Oh sleep that heals a breaking heart
With her tender touch of sweet forgetfulness.
And the sin sore soul is relieved in part
And there embraced for a few hours in her gentleness.
For the care worn and weary, sleep like a loving wife,
Surrounds and succours and gives that needed rest,
So to start each day anew ready to face again the strife
That in this encumbered world besets and tries and tests
All who tread this worldly path, and there are none
Who need her not,but should in all true humbleness
Pray fervently that sleep be there's ere the night is gone,
That they be blessed by sleeps gentle powerfulness.
And so blessed sleep desert me not this night
That I may on the morrow, serve my God aright.
