HERBS

Solstice or Summer Herbal Chant

Thyme and sage for sore throats,
Rosemary to darken hair,
Bergamot to make a tea,
Flax for me to wear.
Cecily for sour fruit,
Lemon balm for cake,
Chive to mix with salad and egg,
Mint a thirst to slake.
The monks of old with loving care,
Grew herbs and gave poor folk a share,
And cottage gardens still are found,
Where Nature’s medicines abound.

INTRODUCTION TO HERBS

Historically, plants have been the primary source of medicine for people of every culture.   Healing plants were mentioned in the Bible, and in other historical literature.  Plants that were used as medicines were referred to as “herbs” over 4000 years ago by European and the Mediterranean cultures, hence the word “herb”, being a derivation of “herbe” and the Latin word, “herba”.

Although, the term “herb” once only applied to non-woody plants. Today, “herb” refers to any part of any plant used for flavoring or medicine. Although the term “herb” can also be equated with food spices, it is generally used in reference to any plant, or any part of a plant, having nutritional and / or medicinal value(s). Additionally, an “herb” may be a fruit, a bark, a flower, a leaf, or a root, as well as a non-woody plant.

Many different herbal medicine systems are used today including: European, Native American, Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Western herbalism.  Despite differences in terminology and in the herbs used, there is a common thread that joins these systems: all of these systems treat the body as a 'whole', and they each utilize the energy of plants to 'work as needed' in synergy with the natural energy in each individual.

Because there are many different herbal systems, there are also many different ways of classifying herbs. Some systems being used over the years tend to classify herbs by 'plant part'; by humoral theories; by botanical family; by color; or by morphology.  A simple method is to identify five (5) major herbal categories:

Aromatic (volatile oils)
Astringent (tannins)
Bitter (phenol compounds, saponins and alkaloids)
Mucilaginous (polysaccharides)
Nutritive (food stuffs)

This classification system makes it easy to identify herbs using 'taste' and 'smell', and becomes useful when substitute one herb for another.

Herbs are considered the “best” when they are grown in the wild, untouched by industrial pollutants. Others prefer to harvest herbs that are cultivated indoors, away from all contaminants, in a controlled environment. Some herbalist's recommend gathering only certain herbs (depending on the seasons, the weather, and the time of day) to achieve the highest level of medicinal qualities. And still others may disregard this practice, and will purposefully plant herbs 'out of season' so that they will be available for sale year round.

Many believe that the energy with which the herbs are gathered is also very important, and should always be done with great spiritual awareness and prayerful thankfulness. And others feel that herbs should be handled with reverence and respect.

In addition to growth and gathering techniques, harvesting practices vary as well.   Recommendations may include taking the whole plant at once (buds, roots, seeds, leaves and blooms), or taking each part of the plant in a particular order, and only using younger, or older, plants.

There are also several ways to dispense herbs. The most common methods are herbal pastes, juices, decoctions, hot or cold infusions, powders, pills (tablets, capsules), aromatics, tinctures or extracts (alcohol or glycerol bases), liniments, syrups, poultices and fomentations, medicated oils, salves and ointments, lotions, teas, and whole herbs. Each type is good for specific ailments, and often may be used together (i.e. internally and externally for an external wound) to take full advantage of the healing attributes of each.

All these choices, like others, should be integrated with both your personal external needs and your internal ideals for the best possible results. An experienced herbalist can help you decide which system is right for you. Please be aware that herbs are foods. And like any other food, herbs should be taken in moderation. Always follow the manufacturer's directions for use.

WHAT ABOUT HERBALISM AND SPIRITUALITY?

Upon examination of the ancient belief systems of the Chinese, Indian, and Native Americans, a mutual earth centered religion is evident.   This religion shaped humanities view and relationship with the Great Spirit, and the relationships between all of humankind.  This was a belief system which also demonstrated a medical view of illness, and utilized herbs in concordance with religious belief.

