True enough...although I doubt many people on this list care much if the LPUS chooses to affiliate with a shell organization that isn't a political party. It's not so much that ALP, Inc. CANNOT do th things for which national has affiliated them. They COULD ask for a new 3-letter designation, start registering voters for it, petition as a new party, and start running candidates. It's just that up till now they HAVEN'T done those things, which would make them a political party. They've been content to exist as a shell organization, who's sole purpose is to take over the resources of an _existing_ political party -- ALP.
ALP, Inc. not being a political party puts Peter in a difficult position, assuming the court rules against him on the question of merger. ALP, Inc. must take positive steps to BECOME a political party by asking for a new 3-letter designation and getting people to register for it, petitioning to get on the ballot, etc. Or else face increasingly tough questions from people like me regarding what exactly the organization is doing. He'll have a very hard road ahead trying to get people to switch voter registrations. Despite the fact that several people here are enamored with the idea that ALP, Inc. is a political party, them not being one is a sword that cuts them far more than it could ever hurt ALP.
Hopefully this will help to achieve the goal I failed to achieve with a vote at the ALP, Inc. meeting in January: if the court rules against ALP, Inc. on the question of merger then the litigation emanating from that organization stops.
