Tournament Preview: New Haven 22-28 August 2005 FIRST ATP EVENT FOR NEW HAVEN 2005 sees New Haven host an ATP tournament for the first time, following its purchase by the USTA. It replaces the event previously held at Long Island and, joining the existing WTA tournament, will be the only combined ATP and WTA event of the Summer series leading up to the US Open. Between 19 and 28 August, fans will be able to enjoy high class tennis from the world's top male and female players as they battle it out at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. World number 7, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia heads a star-studded ATP field of 48, which also includes rising French teen, Richard Gasquet; German heartthrob, Tommy Haas and Olympic gold medalist, Nicolas Massu of Chile. The women will be led by world number 1, Lindsay Davenport; reigning US Open champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and French star, Amelie Mauresmo. Qualifying will be held on Friday 19 August and Saturday 20 August and the main draw will commence on Sunday 21 August, culminating in the finals on Sunday 28 August. Day sessions from 19-26 August will commence at 10am with gates opening at 9am and evening sessions will commence at 7pm (except Friday 26th which begins at 7.30pm) with gates opening at 5pm. Semi finals day will start at 1pm, with gates opening at 11am, and the evening session will start at 7.30pm. The final Sunday will start at 12 noon with gates opening at 10am. Travel packages are also available through the site, however it is recommended you book these in advance as they sell out very quickly. The closest hotel to the tournament venue is the Best Western in West Haven, situated 4.1 miles away. If you're planning to spend a few days in New Haven, you might want to combine some tennis watching with some sightseeing. If so, be sure to take in all cultural attractions New Haven has to offer with its churches, historical museums and monuments. The 2005 Jazz Festival is also being held Saturday 20 August, serving as a great way to kick start a week filled with excitement at the 2005 Pilot Pen Tennis event.
