October 25, 2000 Fresh 54•40 Cut! 54•40 are climbing the rock charts with their new single, "Unbend." The video for the tune uses real footage from the band's recent trek through Thailand to show off Bangkok's lively nightlife. Singer Neil Osborne describes the experience: "At night in Bangkok, the famous street Khao San Road was alive and full of action. Every lane running off this street catered to a different pleasure: drugs, girls, boys, whatever. Our video director Marc and I went down one lane to shoot the line 'live only live by selling things, live only love by selling things.' There was a baby elephant on a leash. Behind it was a neon-lit brothel with girls lined up outside. For about a dollar you could feed the animal bananas. He would take them from your hand with his trunk. I purchased a bunch and fed them all to 'Babar.' Then I started to sing a take, when I felt the elephant's trunk reach out and grab my ...banana. For a brief second I was frozen. Then he let go. Earlier we sat ringside during a Thai boxing match. Three rows of ringside seats separated from the standing fans by chicken wire. The fans were ecstatic, constantly shouting and placing bets during the match. Before each contest, the boxers would do a ritualistic sort of dance in the ring to evoke the correct vibes." Also included in the video are snippets from recent shows in Toronto and Vancouver. Explore under the cover of darkness with one of Canada's leading rock bands.
