SONNET #15 REMEMBER
I have not been to Flanders field where poppies grow
And small white crosses cover the ground row by row.
I did not see my grandfather, who fought in France
And died far from home and family without a chance
To say goodbye to children young, and wife so small.
I sat upon my fathers knee, a tiny child not grown at all,
And listened without understanding that once again
We were at war. I saw the look on fathers face, it was pain.
His words touched my tender heart, "Did my father die in vain?"
He was too sick to fight himself but many we loved went again
To fight for freedom, King and country brave. They fought the fight,
Some lived to fight another day, but others died, went to a better light
Than the tormented light of war. As we treasure the freedom they gave
Let us never forget those who died, They gave their all to the grave.
