Tournament Preview: 12-18 September 2005 BACK ON CLAY IN BUCHAREST After a Summer of North American hardcourts, the circuit returns to Europe for the second last clay tournament of the season. Spanish world number 13, David Ferrer heads a list which also comprises of Italian, Filippo Volandri, last year's winner José Acasuso from Argentina, his compatriots, Juan Ignacio Chela, Agusting Calleri and Mariano Zabaleta and rising Spaniards, Fernando Verdasco, Nicolas Almagro, Albert Montañés and Guillermo Garcia Lopez. Last year's finalist, Igor Andreev, of Russia will be back again, as will the exciting young French players; Gaël Monfils and Paul-Henri Mathieu. The local fans will also be able to cheer on their hometown favourites, Victor Hanescu, who reached the quarter finals of this year's French Open, Andrei Pavel who was awarded a wildcard, and Razvan Sabau. Acasuso, who himself is no slouch on clay, will have his work cut out against the likes of Ferrer, who has had an impressive clay season reaching the French Open quarterfinals, Chela, also a French Open quarterfinalist, Verdasco, a strong competitor on that surface, and Andreev, who won Valencia in April. Or could one of the local boys steal the show and delight the home crowd? The answers will gradually be revealed between 12 and 18 September 2005.
