no more gun checks at phoenix library??????
sunday i talked to one of the gaurds at the phoenix library
and asked him how many guns they checked in at alan korwins
gun safety forum which was held saterday on the 4th floor
of the phoenix library.

he said they didnt force people to check guns for the event. he said as long as the library cops could see the gun they didnt make people check it (yea - like library cops got xray vision and can see concealed weapons, liz/kevin can you help me on that).

the guard also said that the library had been talking with the attorney general on the issue gun checking and decided not to do it.

the gaurd even even told me that if we held a libertarian meeting in the front room the they would let people in with their guns.

while i dont like having libertarian meetings in government buildings if this gaurds statements are true it gets over the hornings objections that people are disarmed by the government in the library. and it would help other library patrons feel safe when the libertarian meetings occured each month and a large number of freedom loving ARMED libertarians were in the library.

We had, probably, just shy of 300 people at the forum.

There were spirited debates on the cop forum (thanks to the interplay of spunky defense attorney, Marc Victor of Tempe and moderator Mike Anthony), as well as the doctor forum thanks to Drs. Tim Wheeler, Sarah Thompson, and a surprise, to me, one Dr. Jane (?) Orient, a feisty doc from Arizona, me thinks. Colonel Jff Cooper came up after the invocation and gave us a short dissertation on what he thinks gun safety is and most definately what he thinks it IS NOT. He also spoke about the difference between "freedom" and "liberty." He prefers the latter.

The Philosophy Panel was made to order to this group of mostly red-meat conservatives and libertarians. When you get Alan Korwin, Alan Gottlieb, writer Boston T. Party, and Marc Victor on such a panel, watch out. It was at this point that Mesa Vice Mayor Jim Davidson walked over to my aisle seat, knelt down, and thanked me for the fine forum. He said he enjoyed the first two panels, but this current one, the philosophy panel "was, was....um"

"Too strident?" I interjected?

"Yes, that's it. I can't say I agree with the politics so I guess it's time to go."

Fair enough. At least he had the juevos to show up.

Reps Karen Johnson, Farnsworth, and Pierce(?) were there as well.

Despite promises from four TV crews and a couple of newspapers to attend; despite the fact that all of them covered the Gay Pride march which was just 50 yards away, only Public Access Channel 11 and Capitol Times showed up. Channel 11 was there because one of our allies at the Phx City Council leaned on them. The Capitol Times, normally a conservative newspaper, according to Alan Korwin, sent a guy who all but promised Alan Korwin a hit piece, suggesting that the title of his Gun Safety Forum be something like, "Bait and Switch." I guess the reporter did not like the fact that in our lexicon, the concept of gun safety includes the safe operation of firearms as well as the knowledge to keep them safe from those who would confiscate them.

Speaking of confiscation, the anti-gunners did not show. It appears that there strategy was to keep us as low profile as possible. Their presence at a protest would assure press coverage. Our message getting out is something they could not afford. Too bad for their lack of courage. Just in case they happend by, I was prepared with five signs and the portable 50 watt PA.

After the forum, a group which mostly contained the Forum organizers, went across the street to The Spagetti Factory to engage in a little well-deserved happy hour celebration.

BTW, all of the huff about checking firearms in the library....they created a room which would hold about 100 firearms. They only checked about eight or so. None of the cops, off-duty or on duty, checked their firearms. I can't say for the rest. ;)
