Tournament Preview: San José 13 - 19 February 2006 SAP OPEN 2006 With the US hardcourt tournaments now in full swing, San José is next on the agenda. 3 of the world's top 10 have accepted to play here, with the list headed by American world number 3, Andy Roddick. The 2 time Wimbledon finalist and 2003 US Open champion will be looking to score his first tournament win for 2006 but will have some tough competition. Australian star, Lleyton Hewitt, will also be returning to San José and looking to improve after some disappointing results at his home tournaments. He has been suffering an ankle injury since the Australian Open, which forced him out of the Davis Cup, but will be hoping to put that behind him and do well during the US hardcourt swing, where he has previously had a lot of success. Tennis great, Andre Agassi, is also a name of note. After missing the Australian Open, he started his 2006 campaign off in Delray Beach and will undoubtedly be one of the crowd favourites at this year's event. Making his debut at the tournament is Spaniard, Tommy Robredo, who is hoping to improve his hardcourt game in the lead-up to the Indian Wells and Miami Masters tournaments next month. American James Blake has also accepted to play here and should be another drawcard for the tournament. Swede Joachim Johansson will be making his comeback after several months away from the circuit due to a shoulder injury. He will be hoping to pick up where he left off, as he reached the US Open semis in 2004. Rising British star, Andy Murray, will also be in action. The wildcards for this year's event have been given to American, Mardy Fish; Australian Mark Philippoussis and the up and coming American youngster, Scoville Jenkins. Another coup for the tournament was the doubles acceptance of Jonas Björkman and John McEnroe. Yes, THE John McEnroe. The Swedish doubles specialist along with the ever feisty McEnroe is sure to be one of the highlights of the tournament. The qualifying event is held on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 February at the Courtside Club, Los Gatos. Main draw action kicks off on Monday 13 February and the HP Pavilion, San José. Individual session tickets are available through Ticketmaster and cost between US $19-$36. For more detailed information on ticketing and packages, visit the official site (http://www.sapopentennis.com/tickets/). One of the official tournament hotels is The Fairmont San José. The HP Pavilion is located across the street from the San José Diridon Caltrain station and a limited-stop bus service will also be running.
