INDIAN SUMMER
Kissed by a gentle zephyr on a mid October day
As it sends high white fluffy clouds slowly away,
After a frost and days of miserable cold rain,
Summer has returned, for a few blest days again.
We have the joy of walking along in the warm sun,
Flowers rejuvenated as if summer had just begun.
Although the birds know better, they are ready to fly,
They are not deceived by the false heat passing by.
But I can take an Indian summer with its warm breeze,
As a little longer the colourful leaves stay on the trees,
And things still grow in the garden, flowers bloom again,
It gives us a little respite from winters coming cruel pain.
To awake and find the temperature still hovering high,
Awake to see the ascending sun still warm in the sky,
Gives us a false hope that this year the cold will not come,
But we do live here in Canada when all is said and done.
We know the frost, snow and ice will surely come our way
So we will always make the most of an Indian summer day,
But we have been given an extra treat this year you see,
It has lasted a week so far and that is quite fine with me.
