More poems about Winter
A COLD DECEMBER DAY
The biting wind blew all the clouds away,
So the sun sails unmarred this bitter day,
Vivid blue the sky and cold yellow the sun,
It seems as though winter has truly begun.
Ice on the rivers, yet no snow can be found
On gardens or farm land, hard is the ground,
But as you look through the window and see
The bright blue sky with the sun sailing free
You think that warm summer days are back,
With flowers and leaves and of heat no lack.
Then you see the leafless branches of the trees,
And watch them sway in that bitter cold breeze,
See the frost on the cars standing in the street,
That is how we know its winter we will greet
As we venture out of doors with places to go,
And the earth is rock hard, yet not covered in snow.
Mocking and heatless the sun in that vivid blue sky
That silenced most birds made many of them fly
South where the sun still gives both warmth and light
And shares equal time with her sister the night.
December here we know will bring winter cold
And strong, but you should bring snow we are told
To be a blanket cosy and warm for the helpless earth
And to give us a wonderland of great beauty and worth.
