Abstract

Over the past few years, e-learning and distance learning become popular in Malaysian education system. This is because technology has enabled students with time and distant limitation to pursue their studies. Since both concepts are relatively young in Malaysia, there are a lot of things that must be modified and improved. This study attempts to discuss the challenges in e-learning and distance learning. Data are gathered from both the secondary and primary sources. Text analysis of printed materials covers information from books, journals, newspaper articles and cuttings plus the Internet articles. These sources are used as the basis for hypothesis and background for the study. As to primary source, questionnaires are distributed to students who utilise the new system of learning. Students are from the distance learning programme and also 100-second year students of three higher learning institutions in Malaysia. Findings show that the challenges that must be overcome by all parties involved are threefold. Thus, it is hoped that the challenges will encourage academics to find solutions so that e-learning and distance learning will serve their purposes in education – to give fair opportunity to every Malaysian to study regardless of the geographical, physical or social boundaries.
