Re: Mall weapons policy
Dear Sir or Madam:
This afternoon I entered Scottsdale Fashion Square via a first level entrance on the northwest side of the property. I was armed with a .45 ACP pistol carried securely in a visible belt holster in compliance with the law. There were no signs at the entrance I used indicating that the carrying of weapons in the mall was forbidden. As I examined the directory kiosk, two officers of the Scottsdale Police approached me. One asked me to leave my weapon in my vehicle while I shoped. He said I was on private property and that weapons were not allowed there.
I asked the officer if this property was posted. He said that it was not well posted, only in a couple places, so that I was not in violation of the law, but he said that if I remained the management would probably ask them to talk to me. Not wanting to make trouble, I agreed to leave.
I am writing to ask for clarification on the policy of Scottsdale Fashion Square towards the carrying of weapons by patrons. Is it permitted or not?
If it is permitted, I would ask that you inform the Scottsdale Police of that so that tey do not harass your patrons. If it is not permitted, I would ask that you clearly post the prohibition on each entrance so that the time of the police and the customers is not wasted.
If you do not permit the carrying of weapons by patrons, I regret to inform you that you shall have no more business from me. While it is within your private property rights to require me to waive my right to defend myself in exchange for the privilege of doing business with you, I find it very insulting that you would require that of me.
Sincerely,
Kevin Walsh
