INDIANAPOLIS - Federal authorities have entere the Indianapolis Baptist Temple and started removing people from inside the church. So far, the seizure of the building has been peaceful. Marshals arrived at the church about 9:30 a.m. Indianapolis time and proceeded to enter.
The authorities and church leaders had an agreement that the seizure would be peaceful, and that seems to be the case. The faithful who had remained in the building were brought out on medical stretchers. Reverend Gregg Dixon Sr. and his son re out of the church and talking to reporters.
As he was being removed, Dixon was heard to say, "The purge has started." Rev. Dixon Sr. says he believes he had an agreement with new U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, and Dixon says the seizure is contrary to what he was told by Ashcroft.
"We had a promise from the Bush administration. We had every reason to believe there was a moratorium. ...They were going to dismiss the case. We had a deal, and they welshed on the deal." The elder Dixon also blames the Republicans for this and says he is extremely disappointed with Ashcroft and Bush, who he calls "Christians."
"They have trampled the First Amendment; they have desecrated a house of God," Dixon said. "They have brought God's judgment down upon them, their souls, their wives, their children, their political careers. I feel sorry for them."
U.S. Marshal Frank Anderson says there were no injuries and the seizure was peaceful. ###