An Earth Centered-Nature religion still permeates herbalism today by various expressions.  Herbalism is part of the RELIGION of NATURE, representing a balance of head and heart; that relies more on artful intuition than precise scientific reasoning.

Nature religions ascribed a divine expression to the forces of nature, and to the earth itself, and advance a philosophy of divine inter connection with all of it’s inhabitants.

In working with nature, pagans are simply respecting and paying homage to the spiritual forces they  observe.  Nature is perceived as the domain of the gods and of spirits.

The philosophy of paganism usually recognizes a state, in which, spiritual beings on earth, and in the rest of creation, become aware of the “oneness of creation”.

Herbalism is a vehicle to express the oneness of creation, and foster the divinity of nature and the earth.

The more we turn our attention toward the nature of our relationship with the environment, the more profound become the insights into the close embrace we share----of the many ways, in which, our ecological inter-relatedness shows itself. The art and science of herbal medicine is, for many people, the most unexpected----we are ALL ONE.

The Gaia concept of our earth as, “The Greek goddess of the earth-a living entity with the equivalent of senses, intelligence, memory and the capacity to act-she is the earth spirit-she is ecology"

The Complete Illustrated Guide to Ayruveda demonstrates the Hindu concept of oneness: “Today for instance, people everywhere, are beginning to understand concepts like Gaia, the ONENESS of the organism of earth. This happens by Pitta, the force of the intellect, or Vishnu the preserver (a Hindu god), who keeps balance on earth between the spiritual and demonic.”

Herbalism is incorporated into this Gaian philosophy in The Elements of Herbalism, where; “Healing is a Gaian quality, as it is a personal expression of balance and wholeness. The relationship between healing plants and people, can be seen as Gaia in action----the context of ecological embrace.”  Herbal healing is “an expression of very real and practical links with Gaia, there is an activation of ecological cycles for healing.   A unique opportunity is created by the simple act of taking herbal medicines----such healing, goes beyond the treatment of pathologies and alleviation of bodily suffering-rather, it is in the realm of the transcendental, the ineffable transformation that comes through the touch of the Great Spirit.

According to Wicca-a Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, Wicca is a “religion, centering around reverence for nature, as seen in the Goddess and the God. The Goddess is nature, the Universal Mother. The God is the consort of the Goddess.”

The Roots of Healing-A Woman’s Book of Herbs, conveys: “We understand that the primary “LIFE FORCE” of earth is contained within plants. We trust in earth’s healing abilities, and therefore, have continued to call upon herbs for nutritional, medicinal, and spiritual help. Our reverence for the mysteries of birth, life, death, and renewal, guides us to live in harmony with nature, closely following her rhythms. We are connected to changing seasons, the weather, and the cycles of the moon----We are known in our communities as herbalists, midwives, witches, nurses, and wise women----We have continued to practice our healing arts despite centuries of persecution by religious organizations, governments, and medical establishments----Over time, I realized that a presence of unconditional love was emanating from earth herself through herbs. This presence, I came to realize, is divine female wisdom, the great Goddess."

Consider the view expressed that, “herbs are gifts that teach and heal. Through them, we can learn to hear the whisperings of earth herself. Listen for their songs. Let yourself remember the wise woman, who lives within you.”

In Witchcraft, we discern that, “Wicca (an alternative name for modern witchcraft) is a positive, shamanistic, nature religion, with two main deities honored and worshipped in Wiccan rites: the Goddess (the female aspect and a deity related to the ancient Mother Goddess in her triple aspects of maiden, mother and crone) and her consort, the Horned God (the male aspect). Wicca (which is also known as the ‘craft of the wise’ or often just ‘the craft’) is considered, by many, to be
both a monistic and pantheistic religion. In simple terms, it is a positive nature based religion, preaching brotherly love, and harmony with, and respect for, all life forms. It is very similar to Native American spirituality.”

