Murdoch urges broadcasters to fight censorship


James Murdoch, the head of Star TV, advised broadcasters coping with China's authoritarian environment "to push the envelope" in terms of content. He recently made headlines when he advised Hong Kong activists to accept that they are under control of an "absolutist" regime. (05/10/01)

Free speech stifled, say Hong Kong groups


Critics say Chinese authorities stifled free speech and targeted the Falun Gong meditation sect during a large economic conference held in Hong Kong. Officials went so far as to condemn a lawyer for helping an arrested activist give a live radio interview -- police barged in on the interview. (05/10/01)
