcard, Tommy Haas. Local Japanese fans will also be able to see some countrymen in action with Ittogi Takahiro and Terachi Takahiro both granted wildcards for the tournament. The doubles line-ups are just as good with the current world number 1 pairing of American twins, Bon and Mike Bryan, as well as reigning Wimbledon champions, Huss and Moodie and the world number 7 pairing of Australians, Wayne Arthurs and Paul Hanley. The qualifying for the tournament will take place on Saturday 1 October and Sunday 2 October, with the main draw commencing on Monday 3 October. It will take place at the Ariake Colosseum at Ariake Tennis Forest Park which includes 48 hardcourts and is located about half an hour out of the city. It can be reached by subway or bus, and more information on access and the venue itself can be found at http://www.jta-tennis.or.jp/aigopen/e/access.html The official hotel for the tournament is the Le Meridien Grand Pacific Tokyo, located at Minato-Ku.