According to the late Scott Cunningham, a well published author, “Earth is a manifestation of divine energy, and reveals her secrets ‘to Wiccans’, who listen to the earth. To be outdoors, is to be in
the temple and surrounded by sanctity.”

SO YOU WANT TO BE A HERBALIST?

There is no shortcut to mastery of Herbalism or Herbology. Courses and schools that purport to offer 'master herbalist' (MH) or other misleading degrees, often based on a 'quickie' weekend or a single weeklong workshop, have no guaranteed legal professional standing.  Be that as it may, there is a growing number of professional herbalists throughout North America.  Many of these are graduates of Herb Courses, which represent the very best value and training.

One can learn about hundreds of herbs, but that knowledge is clinically worthless without its integration into a traditional system of diagnosis and treatment.  Some courses practice a specific modality and others integrate the main systems of herbal medicine.  These are based on the traditional practice of Western, Chinese and Ayurvedic (East Indian) herbal medicine.

We believe that herbal medicine is not just a profession, but is an inspired calling.  It is to this inner calling, as well as the increasing numbers of students who feel drawn to the study of herbal medicine, that we dedicate this page. If you are one of those who feel such inner promptings, read this article and visit the links below.  Come and journey down this path of wonder and learning. A wise person once said that whatever energy is expended towards education is never lost.   Visit a reputable school and sign up for a course in herbalism today.

Investigate each school you find on the Web.  Determine if the basic course covers all the relevent knowledge areas and basic principles including:

  • specific remedies for different conditions,
  • herbal therapeutics,
  • the use of food and herbs in health and healing,
  • and the foundations of Herbal theory.
  • The course should also lay the groundwork for completing a Professional Herbalist Course.

The course should provide the essential principles of herbs, including diet, energy, tastes and the principles of disease and diagnosis within the frameworks of Western, Ayurvedic or Chinese medical systems. Herbal preparation, therapeutics and formulary.

The next course you take should be a Professional Herbalist Course which is usually intended for the herbal professional and for those seeking delve deeper into the theory and practice of advanced Herbology. It should include additional studies in diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The course should consists of:

  • An extensive and comprehensive materia medica, including most herbs and medicines from around the world.
  • A section emphasizing the clinical diagnosis of specific diseases and the maintenance of health.
  • A section which brings together all of the knowledge of the previous lessons to enable the student be a competent herbal consultant.

Safety With Herbs

I want to talk to you about Safety. There are a lot of common misconceptions out there regarding herbal healing, and I hope with this to be able to clear some of those up. Safety with any treatment is essential for overall health and well-being, whether it be allopathic or alternative in nature.

Herbs Are Medicine!! They should be treated with the very same respect that most of us give to prescription drugs. Many herbs can be harmful in large or prolonged dosages, as can most anything in this life, I might add. Many herbs can be addictive after long term improper use. Some are poisonous. Some can have toxic side effects if not properly balanced with herbs that counteract those effects. They should not ever be used indiscriminately without the proper guidance of a health care professional. They should not ever be used on a daily basis without the proper guidance of a health care professional. Many people feel that just because herbs are natural, they can't be hurt by them. Nothing can be further from the truth.

More Is Not Better!! Many people feel that if a little makes me feel better, a lot will make me feel fantastic. This is not the case with herbs. Dosages need to be carefully controlled, as with any medicine. You wouldn't swallow a whole bottle of antibiotics at one time to kill a bacterial infection. Apply the same caution to herbal medicines. It is possible to overdose! Herbs work slowly, with the body and its own natural defenses. You must give herbs time to work before changing your dosages. In this modern world of a "pill for everything", folks have come to expect instant cures, instant relief. You should note that with chronic illness, even prescription drugs take time to work. The same applies with herbal medicines. Give them time to work. Support them with a proper diet, with exercise, and with proper attention to yourself. If the herbs aren't working for you, then you either have the wrong combinations, the wrong dosages, or you aren't adhering to a proper healing regimen. Contact a health care professional for guidance as to what works for you.

