Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC): A preliminary study

Abstract

The challenges in Malaysia’s Vision 2020 should be faced with great determination and confidence by the society. But before they can progress, minor issues must be resolved between and amongst the members of the society. The challenge in language choice and use: between English and Bahasa Melayu must not be seen as a hindrance towards the development of the nation and country. This study attempts to have some insights into the process of Malaysians in trying to cope with Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) and Vision 2020 especially on the language issues. As such this study, which concentrates on theoretical and descriptive aspects of the issue, will try to highlight several problems and observation, followed by some suggestions. Since this is a semi-cultural study, the framework used is called “cultural continuum”. Findings in the study show Malaysians are not really aware that the global force nowadays directly or indirectly demanding them to be more pro-active in acquiring English language. Though with the implementation of Smart School which is aimed at preparing the students for MSC workforce, it is still not enough to ensure the students are able to cope in the realms of MSC. That is why the institutes of higher learning have to continue the process of equipping students with English language. However, the treatment and approach of English language in institutes of higher learning is rather vague. This is because of the time limitation for the 3-year degree program and the fact that English is just a mere pass-fail subject. In actual fact without the language, the society will never be able to compete and lead its own creation of MSC. This is the challenge that must be braved; the task of Malaysian’s institutes of higher learning has become greater ever to balance and serve the students’ needs.
