How sad. Walk into a room full of people whose careers are built on the obscene proposition that they can vote on ANYTHING they want to make law ... and then never deny that assumption! What kind of libertarian argument is that?
Your testimony should have begun with a spelling lesson:
"U - N - C - O - N - S - T - I - T - U - T - I - O - N - A - L"
Then continue with an explanation that what makes law LAW is the consent of the governed, which requires adhering to the rules by which the people allowed government to exist, strictly for the purpose of performing the narrowly limited role of protecting individual liberties. None of the gun laws pass muster, so none are legitimate. Anything ANY legislative body does in violation of the Constitution is null and void.
Next, give them constructive notice under federal law (I forget the exact cite, but I think it's something like USC Title 17) that provides penalties for public officials who violate the rights of citizens under color of law. No more excuses -- they are obligated to verify the accuracy of your claim and then perform in strict accordance with the law; failure to do so makes them PERSONALLY liable for prosecution.
When you accept the premise that they can legitimately pass laws strictly on the basis of how convincing the utilitarian arguments for it are, you abandon libertarianism completely.
