Ohhhh, careful man. This preemptive mind reading thing is what makes Republicans part of the problem (and anyone else that thinks they're The Shadow, and know what evil lurks in the hearts of man.
Mutual Assured Distruction is about the best you can do and still deserve to be left in peace. If the Soviet Union had as a goal to detroy us, then it was proper for us to make sure that they understood that that was a very bad idea. But to attack them out of fear of what might happen would strip us of any right to expect peace from anyone. And this also applies to "Juan Valdez" traveling hundreds or thousands of miles to a strange land for the the slightest hope of providing himself and his family a better life. Any fear that I would have of him or even his evl brother "Jose" should only be met with preparation for what I might fear may happen,... not a preemptive strike when no rights violation has occured.
"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed -- and thus clamorous to be led to safety -- by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." -- H.L. Mencken