One Dose Does Not Fit All!! You wouldn't give a small child the same amount of cough syrup you give an adult. The same applies with herbal medicines. The dose must fit the individual. The dosages need to be based on the illness treated, your past and present medical history, your age, your weight, and several other factors. Combinations must be chosen so as not to interfere with any specifics with your particular body, and so as not to further aggravate that which is being treated. A health care professional can help you choose the proper combinations and dosages for your unique body and health concerns.

Tell Your Doctor What You Are Taking!! You wouldn't hide the fact that you are a smoker or a drinker or have a heart condition from your physician. You shouldn't hide the fact that you are using herbal medicines, either. Some herbs can have serious adverse reactions when improperly mixed with prescription drugs. Just because they are natural doesn't mean there can't be reactions! Many chemical drugs are derived from healing plant constituents. So you could be causing a serious problem for yourself if you are getting far too much of something that is supposed to be helping you. There is no reason to hide. Herbal healing is becoming much more mainstream today, and many physicians are learning about herbs as medicine. If yours isn't, then help educate him or her. Or find a doctor that can help you work with your herbs. Most communities have herbal professionals, naturopathic doctors, Chinese Medicine practitioners, and other professionals that are trained in the proper uses of the healing herbs. Seek one out before you make some major mistakes with your precious body.

But The Drug Companies Are Recommending Herbs!! Indeed, there are growing numbers of drug companies that are jumping on the natural health bandwagon. However, this does not give you license to just use whatever you see in hopes that it will improve your condition. Again, most herbs should not be used on a daily basis over the long term. That can actually do more harm than not using an herb at all. Educate yourself before reaching for that one-a-day herb. You may not need it for what you think you do. Just because it has a "name" behind it does not make it safe for continued daily use. Seek guidance if you are confused or unsure of what to do with these new products.

Following these guidelines will help you to get the most from your herbal treatments. You will be healthier and happier if you don't fall for media hype. Stick to what is known. Don't indiscriminately choose an herb without knowing exactly what to expect from it, good and bad. Always treat your herbal medicines with respect, and they will do the same for you.

Gathering, Storing, and Using your Herbs

GATHERING: When gathering or harvesting your herbs, first be absolutely sure you know what you are gathering! This is very important when gathering plants from the wild. Be absolutely certain you know what the plant is before you attempt to use it. If you are not sure of a particular plant, or it "looks like" something but could be something else, leave it alone. You would be better off to purchase the herb through a store or mail order. The alternative may leave you dead. If you care about our natural plants, you will prefer to purchase or grow what you need. Today's herbal needs are creating quite a strain on the numbers of medicinal plants in the wild.

Know what part of the plant you need. Some plants are used in their entirety, others only specific parts. When you are gathering plants from the wild, remember not to take all of a particular species you may find in an area. Leave some to grow and seed and flourish for the next time you need them. Removing all of a group of plants is rude, and the Goddess would not be pleased. Give thanks to the plants you take for your uses. Sprinkle around some of their seeds, to help them propogate. Give them an offering, i.e. some natural fertilizer, a prayer, etc. in return for your uses. When taking leaves or branches of a plant, leave plenty for the plant to survive. You should offer the same respect to those plants you gather from your own gardens. Be kind to the Mother and all She has to offer, and She will reward you for your efforts.

The parts of the plant above ground should be harvested in the morning, before the heat of the sun has a chance to wilt them. It is preferable to do so when the dew is still on the plants. Leaves should be harvested before the buds and blooms appear, and flowers should be harvested before the fruits and seeds appear. Bark and roots should be harvested in the early spring, just as the plant is beginning to show its leaf buds, or in the fall, just as the leaves are turning. Don't strip bark from around a tree trunk, as this will kill it. Instead, strip bark from small patches, or particular limbs, to preserve the mother plant for later use, and to preserve its life.

