HOMEMADE HORSERADISH

Most of the family like horseradish, the hotter the better for me,
Eaten with roast beef and gravy and Yorkshire pudding see
On the plate on sundays with Brussel sprouts and carrot sweet
With roast potatoes and mashed ones, a real Sunday treat.

Horseradish is quite expensive and about three bucks a small jar,
And with mot people digging into it does not go very far,
So we thought we would try make some buy a fresh horseradish,
And see how much better would taste our delicious Sunday dish.

Home we came from the store with a small horseradish root,
You should have seen us grating, you would have had a hoot.
First the tears began to flow, faster than the pouring rain
Then soon after lots of coughs and splutters came.
Windows flung wide open so we could try and breath well,
Grating with eyes closed, sniffing often so that nothing fell
Into the fuming horseradish as we worked till all was done
Then beating in the vinegar then more sniffs and tears did come.

At last our task completed, enough horseradish for a year or two
Saved ourselves some money and cleared out our sinuses too,
I hope it will not dissolve the plate when we one day serve it out,
But we’ll remember horseradish day for a long time, without a doubt.
