National Portrait
Gallery
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Clara Barton worked in
this building (the third oldest in Washington, D.C.), which
was the Patent Office at the time. Today this building is
the Smithsonian Museum's National Portrait Gallery.

American Red Cross National Headquarters
The National Headquarters of the American Red
Cross is located at Seventeenth and D Streets, N.W. in
Washington, D.C. Trowbridge and Livingston designed this
building in 1915, which after Miss Barton's death in 1912
became the first permanent home of the American Red
Cross.

Clara Barton National Historic
Site
Miss Barton's home in Glen Echo, Maryland reflects her
resourcefulness. Built in 1891, she first used the house
as a warehouse for the Red Cross, then modified it for
living quarters and offices in 1897.

This room in Clara Barton's home and former Red Cross headquarters (now the
Clara Barton National Historic Site), bears many
treasures from her time. Note the portrait on the wall in
the center of the picture: the charcoal-enhanced photo of
Miss Barton at age 54 is the likeness of her that appears
in the essay on this Web site.
