In February Glendale promised to install weapon storage lockers, and cease hauling our guns off to the police station. I checked at the Teague library today -- still no lockers. However, I did notice a sign on the back entrance of the library I hadn't seen before:

Notice

In compliance with state law, the City of Glendale requests that you not carry a firearm into its library facilities. If you are carrying a firearm, we request that you return it to your vehicle or take it home before you return to the library. Staff will not "check it" or in any way hold the firearm for you while you are in the library.

We appreciate your cooperation! If you have any questions, please call Rodeane Widom, Library Director at [623] 930-3562.

Rodeane Widom's e-mail is rwidom@ci.glendale.az.us.

Lt. Matthew Lively is supposedly in charge of arranging for lockers to be installed, although this task doesn't seem to be real high on his list of priorities. His e-mail is MLively@ci.glendale.az.us. Please be polite if you send him a note.

The cop that arrived today to take my pistol had obviously never done a weapon check before. It took him awhile to find the proper form to write a receipt. We walked across the street to his car, and he removed my pistol from my holster. He stared at my 1911, and quizzically uttered, "How..." I suggested that it would be safer for me to clear it if he doesn't know how the gun operates. He let me clear it. Safety over ego -- impressive.

I had some delay in getting it back. The operator reached via the phone in the police station lobby didn't seem to understand what I wanted; she asked me to stay on the line and put me on hold. I hung up after a few minutes. I finally had to describe the weapon checking process to the information clerk in the lobby. I also had to remind them my gun would be found in the communications room, not in Property. It seems the whole PD is rusty on the weapon checking process. I intend to give them some practice. When several of us checked semi-regularly there were officers assigned to "checking detail." Not anymore.
