I showed up the packed house at the Himmel Park library the other day and heard Hoffman speak. Hoping to hear him shock the Dunbar packed audience with some powerful libertarian talk, I was disappointed.
Many LP campaigns say they are just for education or party membership, however Hoffman claims: "I wat to run the most effective partisan Libertarian race in Pima County history". He also gives the impression that if he got matching funds he could win the race. (LP fundraising letter) The fundraising letter included, a "typo" where he says we should "expand Sun Tran".
At the library I picked up the Hoffman for Tucson pamphlet and expected to find something about eliminating sales tax, legalizing drug use, something. I read it and asked where is the liberty in this? He discusses helping small businesses, transportation, "returning gov't to basics". He throws the word fair share around alot also. It seems like this campaign is just out to cherry coat issues to try to get votes.
Also, since when is garbage service a basic city service? I don't have Tucson garbage service and it works just fine with Waste mgt. a private company. I really don't see much libertarianism in this campaign at all. However Hoffman will be my guest on this week's Dog and Pony show, where we will discuss this stuff and take calls.