When using an entire plant, it is customary to hang the plant upside down in a dry area free from pests to allow the plant to dry. Make sure your herbs have dried thoroughly before storing them for further use, or you may discover that you have a moldy mess instead of a medicinal herb. Roots should be carefully washed, scraped, and chopped into small pieces to be sure they dry uniformly and thoroughly. Bulbs are tied together and strung up to dry.

The dried portions can then be stored according to your needs. Roots are usually ground into powder for use, or left in small chunks for uses in decoctions, tinctures, and syrups. Leaves are stored in their entirety, or crumbled for use in teas. The same applies for blossoms. Store your herbs in air-tight containers. The best containers to use are colored glass. The herb then does not pick up impurities from plastics, and does not eat through your plastics, as can happen. Store in a dry, cool area, and keep out of the light. This is the reason for using colored glass. Light can often break down the healing properties of your gathered herbs, shortening their shelf life and rendering them nearly useless after a short period of time. If stored properly, the shelf life of dried herbs is approximately one year. Tinctures can be stored for up to two years. Capsules should be used within one year. Once an herb has been ground, it shortens the amount of time the herb is effective. So do pay careful attention to when you have purchased or stored an herb, for maximum effectiveness.

When you use one of your herbs, whether for healing, cooking, or for magick, you should once again give thanks to the Mother for Her bounty.

Teas

The herbs that will be used for herbal teas are generally the cut and sifted form, or the crumbled dried leaves and/or flowers. Herbs should always be prepared in nonmetallic containers. Steep the herbs in a nonmetallic container with water that has just been brought to a boil. This is an infusion, and is used for the more delicate herbs to prevent destroying their healing agents.

A decoction is used to extract the healing agents from herbs that are roots and barks. The herbs are simmered in a nonmetallic cooking container for about one hour. Simmer uncovered until the amount of water is reduced by one half. Those herbs that contain important volatile oils should be simmered in a tightly covered pot.

Don't add table sugar to herbal teas. If a sweetener is needed, use pure, unmolested honey for its nutritional benefits, or use stevia.

Bolus

A bolus is a suppository. It is made by combining powdered herbs with cocoa butter. The two are mixed together until it is the consistency of stiff pie dough. It is then refrigerated to harden and preserve. Allow to come to room temperature before use. Roll into strips and cut into pieces about one inch long. Boluses are inserted into the rectum for treating hemorrhoids, and into the vagina for treating vaginal infections and irritations, as well as tumors. Boluses are used at night. The cocoa butter will of course melt with your body heat, so take precautions to protect clothing and bedding. Residues of the bolus should be rinsed away the next morning.

Oils

Oil extracts are made from fresh herbs that contain volatile oils used for healing. Fresh herbs are necessary for the extraction of the oils. The fresh herbs are crushed with a mortar and pestle. Olive or sesame oil is then added, at the ratio of one pint of oil for every two ounces of herbs. The mixture is allowed to stand in a warm place, out of direct light, for three days. The oils are stored in dark, glass containers. After the three days, add one capsule of Vitamin E to each bottle for preserving the extracted oils. This is another process that is best done on the new moon.

Syrups

Syrups are used for treating coughs and sore throats, and make it easy to give herbs to children. Two ounces of herb are added to a quart of water in a nonmetallic container, and boiled down slowly and gently until about a pint of liquid is left. Strain while it is still warm, and add two ounces of honey and/or glycerine. Lemon oil or juice can also be added for flavor. Store in a dark glass container.

Capsules

Capsules are the best way to take herbs that do not taste good. They are also the best way to take herbs that need to be ingested over a long period of time, or for those of us who don't have time at work to make herbal teas. It is best to purchase finely powdered herbs for this purpose. The small "0" sized capsules are used, or the larger "00". The powdered herbs are blended together, if an herbal combination is desired. Then separate the two halves of the capsule, and fill each half. Then carefully put the two halves back together. Take according to the needs of the treatment.

Tinctures

Tinctures are easy to make, and a very convenient way to make use of the healing herbs in today's fast society. They are made with the more potent herbs that are generally not taken as herbal teas.

