I CANNOT HELP IT

When we do or say childish, cruel things,
Act inappropriately, so disapproval bring
Upon ourselves, we may hear that person say
I cannot help it, because I am made that way.

If we take away the pride that is in that heart,
Help them realize that they can do their part
By wanting to really change, start life anew,
But you have to say, changing it is up to you.

Desire should come from a heart contrite and broken,
Sorry for the person you were, sad for words spoken
That crushed a soul, or deeds done in meanness or spite,
Willing to turn around and be a shining beacon bright.

It is no easy step to take, it’s hard the fault to tame,
But every worthy person should have that simple aim,
It’s Satan that tells us ‘that is me’ so I need not change,
But the still small voice whispers, you have a higher range.

I can change but I must have a humble willing heart,
Be willing to realize I’m wrong, willing to do my part,
Put old habits behind me, start afresh this new day,
So be set aright on a more glorious happier way.
