Dr. Anderson at  ICGUAA Meeting

Dr. Glenn Anderson came to the Indiana Chapter of the Gallaudet University Alumni Association (GUAA) meeting at the MCL Cafeteria near Castleton Mall on Saturday, February 12. Dr. Anderson is the chairman of the Gallaudet University Board of Trustees and is the boss of President King Jordan!
Dr. Anderson had plenty of Gallaudet news to share at this GUAA meeting. The Old Gym is now being renovated at the cost of 1.7 million dollars. The Old Gym is now known as the Peikoff Alumni House, and the GUAA national office will provide 1.2 million dollars, with Gallaudet University providing the remaining $500,000. Many people already know that the Hughes Gymnasium with the swimming pool and dance theatre is torn down and the site is used for a parking lot. Mr. Anderson announced that a new building called the Language, Communication, Culture and History Center will be built in that site. The new Language, Communication, Culture and History Center will have the Gallaudet Archives and the Deaf Studies Department. This new building will cost 20 million dollars, but Sorensen Video Relay has promised to give 5 million dollars for this new building.
Gallaudet University has now 1200-1300 undergraduate students and 500 graduate students. A few hearing students are freshmen and sophomores at Gallaudet now, and the college has a new major: a B.A. degree in interpreting. Gallaudet has a $140 million budget every year, and it has a separate $157 million endowment fund (investment fund). In 1989, the endowment fund was only $10 million! Interest funds from the endownment fund help pay for faculty salaries and student scholarships. About 30 to 35% of Gallaudet faculty are deaf, and Gallaudet needs deaf teachers with Ph.D degrees. More than 51% Deaf are on the Gallaudet Board of Trustees.
This fall Gallaudet University will have its homecoming football game and alumni reunion. This fall there will be a special program to honor Gallaudet's first black graduate (Andrew J. Foster). Mr. Foster was from Africa, and he went back to Africa to establish 31 deaf schools throughout Africa! Many graduates from these African deaf schools have gone to Gallaudet, too. A special memorial to Andrew Foster will be dedicated on the Gallaudet campus this fall.--Submitted by Mike Reis
Editor's note: Dr. Anderson gave his excellent presentation  on Celebrating Our Black Deaf Achievers to audience of about 60 people at GIDC that evening.

Excerpted from DeafDigest Re: ISD Sup't

DeafDigest some weeks back said the superintendent of Indiana School for the Deaf stepped down. The school board will not be appointing an interim superintendent; instead the school management team will operate the school. The board hopes to have a new superintendent in place by the start of the next school year.  DeafDigest, February 27, 2005

Riddles for you...
1. A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven't eaten in 3 years.
Which room is safest for him?
2. A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be?
