18 (Friday)--American History of Laurent Clerc by Albert J. Hlibok, 7 to 9 pm at Greater Indianapolis Deaf Club. Sponsored by the D.E.A.F. Network. The lecture will cover the life and successes of Laurent Clerc, a deaf Frenchman who came to America in order to help establish the first deaf school. Laurent Clerc, in his 53 years in America, positively inspired an education system for deaf individuals and advocated for the equality and well being of all deaf Americans.
Bio-sketch: Albert Hlibok was born deaf, received a construction engineering degree from
Manhattan College, New York City. Advocacy, history and traveling are his favorite hobbies. He was involved in many communities such as President of Empire State Association for three terms, and co-founder of American Professional Society of the Deaf. Now he is on the board of Lexington School for the Deaf. Married and retired, he and his wife, Peggy have four children, and ten grandchildren. Recognizing that Laurent Clerc was not recognized by the general public, Hlibok has taken an intensive interest in the subject. His e-mail address is Pahlibok@aol.com.

2/9--ISD 64 Howe 55
What an amazing game and one of the best games of the year! Indiana Deaf Hoosiers tasted a HARD FOUGHT win, stunning the visiting 3A Howe of Indianapolis public schools, 64-55. Howe is a big school with an enrollment of between 800 to 900 students. They are heavily scheduled mostly against other 3A and 4A schools including Arlington, ranked the #1 overall 4A team in the state of Indiana, who they will play this Saturday.
The visitors jumped out early at the start of the game in the first quarter, 12-18. However, the deaf hoosiers countered with a 14-2 run capped off with the superb sub 6'5" Junior guard/forward, Sam Davis' trey, and Freshman 6'1" guard Colin Whited's spark off the bench with 6 points, giving us a 26-20 advantage. Senior Bradley Pollard hit the buzzer shot to take us to a 34 to 26 lead heading into halftime.
Visiting Howe applied heavy man to man full court defensive pressure, forcing the deaf hoosiers to cause turnovers, finishing the game with 30 turnovers. They tried to cut the deficit to 3 points when Junior guard, Drew Hawkins stepped up and made 6 striaght points down the stretch to keep a 9 point lead, 46-37 in the third quarter.
In the final quarter of the game, the teams traded baskets before Senior point guard, Jon Mowl, who was playing with the flu-ravaged and 103 fever, made key drives to the basket. The deaf hoosiers made the free throws in the final two minutes of the game, 8 -10, sending the visiting Howe packing.
Senior 6'6" Marcus Terry physically played a great and brillant defensive game against a 6'8" and 290 lbs sophomore center averaging 16 ppg and 15 rpg. He limited the Howe center to 6 points while Marcus netted 11 points with 8 boards. With the win, Deaf Hoosiers improves to 14-3. Next game is against International next Tuesday at ISD.

2/8-- Sectionals ISD 30 Eminence 31
We came to Eminence HS to play our first sectional game against Ritter this evening. As we started the game, we found their game plan was simply to box Amanda Krieger the entire 32 minutes. However we managed
to keep the game close until our personal fouls and turnovers piled up against us. Although w tied it up and nearly brought the game into overtime; they took away our hopes by making their final free throw at the last 6 seconds of regulation. We lost 30-31. That concludes our basketball season with 12 wins and 10 losses. Adios.
IHSAA Sectionals, ISD girls basketball will play Ritter at Eminence HS on Tuesday, Feb 8th at 7 p.m.
If we win, we will play Eminence on Friday, Feb. 11th at 6 p.m. at Eminence HS. If we win again, we will advance to Finals on Saturday, Feb. 12th at 7:30 pm at Eminence HS.
Single game: $5 Season ticket (all games): $9
Directions to Eminence HS: 6760 North State Road 42, Eminence, IN 46125 765-528-2221
Take I-70 West to Exit #51 (Little Point) and turn left, go back over interstate to T-road. This will be IN-42, turn right and follow IN-42 for about four miles. The school sits on IN-42, and there will be a lot of turns before you get to the school. Come and support our Lady Orioles!
