March 9 (Bloomberg) -- Swiss Propose Legalizing Production, Sale and Consumption of MarijuanaBern: The Swiss government proposed the legalization of the production, sale and consumption of cannabis, as many Swiss already smoke marijuana without apparent harm, it said. Some 7 percent of all Swiss between the ages of 15 and 39 consume cannabis regularly, a government study showed. Last year, hemp farmers produced 200 tons worth more than 600 million Swiss francs ($364 million) in the nation of 7.2 million people. In the 1990s, Swiss authorities embraced a more liberal drug policy than most other countries to reduce abuse. It has since handed out heroin to long-term addicts while offering treatment, which is unique in Europe. The police also increasingly turned a blind eye to marijuana, which today is sold in some shops. ``The government's stance shows clear progress,'' said Peter Zysset, 35, a father of three and a sales assistant at a hemp shop in the Swiss capital. ``I've been smoking between two and three joints a day for about 20 years.''
