MAKING A STAFF

The staff is not only used in ceremonies; it is also a useful tool,
if not essential. It can be used as a weapon of defense, for traveling, and used to direct energy.
-EARTH SPIRITS PHILOSOPHY-

The staff is chest to chin high. It is best made of a hardwood, such as oak, walnut, and yew. The thickness should be what is comfortable for you to hold. It need not be perfectly straight, but easily used.

The staff should be cut in the waxing moon phase, and needs to dry thoroughly. (A small prayer of thanks should go out to the tree that donates itself for you.) You can leave the bark on or off that is up to you. It should however be sealed with a varnish or a clear resin. You can use fur or leather to make a handgrip. You can also add decorations, such as; feathers, bells, shells, or carvings. Some will inscribed their magical name into the staff.

There is a very simple ritual to consecrate your staff. First, you can do this at night or during the day. Though the time frame should correspond with the full moon. Using the opening of the circle ceremony in the Sacred Circle. You then start by facing east, say; Spirit of the east bless my staff. Repeating this in every direction. Close the circle.
