Ask your brother what kind of pistol Boudette was carrying. Then ask him what Deputy Dawg was carrying. Then ask him whether the holes in Deputy Dawg's patrol car were made by Colt 1911 .45 auto rounds.

From my distant understanding of the case, those answers tell the tale.

Another pertinent factor, according to what Eric himself told me, was that the cop was so agitated that his shouts were completely unintelligible. After the first drawn gun, I have SERIOUS doubts about the "advancing" bit. Eric's not stupid, and that kind of body language is pretty unmistakable. He also knows that a closer target is easier to hit.

My take is that this is a cop who was completely unprepared for meeting a peaceably and openly armed citizen, and that he was incompetent in the handling of firearms (even given the notorious propensity for the 1911 to AD).

I think it's very interesting that your brother is in a position to perhaps parse the difference between the two stories for himself!
