SUBJECT: Write a letter-to-the-editor about medical marijuana

A bill will soon be introduced in the Nevada state legislature to remove criminal penalties for the medical use of marijuana.

At the same time, however, medical marijuana has not been broadly embraced by Nevada state legislators, despite the fact that voters overwhelmingly approved a medical marijuana initiative last November with 65 percent of the vote.

If medical marijuana patients are going to achieve protection from arrest and prosecution this year, additional pressure must be brought to bear on the legislators who will decide this issue's fate.

To increase awareness about medical marijuana and the need to protect patients, MPP has written several letters-to-the-editor that you can submit to state and local newspapers. The letters call for the legislature to take action on medical marijuana in accordance with the will of the voters. Feel free to submit the letters as written, or you can amend them to reflect your own voice.

You can obtain a copy of the letters at MPP's Nevada Web site: http://www.mpp.org/NV

If published, these letters will keep medical marijuana fresh in the minds of citizens, and help it receive the attention it deserves from the legislature.

Lastly, if you have not yet encouraged your legislators via e-mail to support the medical marijuana bill, please do so as soon as possible. If you have already contacted your legislators, thank you -- and be sure to tell your friends and family in Nevada to do the same.

HOW TO SUPPORT THE MARIJUANA POLICY PROJECT

MPP's state legislative monitoring service is funded entirely by the contributions of MPP allies and members nationwide. In order to launch this service in January 2001, MPP had to raise more than $127,000 from hundreds of donors in 2000.

In order to continue with this service in 2002, MPP needs to raise another $127,000 during this calendar year. If you find MPP's legislative monitoring service helpful, please consider making a donation at: http://www.mpp.org/MoneyForStates

Because MPP devotes 100% of its efforts toward influencing public policy, contributions are not tax-deductible. However, the above link also provides a way to make a tax-deductible donation.