Tinctures are made by combining 1 to 4 ounces of a powdered or thoroughly crushed herb with one pint of alcohol. The alcohol most often used is vodka. The amount of liquid should be more than the herbs can absorb, so you may need to add more as the days go by. It is shaken daily and allowed to stand in a warm place, out of direct light, for two weeks. The liquid is poured through a cloth, such as layers of cheesecloth. The herbs that remain are squeezed thoroughly to remove as much of the liquid from them as possible. Keep the tincture stored in a dark glass bottle or jar. Tinctures are used by the drop. Don't be afraid of the alcohol content - if you want to be sure the alcohol won't affect you, or you are a recovering alcoholic, drop the recommended number of tincture drops into a cup of hot water, wait a few moments, and then drink. The alcohol will evaporate. Tinctures can be made of single herbs, or herbal combinations, depending upon your needs. It is traditional magick to begin your tinctures on the night of the new moon, and strain on the full moon, so that the waxing powers of the moon extract the maximum amount of healing agents from the herbs.

Creams

Creams are used to treat skin conditions of all kinds. They can be made by melting petroleum jelly and adding the herbs, although that is rather messy. A better method is to boil approximately 1 cup of the herb(s) to be used in 3 to 4 cups of water, in a non-metallic container, for about 15 minutes for leafy herbs and 30 minutes for root herbs to extract the volatile oils. You can then strain the herbs out, or leave them in if you so desire, depending on the cream you are making. Add 5 ounces of sesame or olive oil to the water remaining and continue to simmer over low heat until all of the water has evaporated. Melt 2 ounces of beeswax, and stir into the oil mixture. TIP: try to have the wax and the oil near the same temp, and stir like crazy! After the mixture cools a bit, add 2 teaspoons of Vitamin E oil as a preservative, and mix it in well. Pour into containers and allow to cool completely. Most creams will keep for up to one year.

Protection From Negative Energies
Herbal Sachet recipe and Empowering

Ingredients:
 1 tsp. dried Anise seed (any kind of Anise)
 1 ½ tsp. dried whole Cloves
 petals of 1 small dried red Rose
 2 tsp. dried Rosemary
 6 dried Bay leaves
 9 inch by 9 inch square white cotton cloth
 6 inch purple cord or yarn

Mix all ingredients well, then place into the center of white cloth in a pile. Bring each corner up to the center one at a time, in a clockwise motion. when all corners are up and touching, there will be four folds sticking out. In a clockwise motion, bring the corners of these folds to the center as well. Take the purple cord or yarn and wrap it around the cloth 3 times, just above the high spot of the herbs. Tie three knots, and let the ends hang.

 EMPOWERING THE HERBAL SACHET:
Sit in a quiet place, preferably outdoors, and hold the sachet cupped in your hands. Close your eyes and imaging a white traveling through your arms and into the sachet. Feel safety, feel protected. See yourself standing surrounded by a white light. See it coming from the sachet.
Empower the sachet once a week, and make a new sachet once a month.
Continue using the sachet until you feel that you no longer need it.
All the ingredients can be found at your local grocery store except for the dried rose and the cloth and cord. Find or buy a red rose and hang it upside down by the stem for 3 days in a warm, dry place to dry.

After Bath Splash

This recipe is invigorating after you get out of the tub or shower. I like it after a morning shower. It’s a great wake up. And it is SO easy. It uses what ever plant material you would like to use, or you can make it with essential oil.
 1 glass canning jar
 1 cup plant material
 2 cups vodka

Place plants in the jar and cover with vodka. Let stand for 2 weeks, shaking daily to infuse the scent. strain out the plants, and bottle appropriately. Use as much as you like, this scent is very light.
You can do the same thing a lot faster with pure essential oils. Pour vodka into the jar, and add 2 droppers full of essential oil. let sit for a couple of days shaking daily. Bottle and use.
