A LOVING REBUTTAL TO DRYDEN’S POEM ON
THE ART OF POETRY
When one is in tune with nature and with God
And pure thoughts are nurtured in rich soil,
One sees a flower or tree in perfect symmetry ,
The first thoughts are best and to change would spoil
That first inspiration, the first spec of delight
That comes gushing like a refreshing spring all to feed
With poetic beauty as those first sweet ideas flow free
As they come newborn, meeting many a thirsty need.

The moment of the new moon rising to start anew
Her ride across the star studied sky is best as first seen,
So the thoughts are the best, changes would dim the vison.,
That exquisite moment when my thoughts were keen.

I saw a lake so still I dared not breath, no ripple to make,
A perfect reflection, I saw double beauty come before my eyes.
Those first words I wrote described how my heart rejoiced,
To change anything, save spellings, would dim the wondrous prize,
And although for John Dryden changing would be for him right,
For me, my flowing thoughts like torrents my feelings are freed,
I read and reread and those words seem just right for me
And of change in thought were word I see no real need.

There would be loss of innocence, loss of first magic impression,
Yes, there is a need to scrutinise in improve any little mistake,
But change not the feeling nor the mood that we poets paint,
Trust in that first moment when inspiration in you does break.
