Review by Brad Owens:

I was at the June 28th show at "Club Denim" in Guelph Ontario. The show was opened by a new Canadian
band by the name of "Smoother" - who are from Hamilton Ontario. The opening act sucked, despite having a
major record and a single that is currently in the Top 50 Canadian Singles Chart. Anyway, to the point... this was
the first 54-40 show I have ever been to, and I have never considered myself much of a fan. However, after seeing
their show and being reminded of how much I know of their catalogue, I am a TOTAL fan! Their show was awesome
and I have to say how much I appreciated the fact that they spend a lot of the time on stage communicating with the
audience. It might sound a little queer, but I really loved the way that Phil has a permanent smile while on stage. I have
been to MANY concerts, from the obscure to the main stream, but this concert ranks high for the entertainment value.
The new album sounds so delicious live and I am sure will only grow their popularity. The way that the band handled the,
encore was a lot of fun!!! They ended the set with "Ocean Pearl" with the crowd chanting "I got an ocean pearl". Neil was
left alone on stage and held a 5 minute (or so it seemed) sing along with the audience just singing the chorus over and over.
He eventually left and the crowd started screaming for an encore. However, they did not come back until the audience
returned to singing "I got an ocean pearl" at which point the band picked up and finished the song - as though they had
never left. It was completely different than anything I have seen before. I thought you might be interested in the set order,
so here goes:

1) Baby Ran
2) Unbend
3) Crossing a Canyon
4) Lies to Me
5) She's a Jones
6) Sunday Girl
7) One Day
8) Lost and Lazy
9) Big U Up
10) Radio Love Song
11) Nice to Love You
12) I Go Blind
13) Blue Sky
14) One Gun
15) Casual Viewing
16) Since When
17) She La
18) Ocean Pearl

Encores:
1) Assoholic
2) You Should Come Over
3) Love You All

I was shocked by how much of their catalogue I knew word for word, and by how much fun these guys are!
I hope to see another of their shows real soon! 1
