COMFORTING SOUNDS

There are some sounds that make you think of home,
You have that deep feeling when far you do roam,
Many spring to my mind and heart quite readily
And often bring joy, comfort and memories to me.

One is the sound of folks washing lots of dishes,
The clatter of china, then the brooms fast swishes
As the floor is swept and everywhere made clean,
The laughter as they worked, home visions are seen.

Another is the crackle of a roaring fire so warm,
A welcome sound, you hope it will last till dawn
Brings a new day, familiar faces with tender care
All gathered around, longing for lost ones to be there.

But one sound that brings memories flooding back
That speaks of a home where of love there is no lack,
It is the tick, tock and the quarterly chimes so clear
Of the great old grandfather clock to all so very dear.

When, as a small child I lay sick in my tiny bed,
I could hear kitchen noises and knew I’d be fed,
I’d be carried down to sit by the crackling fire,
Hear the comforting tick thro’ the night and never tire.

So now in our home a little smaller you will see
A grandmother clock on the wall, old as can be,
But the tick, tock and the sweet quarterly chime
Will be a strength and comfort to the end of my time.
