Herring, 73, ended up in the clink the real one Monday after trying to deliver a birthday telegram at the Hennepin County Government Center in his cowboy duds. A sherriff's deputy spotted the fake gun and grabbed him.
"They thought I was deranged, and that I was coming in to kill a judge," Herring said. "I kept saying the gun was a dummy. And they kept asking questions about my mental health; if I'd ever been in an insane asylum; if I was on medication or if I had thoughts about suicide."
Hennepin County Sheriff's Capt. Richard Loose said Wednesday that Herring was held for several hours because he was uncooperative and wouldn't explain what he was up to dressed like a cowboy in the courthouse.
Meanwhile, as Herring sat in jail, an employee at the county's Disabilities Services Department waited in her office for the singing cowboy she had hired as a birthday treat for a co-worker and country music fan.
