Saint Athanasius was the 20th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark. He is the patron saint of our church. He is referred to as "The Defender of the Faith" and the "Father of Orthodoxy" and is considered one of the Four Great Fathers of the East by the Roman Catholic Church. He attended the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea as but a deacon, and successfully defended the faith against the arian heresy; truly, scholars have proclaimed that if it wasn't for Athanasius, the whole world would have been converted to Arianism.
